Winter Wild Camping Kit Sub 6.5KG | Wet & Windy Dartmoor Weather | Hilleberg Akto

Outdoors Inspiration, Shamus McCaffery, sets out for a wild camp on King's Tor, Dartmoor, in heavy wind and rain. With his canine companion, Petra the German Shepherd, he describes his 6.5 KG winter wild camping gear. He pitches a Hilleberg Akto and then sets out to explore and tell the history of Foggintor Quarry. Shamus shares his skills and knowledge on Dartmoor National Park, where he continues to live and work.

I’m very jealous that you live on the moor! I’m visiting in 2 weeks and looking forward to it, I haven’t been since last summer. I completely agree that Foggintor quarry is getting too busy. I did a loop of the North Moor last time and walked past the quarry on my way from Princetown to Merrivale and there was a huge family tent in the quarry. That’s not wild camping. I prefer to camp in the middle of nowhere where I’m completely alone. The problem is that many people want to camp close to their cars. Thanks for making the video

Oh I love your videos! So refreshing to see someone on KZread not full of themselves but just so humble, interesting and great to learn from! I love the way you laugh whenever the foul weather comes over!!! At the beginning of this video you walk thru a deep stream: surely the water is higher than your walking boots? Don't your feet get wet and doesn't that make them cold and uncomfortable for the rest of your trip? I've only ever wild camped in the summer. I'd like to know how on earth you pass the long hours of darkness, as that puts me off more than the weather.

Hello Peter, thank you 😊 The long night hours of a winter camp can be a real drag. But when I’m making a video, there isn’t enough time. The water from the steam certainly filled my boots, if it was avoidable I would have done, but that was the fording point. I’m never really too bothered by wet feet, unless it’s freezing temperatures, then I would avoid it. Thank you for watching 😊👍🐶

Hi Shamus, you must have a decent pair of gaiters to get through that depth of water but amazing that you go out for a camp in truly difficult conditions. Your camera shots and angles really immerse the viewer in your trip which is great for me as I am unable to get out camping at the moment. Organising and managing yourself and Petra in a small tent in such conditions is some feat, never mind filming as well. I am going to try that custard apple crunch. Great advice re condensation and drying out some clothing. You even managed a time-lapse in there too and took us on a trip to the stunning looking Foggintor Quarry. The only thing that I can think of to make the video better would have been you falling into the water instead of Petra! THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND PUTTING SUCH EFFORT INTO THIS..

Only just discovered your channel - and loved this video. I'm primarily a photographer than a hiker - but I hike and camp for that purpose, with my dog Barney the Border Collie too. My main focus when out is to get the shots I want but stay as dry and warm as possible - keeping away from bogs and streams etc. I was amazed to see you plodging (geordie term) knee-deep in the stream and then getting warm and dry in camp! What were you wearing for socks and trousers to be able to get things dry overnight? Wasnt the next days hike pretty unpleasant with soaked boots and bottoms? I'd love to upgrade my kit to be able to do that (or are you just hard as nails!!! ;-) ) I'll be checking out your other videos for sure. Thanks for sharing your expertise and experiences.

Wye aye 😉 - thanks for commenting... I don't know about the 'hard as nails' bit 😂 I try to avoid getting wet. That little river was swollen and I knew I would probably end up wet anyway. My boots and socks were wet in the morning, within 5 minutes I forget about it and don't notice - I would be a little more careful about it if it was colder though. I wear Montane Terra Pants, and generally find that they will dry quickly with body heat. so I don't hesitate to get them on in the morning, because I know it will start the drying process - provided it isn't still raining. Thanks for commenting 😊👍🐶

Great video. Very interesting to learn about Hay Tor Quarries and what some of the granite from Fogging Tor Quarry has been used for. I saw those boots a few weeks ago. At that time there was note next to them. They’re a memorial for someone who has passed into the next life, a fellow fan of the moor. Not a bad place for the spirit to wander. I’m lucky enough to have an Akto and a Soulo. I have to say I prefer the Akto in many ways. There are lighter tents about but all things considered it’s probably the best all round one person. Someone once wrote about the triangle of gear qualities - durability, low weight, and cost. Impossible to have all 3. Akto is pricey but worth it. Looking forward to your next video. Where did you learn all about the weather? Can you recommend a book? Cheers

  • @outdoorsinspiration9284

    @outdoorsinspiration9284

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi there, I use that triangle to explain the relationship between cost, durability and weight as well. I think it’s a general analogy that’s used across many sectors, originally “fast, cheap, good; pick two” 😊 as you can see from my videos, I also have a Soulo (and an Anjan) - for me the Akto is light enough and packs down nice and small as well👍 The Anjan is a beautiful tent that is relatively light too, and the Soulo is a fortress. I was fortunate enough to work for the British Antarctic Survey in the 90s, I lived in Antarctica for several years - that’s where I first learned meteorological observation. A few years later I actually did a met office observers course, it was about a week long back then... anyway meteorology wasn’t my job, just something that had to be done as a part of it. There are many books on ‘understanding weather’ but the HMSO Cloud Book is really good reference guide to cloud types 👍

With the lack of gear placement opportunities higher up the climb and increasing rope drag in and out of the crack (lack of experience led to me not extending the gear placement) I was lucky not to take a fall high off the climb on to the ground. I camped on king torr last time I was out. we were reading some story's about adders and that has now put the fear of god in her so she is reluctant to return. I think it's gonna cost me a pair of gators for her before she will want to come back.

Hi Lee, I’m not keen on adders, but I don’t see many, perhaps 1 every year. They generally keep clear. 😊 Thanks for watching 👍

If it's no trouble, can you video how you cram all that gear in your Talon 33, please? I have the Talon 33. I'm amazed at how you did that. 👍

Yes, I can probably do that at some point. I wouldn't normally use the Talon 33 - I was surprised that so much went in myself 😊 The Akto has internal rods so that is inside to one side, the sleeping bag compacts well and goes next to the tent with sleeping mat then pressed in between / forward of them. The rest is stacked on top. Waterproof trousers in the outside mesh (until I put them on). I had space for 2L of water and my video / technical kit too 👍

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Ah, so I'm guessing vertical packing then. My sleeping bag is the Rab Neutrino Endurance 400 and no matter what I try, compresses to about 13 litres. It's bulky. Anyway, impressive! Cheers. 👍

@@akivanomad2167 - Yes vertical 👍 This bag was a older style Rab Alpine 600 (they don't make it anymore) it has 800 fill power and probably squishes down to about 8 / 9 litres - If I had taken my Cumulus bag (which fits a 13 litre dry bag) I would have struggled - but then it's rated to -15 which would have ben overkill. 😊

Hi Ian, fantastic to hear from you 😊 TFS loved camping, bless him. Although he was always covered in muck! I thought of you the other day as I pitched a tent in the same spot where you, Dave and I did all those years ago when it snowed at Easter. I hope you're well👍🐶

Hi Shamus, Just wondering which Rab down bag you used? I need to upgrade my old ME Helium this winter as it is getting a bit battered but as well as the usual weight/warmth considerations that you think of I am struggling to get an idea of pack size for a lot of the current products that look interesting online. I'm assuming that with your base weight getting nice and low, using a 33L bag and the weather being not great that whatever bag you are using is a good combo of low weight, small pack size and decent comfort rating? Thanks in advance, Pete

Hi Pete, this particular bag isn't available anymore It is the original (not the current) Rab Alpine 600 which had 800 fill power down. It squishes into an 8 litre dry bag and has a comfort rating of -7. I am a cold sleeper, so I have another bag as well (rated to -15) which is a Cumulus Teneqa 850 - this compresses to around 12 litres, that would have been pushing things for this set up though.

do you use a 360 degree cam for the wide angle shots of yourself as your walking, if so are they easy to use and worth the money? TIA

Hi Jim, thanks for asking 😊 It is a 360 camera, yes 👍 Worth the money, I'm not sure about that - Ideally I would prefer to fly a drone to add to the images, but they are illegal to use on access land within Dartmoor National Park, so I can't. That's why I use the 360 camera. They are simple enough to use and it gets used as my second 'PetraCam' camera as well.
