Winter Hiking Solo in the Lakes: Coniston, December 2022

Last winter, days before Christmas, I travelled to Coniston to spend a few days hiking, reading & writing horror.
I stayed in Coniston Holly How YHA to do this, and I hiked up the Old Man of Conistion one day, and to Tarn Hows the other, while during the night I sat by the Christmas tree in the cozy lounge while I wrote & read my scary stories. As well as going on the odd night hike through the village.
The purpose of the trip was to, well, be in the Lake District as I'd write, read, & hike. Pretty self explanatory, but it got me realising I want to do more of that stuff every winter (generally when it's too cold to camp out), take refuge in the Lakes, Scotland or places similar, and go on a creative retreat as such (I'm currently planning my next one for this winter).
I had an awesome time in Coniston, as you can see in the video. Taking time alone for yourself is important for personal growth, mental health & creativity, and I urge everyone to frequently spend time with yourself, if you don't already.

Thank you to everyone watching, I appreciate each and every one of you!

Also, my brother and I hiked Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for Mind, we got 55 miles in before we were forced to cut it short due to food poisoning from an Inn we stayed in! We're better now, and will continue the walk this year so if you’d like to donate and support us I’ll add the link below! It’d mean so much, and for a good cause!

Lovely retreat for you Jen. The Lakes is definitely one of your happy places. Coniston is so special for our wider family Christmas gathering. Remembering also the L plates blowing of in the wind: Nana and the herd of sheep. And the pub where I bought you your first wine 🤪 So glad that you’re here again making some more memories. You’re such an inspiration. So proud of you as always xx

Excellent video. Hadn't stayed in Holly How for a number of years and went back at the beginning of June, I had forgotten how beautiful it was in that area and how much there is to explore. The woods behind the hostel are stunning and take you to Tilberthwaite which again is beautiful, and quite peaceful, from there you can go over to Elterwater.

Beautiful video, thanks Jennifer 🍁🍂 Don't ever apologise for being a rambling rambler. It made me giggle when you referred to it. (The way my mind works 😂) Finally got around to finding out about the dog house - "Monk Coniston Kennel - Locally referred to as ‘The Dog House’, this National Trust owned dog kennel built in the Gothic style was used for the Monk Coniston estate’s fox hounds." It is a beautiful stretch - you must be hefted to it 😉 Unleased dogs near icy lakes fill me with fear. They can fall through and drown under the ice. Just realised that perhaps the ridge on the top of their skulls is so they can break through from underneath 🤔 😮love the sound of pebbles on the ice - I wonder why I've never heard it before. The Crafty Baa looks lovely

Aw thank you! And that’s so cool, it’s an interesting place, I know some people use it as a little wild camping spot sometimes when on the Cumbria Way, which is pretty cool. Not sure if I would but I’ve considered it in previous videos. And yeah the dog off the lead by the ice freaked me out too! Especially when there were signs around the lake telling dog owners to keep them away from the ice! 😰 You should totally check out the Crafty Baa if you’re ever in Windermere! Such an awesome vibe, if quite odd 😂 they do incredible nachos, too 😁

Winter is the best time to hike the fells, there are very few people around during the winter and the fells are normally covered in snow, that's when you'll find me there.

I definitely recommend it 😁 if you’re looking to stay with the YHA more than once in a year, I definitely recommend becoming a member, I think it’s something like £20 a year and you get like 15% and sometimes 25% discount on stays & breakfast? And if you stay during the colder months it tends to be much cheaper, and during weekdays, too.
