We got to experience the extreme Winter White Spiti in Feb 2023 in our own 4x4 Vehicles and that too under the guidance of Dinesh bhai. Few of the taglines of our Expedition were "Let's take our 4x4s where they belong" and "Test your Metal".
We officially started and ended the Adventure at Barog, Himachal Pradesh. People from various parts of India joined the Expedition like Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu, Delhi. Our Travel duration was of 8 days starting from 6th Feb 2023 to 13th Feb 2023.
The Participants were told to be prepared for a challenging adventure rather than a safe and happy travel. So, we were equipped with various tools like Axe, Hammer, Shovel, Snowchains, Towing Ropes and Hooks etc.
We got to learn a lot about our respective Vehicles as well as about the Terrain we were driving on.
** Itinerary for Reference **
* Day 1 (6th Feb 2023): Delhi to Barog
- Reach Barog, Himachal Pradesh (on our own)
- Introduction with all the Participants
- Pre-requisites and other Checklist things
* Day 2 (7th Feb 2023): Barog to Kalpa / Reckong Peo
- Reach Kalpa / Reckong Peo via Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur route
- Getting used to with Lower Temperatures, Snow, Black Ice, Survival without Water Pipelines
* Day 3 (8th Feb 2023): Kalpa to Kaza
- Reach Kaza before Dark via Nako, Tabo, Khab
- Getting used to with extreme Weather (-5°C to -10°C in Day and -20°C to -25°C at Night)
* Day 4 (9th Feb 2023): Kaza to Hikkim / Komic / Langza
- Adventure in Kaza by doing Snow Drives to Hikkim (Highest Post Office) and Komic
- learning about best practices for Cold Start of Diesel Vehicles and taking precautions to prevent issues
- experienced the very 1st Snowfall of my Life
* Day 5 (10th Feb 2023): Kaza to Kaza
- Scorpio N struggling to start in 1st crank
- putting Snowchains on Vehicles
- Extreme Snow Adventure and fun with 4x4 vehicles
- Testing the limits of our Vehicles in Snow
- Winching and Towing the stuck Vehicles, Rescuing them.
- Tiring but Fun day!
* Day 6 (11th Feb 2023): Kaza to Key Monastery and Chicham
- 1.5 KM Snow Trek to Key Monastery
- Exploring the Risky yet Adventurous route upto Chicham Bridge
- Enjoying homemade Momos in Kaza
* Day 7 (12th Feb 2023): Kaza to Barog
- enjoying a Beautiful Morning after 2 days of continuous Snowfall
- leaving early for Barog as its a very long Drive
- People were now experienced enough to drive independently so we spent some personal time also clicking Pictures
- experiencing fast driving in hills at night
- Celebrating the Adventure at Barog
* Day 8 (13th Feb 2023): Barog to Delhi
- feeling sad that the Adventure came to an end
- simple Highway Drive back to Delhi

Not at all... I guess most of the Coolants are anti-freeze, so there was no need... For Diesel, we had Anti-Freeze, but it was useless at that temperature...

I will go in feb2024 or march, with my scorpio N petrol 4x2 , will it manageable with nylon ropes on my 4x2 rwd suv in extreme snow or black ice?

with Nylon Ropes, I believe it will be very risky in "extreme" snow and chances of being stuck very high. At least Snowchains and All Terrain Tyres are recommended. If you don't want to invest in Snowchains, you can give a dry-run with Nylon Ropes on Snow near Kalpa or inside Kaza town so that you get an idea if it's helping. But in the extreme areas after Kaza like Hikkim and Kibber, it can get really extreme...

Bhai 4x2 Scorpio ya fir almost koi bhi gaadi leke aap Ladakh Spiti maze se kar sakte ho, lekin extreme conditions me nahi... Extreme Conditions: Snow, Slushy Mud, Desert Sand 4x4 is only used where conditions become extreme or you are stuck in a tricky situation.
How come not many did not use snow chain? Wasn't that useful? Was there any rear wheel SUVs in the convoy? Did they face any issue?

We were lucky that the Snow was soft. Majorly, people were running on AT Tyres without Snowchains only by Lowering the Tire Pressure (~22psi) and driving cautiously. Expedition Vehicles were mainly on MT Tyres. I was on HT Tyres without Snowchains. There are no issues on Snow until the Vehicle gets stuck into something. Otherwise, we went uphill & downhill on snow without chains on my HT Tyres. Thar, isuzu, Fortuner, ScorpioN almost every Vehicle was RWD + 4WD.

@@thealpinetraveller Thanks a lot for response. I am about to book the Scorpio N. But super confused if I can manage with RWD or do I really need 4WD. I am not hardcore offroader but a frequent traveller to off beat places and may also travel to spiti like places. Not sure a RWD scorpio can manage the show in the conditions like the one you witnessed in this video. Any expert opinion from you please?

I'm glad you're interested in the technicals. Though, I don't consider myself an expert but I'd love to give my feedback on the basis of the experiences I had & the experienced people that I met. 4WD comes into picture very rarely (even in mountains). Hardly it will come into action in less than even 1% of your time... So, unless you are putting your vehicle in slushy Mud anywhere or going into "extreme" Weather conditions like Snow or even in Desert for Dune bashing, the 4x4 will be very helpful. If it's a RWD, then Low Tyre Pressure, Snowchains and Road judgement are necessities for a smooth experience.

Hi, One last question. I have managed to book scorpio n z4 4wd. Wanted to know, in your spiti trip were there multiple instances where u had put differential lock ON along with 4wh/l? Or just 4wh/l can manage the slippery roads? Asking because z4 version of 4wd has only 4wh/l and no terrain modes and diff lock options.

Mahindra Vehicles come equipped with automatic Locking as there is no Manual Lockers provided (even in Thar) On the Front, they are Brake Locking Differentials (BLD) On the Rear, they are Mechanical Locking Differentials (MLD) In Z4, you'll only lack Traction Control (Sand, Mud, Snow etc modes)
Australia scorpio n has 230 mm ground clearance, What is mahindra doing to us

Bro, let me clear your doubt. There is no such thing like difference in Ground Clearance between Australian & Indian version of Scorpio N.
