Winter Fishing With A TINY SPOON!

Ойын-сауық

The crazy weather continues... Here we are closing in on February in Michigan and we still don't have ice on our lakes. I decided enough was enough so I took out my solo canoe and decided to do some ultralight fishing with a micro spoon. I knew that Yellow Perch were my best bet but you technically never know what you will catch when you throw a small, versatile bait like a Kastmaster.
**GEAR I USED**
Rod: discounttackle.com/collection...
Reel: discounttackle.com/products/s...
Braid: discounttackle.com/products/d...
Leader Line: discounttackle.com/products/y...
Kastmaster Spoon: discounttackle.com/products/a...
Crappie Nibbles: discounttackle.com/products/b...
When the water temperature is low, it seems like spoons do their best work. I was fishing this Kastmaster with a very simple retrieve. I would cast it out and allow it to settle onto the bottom. I would then twitch it lightly and slowly bring in my slack line, maintaining bottom contact the whole time. I was never afraid to stop for a few seconds and let it rest. Ultimately, in this cold water, you need to slow down and use small profiles. That being said, I wanted to keep the spoon moving enough to draw attention from the Yellow Perch cruising the area. The fish were very scattered so I never really dialed in a specific location - it seemed like they related to deep water just about anywhere in the lake.

Roughly 80% of kayak related deaths happen in cold water. In water below 40 degrees it only takes 3 minutes to lose all dexterity and 10 minutes to lose consciousness. Be safe out there.

  • @FishAnything

Definitely - safety always comes first when on the water! In cold temperatures, you have to be even more cautious. That is why I chose a body of water that I could easily swim to bank within 30 seconds from anywhere I was on the lake if an incident was to occur. I also think you have to know your own limits. I will never put myself in a situation where I feel the risk is greater than the reward. In this case, I had 100% confidence in the situation so I was not concerned. You won't see me on a large body of water in cold conditions like this.

When I was a little girl, the creak behind my grandparent’s house had yellow perch in it, and one day, in early winter, I decided to use these brown marabou jigs I had, and I caught fish for hours, just using brown marabou jigs! If you ever find any, I would definitely recommend trying them out 👀… I also had a similar day, throwing the same bait, and catching several small mouth 👀🎣!

Any body of water that has crayfish you will get results with a brown maribou jig bounced along the bottom. Unless there are SOOOO many crayfish in wide, slow waters that you just don't have a chance in the crowd.

A couple years ago I decided to spend more time with spoons ($ vs. other lures is one reason). I found 1/16 and 1/8 oz blue/chrome castmasters are reliable for rainbow trout. The 1/8 and 1/4 oz gold make great search lures in rivers. As the name implies they cast superbly. I have to say I haven't had much luck with the 1/32, 1/24 and 1/12 oz sizes.

  • @FishAnything

  • @StumpkillerCP

    @StumpkillerCP

    Жыл бұрын

Great in rivers (Chenango, Susquehanna, Otselic & Tioughnioga). I fan them out in ever increasing distances. I try to keep them just off the bottom casting upstream and when downstream I use a more pulsed retrieve and do short jerks of a few feet. Though, like any lure, some days they are fantastic and some days a dud. I haven't really played with spoons in streams. If I'm not fly fishing I use spinners (I like making my own) and tiny jigs. Lately - Mule jig heads & bodies!

It’s been such a strange winter here in W. Michigan. They say you’ve got to go to Cadillac to get safe ice. Hopefully that will change here in the next week or two since we’re supposed to get a cold snap. I usually go ice fishing with my dad on our home lake on MLK Day (I get the day off and the kids are in school) because the perch are starting to group up to spawn. I wonder if the lack of ice cover is messing with the water temp enough to keep’em spread out.

Any size 1000 Shimano or Daiwa would do a great job. Just depends on your price range. For like $50, you can get a Daiwa Revros LT 1000 which is a great option.

@@Cornelius798 y'all just got a bunch of snow up there right? I am from the Cross Roads but I am currently in The Hocking Hills for college and if I have learned one thing, it's that mountain weather is bipolar. No offense to anyone that suffers from that condition.

I have one on my main fishing kayak. This is more of a quick trip canoe that I don't feel the need to rig out too much.
