More likely the crypts are blocked on purpose, not collapsed, for a reason. What that reason is I haven't a clue. But everything Bran the Builder made stands at this point in the story. Why would the crypts be any different?

Here's what I think. the only other castle in the seven kingdoms that have gargoyles like the original bit of Winterfell is Dragonstone. Gargoyles are a mark of Valyrian architecture. I know the history buffs will tell me that the first keep was constructed over 5,000 years ago and therefore was built before the founding of the Valyrian freehold. This is true but those who pay extra attention to detail will know that this doesn't mean shit. The Hightowers and the Daynes are of first men ancestry yet have Valyrian features. Jorah tells Dany that his Hightower wife resembled her for one, for two, we see the some Daynes having extremely attractive looks and some have silver hair (Darkstar) and purple eyes (Ashara). Their sword Dawn was forged from the metal of a meteorite instead of steel made from iron but it has Valyrian steel features which means it was forged with the spells of the fire and blood magic known to Valyrians and was forged like steel and the first men didn't know how to make steel because that knowledge was brought to Westeros by the Andals. Sam mentions Dragonsteel being wielded against the Others which for the reasons I mentioned above, I believe is what they called Valyrian steel before there was an actual Valyria. The people who went on to find Valyria were once in Westeros. They made Winterfell and the Starks descended from them like the Daynes and the Hightowers. They made the first keep and marked it with gargoyles. They wielded the Dragonsteel against the Others in the North. It is said that the great sword Ice got its name from an earlier family sword. I believe that the original Ice was made of this Dragonsteel Sam mentions and that it rests in the crypts of Winterfell. My last piece of evidence that links these pre-Valyrians (for lack of a better name) is that we know that the Valyrians like to build around volcanoes like we see with the fourteen flames of Valyria and the volcano on Dragonstone. Think about the fact that Winterfell is built on a hotspring. There are hot pools of water all over Winterfell and they even managed to pipe it through the castle itself for warmth. The reasons there are hotsprings under Winterfell is because it was built on top of an UNDERGROUND VOLCANO! Yellowstone National Park has hot springs all over it because it has a massive underground volcano under it that erupts once every couple of thousand of years. I'm not saying that it will erupt under Winterfell, just pointing out details. Volcanos are obviously an optimal place for fire magic and therefore a great place to build a fortress to fight the Others from and the Valyrians were attracted to them. There could very well be access to obsidian in the deepest parts of the crypts if they've dug deep enough and even the Long Night won't freeze those who take refuge there. I also believe that the Night's King's bride is the Great Other and was defeated there and even possibly imprisoned there. She was based of the leanan sidhe from Celtic mythology the way the children and the Others were inspired by the regular Sidhe. It explains her ability to take the Nights King's soul. And if she took his soul than she was ruling through him because he would have been no more than a thrall to her. She targets and enslaves men which is why all the Others are male. And she makes for a perfect description for the Great Other. The leanan sidhe enslaves and feeds off those who are seduced by her, but it cuts both ways. If a man is able to resist her temptations than she is bound to his will and must do as he bids. I think something happened to reawaken her and this is the reason behind the return of the Others. Or the pact was broken which allowed her to return to her ways. Or maybe she was biding her time waiting for the return of the long night and when she saw the signs of its return she started building power again. I won't presume to be able to guess everything when there are so many possibilities. I will say that he was called the "Night's King" because she is the Night and he is her King.

Maaike R there is a problem with the three heads of the Dragon thing. Rhaegar mentioned it once to his wife in one on Dany's dreams. The undying mention 3 to her several times but never bring it up, although when they call her child of three it could mean she is one of three. I think the biggest thing about the three heads of the Dragon theory is that people enjoy trying to guess who the other two dragon riders are. Most people think it's Jon and Tyrion. I really like the show a lot too but I won't try to theorize it because they have changed so much it makes it hard. I think the white-haired woman in Brans vision was shown so Bran and us could see a more sinister side of the old gods and the way they were worshipped. I still can't say about the pregnant woman. I do believe that knowing GRRM, the NQ most likely was a normal person at some point and that neither the Great Other or Rhhlor are physically walking around somewhere in this series.

Well I think they build winterfell on a simular cave/tree spot as bloodravens cave....with a simular function. But did they do it to protect something or to keep it contained and prevent others from reaching it...are they guarding it and will winter come for it? The children brought their dead to bloodravens cave to feed the tree and had a spell to keep the others out. While winterfell has spells to keep the dead inside (does that also mean keeping others out and did the spell on bloodravens cave keep their dead in too or is it specifically on the crypts? Why?). And the starks feed their dead to the tree (all around the castle) as well. Maybe the deeper you go inside the crypts the nearer to the roots of the tree that would explain why the oldest dead are buried the deepest... they are nearest to the tree and that was the purpose of the crypts...the other dead are just build above it. Winterfell would be expending towards the sky not into the ground...cause its about what is inside the caves not about the building on top of the tree. Bran had a vision of a white haired woman doing human sacrifice to the tree at winterfell...she was feeding the tree like ned fed the tree when he cleaned his sword beneath the tree. I think the family customs are bloodmagic like the children/WW practice cause they are related they just don't know it anymore but the WW sure do thats why they don't kill but turn the starks. It explains the starks abilities as well. I think in order to know if WW are evil we need to know the origins of the Starks and how they connect to the children. The children did bloodmagic does that make them evil? Or are they just nature. Its interesting that bran got trained by bloodraven to enhance his greensight/warging, arya got trained by the faceless men (also bloodmagic) to skinchange. There is something about the starks. I think the dragon has 3 heads means 3 different types of magic rooted in the same history..probably all 3 coming from the children. With every dragon having 1 person be its head....like all the red priestesses believing in the red God supporting Dany. Faceless men...many faced god and all the faces on the trees....its human sacrifice to the tree....could there be a tree in the house of black and white cause they also store the dead there...are they feeding a tree? I don't think this will end in war and destruction.. it will end in balance and peace.

GrayArea I watched other vids and saw a pattern. Like Arya and bran both eat something before getting trained in their abilities. The house of black and white felt like wintefell...no shit girl...its the fucking crypts. They targeted Arya because she is a Stark. Thats why they didn't mind she went back home...she was always meant to do that, its what they wanted..to help the Stark be what she was meant to be...just like they did with bran. I wonder if Ned knew....knew the secret of the starks...knew about the prophecy rhaegar/lyanna knew about jon and knew about Arya's future. If her dance instructor was a faceless man...could ned have known? Arya would need protection and training. He send Jon to the wall where he would be more safe. Could Ned have been part of it or be alive if a faceless man died in his place? I think there is more going on than we know. And I think all the religions are the same and rooted together...the trees of the children...nature. So fighting amongst yourself cause ya call it something else is fucking stupid. I think feeding the tree is meant as...going back to the roots...going back to the Gods. So killing someone infront of the tree is honourable in a way.....but the Targaryens burn their dead. I think BOTH the Targaryens and the WW started as an act of anger towards the first men. And the Starks might be the grandkids that don't fucking remember what they say they remember. No shit Jon knows nothing.

At this point I'm pretty sure this whole thing isn't about 3 dragonriders or a war. Its the SONG of ice and fire. And the children call themselves singers. Apparently a long time ago they sang a song about ice and fire...WW and Dragons. And its ice AND fire not ice against fire. It was based on the poem about the world ending in ice or fire. Could ice and fire both be a creation by the children...two responses out of anger/fear? But it got a bit out of hand... wooops.

I think a Great Other is down there, the cold drafts coming up from below where it should be hot because there are hotsprings. Also good job pointing out that the only parts of Winterfell left that Bran built is the crypts and the..well I think the broken tower but you say the first keep. (not sure which if either are right) I also think the iron swords are to keep the Other from taking the dead kings as his army, and the ironwood door to the crypts is the last line of defense in case of an escape. This Other is important enough to be held hostage against an entire army of Others, long enough to even build a wall.

It is an interesting idea. Good question, why the WW came back. 1. Either Jon's birth could be awaken them - but I don't like this idea, although it makes some sense. But if I am right, and Rhaegar and Lyanna was not pure love, but duty too, warnings of the Old Gods (Bloodraven/Bran on the Isle of Faces) to create a hybrid to save future Westeros from the doom, then if Jon would not have been born, then no problem at all... So it would be a paradox... 2. I like your idea better: that Rickard shared the Stark secret with Brandon, but Brandon and Rickard both died, and the huge Stark secret was forgotten, some taboo broken by Ned unwillingly (Ned was raised at the Vale, had not so close bond with Winterfell and it's secrets), which awoke the WWs. Or during the Tourney of Harrenhall, or the Rebellion the rule of "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell" was already broken, when Ned marched South to war. 3. Or: just the rings of the sun turned into such a state (in the intro and in the Citadel on the ceiling), where they close Planetos from the sun for a long while. I don't know, but it is a very interesting question, what awoke the WWs.

Fell is a high barren landscape. It's an English word derived from Old Norse. Fells refer to uncultivated high grounds moor-covered hills and grazing lands. Based on the description of the land surrounding Winterfell I say this is what the word fell means in the name. Since people gather around Winterfell in the Winter you can say that Winterfell is Winters high ground. People go to the high ground when a storm with potential flooding comes. It is the same for the people around Winterfell, they come to escape the flood of snow.

Winterfell, winter has a rarely used meaning Years... As in using it to mark the passing of time, "He is Sixty Winters old." Fell also has many old meanings, some of the odder ones, 1) Finish by sewing an edge down flat. 2) fierce; cruel; dreadful; savage. destructive; deadly. 3) an Middle English form meaning wicked person (ie Felon). 4) Skin or animal hide. 5) an upland pasture, moor, or thicket; a highland plateau. GRRM likes to use words, and naming is important to him, as you know. So going with your theory, its not where Winter was defeated, but where Winter's Fell is, where they buried Winter, the Crypts... and using fell if the area is hill the meaning can be hidden under the term Winterfell, or Winter's Pastures.

In aTV show called Supernatural , humans faced the World’s End. A well-known monster killer , Dean , lost his honor while trapped in hell. That broke the world’s first Holy Seal. All other holy seals that protected the realms of men fell like dominoes. Dean was expected to sacrifice his life to prevent the End of the World. If Ned started the Long Night by breaking some forgotten oath, someone of Stark Blood must end it. Of course Supernatural, famous for breaking the mold , stopped the Great War without killing Dean. I’d like Ned to comeback and clean up his own mess.

If you believe the ice dragon theory, then Winter was a dragon that fell at Winterfell, and might come back. Or, Winter's eggs are in the crypts and that's what was being guarded down there all those centuries - not simply the bones of the Starks, but a dragon's egg.

Based around what was said about Ned burying his brothers and sisters in the crypts and breaking some sort of rule, that could be one of the reasons that there must always be a Stark at Winterfall because Bean the builder new that a future Stark would bury some one down there that doesn't belong

I do think it highly likely something is down there and has either been jailed there or protected in some way. I tend towards jailed because of that wonderful passage in the first book. "By ancient custom an iron longsword had been laid across the lap of each who had been Lord of Winterfell, to keep the vengeful spirits in their crypts. The oldest had long ago rusted away to nothing, leaving only a few red stains where the metal had rested on stone. Ned wondered if that meant those ghosts were free to roam the castle now. He hoped not." What if the lack of that protection of an iron sword has allowed enough of a hole for whatever is down there to whisper to the Night King. It does make you wonder though.

I'm thinking Winter is an Ice Dragon...maybe that's why Ned's sword is called "ICE"...because it killed the ice dragon and their castle is where that dragon fell. Perhaps there are more, maybe even in the wall. There could be three dragons: Winter, Ice, and Snow...Ice is named for the dragon it killed...maybe snow was killed long ago, and now the lady of them, Winter, is coming next.

Little Finger is no one. I think he can change faces and at the end of this episode, he was pretending to be Arya. Sansa got a letter earlier to go to see Cersei. He knew she wouldn't go and that she would send Brienne, who is supposed to protect the Stark sisters. They even made it a point to show that scene with Sansa and Little Finger. He's trying to divide Arya and Sansa. The first time Arya and Sansa spoke this episode, Arya showed emotion. She showed uncertainty when speaking about their father. The final time they speak, Arya spoke much differently. She spoke calm and with no emotion. She also flipped that blade and handed it to Sansa like someone who has handled that blade for years. Little Finger owned that blade for years. Arya just got to Winterfell and we've never seen her handle a blade like that. Just Needle and a bow.

Not true the older the king, the deeper he is in the crypts. Walking with Robert, Ned tells him, “She is down at the END, with Father and Brandon.” (GoT pg. 42.) “Ned stopped at last and lifted the oil lantern. The crypt continued on into darkness ahead of them, but beyond this point the tombs were empty and unsealed; black holes waiting for their dead, waiting for him and his children.” (GoT pg. 43.) So it started with the oldest & the deeper into it (deeper meaning further down the “long procession of granite pillars that marched ahead two by two, into the dark. Between the pillars, the dead sat on their stone thrones against walls...”) the more recent the death.

My only thought against this is the overly strange coincidence of the timing of the Red God’s followers entering Westeros at the same time. Seems like it would only be one of those two to cause the Night King to return. And my money is on the fire vs ice theme.

I have to two theories of what is down there in the Crypts. A.) A Identity, Creature that needs to be contained and is sealed away with ancient magic. B.) The Kings of Winter are resting down there, waiting for the Time the long Night returns. Waiting till the time has come to rise. To defend their own Blood, the Starks, against the prime Enemy of all life. Maybe that´s the Reason why 🐺 The North remembers 🐺 that 🐺 Winter is coming 🐺

Tv show shows less the importance of Winterfell than the books... in the books crypts of Winterfell are most mysterious place in which only few people can enter.... (for example the conquerers didnt went down there, or couldnt)... also no one knows whats on the lower levels, and also i think Rickon (in the books) talked about seeing Ned down there (after his execution)... Winterfell is definitely everything but an ordinary castle... too bad we dont have much infos, only some clues here and there... Btw i liked your video, it made me remember some stuff from books which i find interesting :)

I think Storm’s end is like u said: where storms end. The Wall is a wall. High Tower is a high tower. But I think Winterfell is where winter fell 8,000 years ago. As in The Others came & were defeated & so winter fell on the field of battle. But I think the King of the North knew The Others would return 1 day & so The Stark words are a warning: Winter is coming. But when it comes, Winter will fall. About Ned’s siblings... his brother was momentarily Lord of Winterfell since I think he died moments after his father. And his sister was a Princess. And if the theories about Rhaegar being alive are true then Lyanna would technically have been a Queen.

I like the idea that Winter is a name...that makes so much sense. GRRM doesn't input anything into a story for no reason, so the whole night king/ night queen has to have SOME place in this story. A few people are suggesting Winter is the Night Queen and I dig that. But "Winter is coming" sounds like that makes it the Night Kings name. But assuming the Night Queen is buried in Winterfell and the Night king is Winter that is coming for her (maybe hoping to resurrect her like Jon) why would the Starks want to keep her body in the crypts? Was she a Stark? Did she have a brother like Ned who wanted to put her body there? If so, maybe when Winter first came they were coming for her, but now that Lyanna is there Winter is coming for her. Except maybe Winter is different this time...maybe he's Lyanna's man (Rhaegar). I know it sounds crazy but the walkers look Targaryan. Nevermind. Doesn't really make sense.
