Just drove from SC 80* weather, thru here yesterday to beat the storm to head up north. If you dont have to drive, Dont. Not worth getting stuck, or worse. Thank you to first responders, tow trucks, plow/sanding crews, and electric n tree people. Be Safe everyone. Put emergency kits in your cars - salt/sand shovel, winter clothes/hats/gloves, extra food n water, blanket or sleeping bag etc.... Good to have and not need, rather than need and not have.

I stayed home but there’s a power outage in Stafford since 4 pm of yesterday. We are the only house in the neighborhood with a generator. However no internet or cellular data. Couldn’t tell my job that I can’t make it to work, even though I work from home. Our neighbor who got stuck on the road in our neighborhood was the one who informed us that I-95 was shutdown. We decided to drive up to Damascus, Maryland to stay with family & took a detour. Took us over 3 hours. Half-way through we were finally had access to full cellular data & were able to call loved ones. Made it safely to MD & sheltering in with family.

It was like the storm of 78 when VDOT didn't treat the roads or do anything for the people trying to get home. People left their cars and walked to shelter. VDOT was asked to shut 95N down and open it up for traffic leaving DC, they wouldn't.

It's not white-out conditions if you can't see while driving 35 miles an hour. When you are sitting still and can't see 25 feet ahead of you, then we can start thinking about calling it white-out conditions.

Wish I could do more than send good wishes. I’m glad you’re safe. When big back to back blizzards hit the Boston area in the winter of 1977-8, many drivers were snowbound on highways in their cars until rescued, very dangerous. And in this part of the country we are used to big snowstorms and have well-organized snow removal, especially from major highways. As you found, storms can surprise you. One thing people need to be reminded of: if you are in a running car that is standing in deep snow, DON’T LET SNOW BLOCK THE EXHAUST.

I live in Stafford. That snowstorm was the worst I’ve ever experienced. Power in my particular area was out for 36 hours. The day of the snow storm, it had been coming down since I believe 4 in the morning and didn’t stop until around three in the afternoon. I relied on propane (some of it stolen from an out of town neighbor. I bought him a new cylinder) and a little furnace trick to keep warm. Even after shoveling my truck out, I couldn’t go anywhere despite having four wheel drive and chains. The radio is all I had to stay informed of what was going on since there was no phone service either. To make matters worse, the temps plummeted after the storm ended making everything freeze and turn into ice. I95 was also a disaster along with route 1 and much of 610. I ended up walking to work in knee high snow to buy an inverter and a battery to try and keep warm. Worst snow storm I ever experienced.

By that time many were either going to bed or watching the football game or were in the middle of traveling home from New Years. Additionally, many government contractors that don't work in government facilities still had to go to work. Then there are workers in the service sector who definitely don't get telework still had to go in. Just bad timing on many levels.

Because people had to work and relied on VDOT to have the roads cleared. Apparently people don't understand that some people have to work outside their home. Most in the greater Washington are not used to heavy snow or they are from elsewhere and have never driven in snow. There are alot of military bases scattered through the area and some of the personnel are from the South where they usually don't have snow.

@@marilynnickelson7024 I understand people having to work, but when it starts snowing, it's time for the employer to keep an eye on the weather and let people leave early enough to get home safely.

Probably that slushy greasy snow that’s so slippery. I grew up driving in all types of weather in Duluth. These poor people probably don’t know how to drive in snow. They should stay off the roads. Nothing is worth it, in less you’re essential personnel.
