Winter Camping on Mount Washington - Heavy Packs, Deep Snow, Below Zero

Backpacking & Winter Camping on the side of Mount Washington.
For this adventure, I headed back up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to do some snow camping and make another attempt at doing a Mt Washington winter ascent for some frozen views of the Presidential Range. I tried this about a year ago, but a stomach bug and 85 MPH winds kind of put a damper on things. This time around, I also brought a hiking partner, Frank. We’ve done several winter trips together so far, but this would be his first time in the White Mountains.
Similar to last year’s trip, the plan was to set up a base camp at higher elevation, followed by a lighter weight trek up to the top of Mount Washington if weather conditions and visibility were agreeable. If the conditions were questionable, we made a back-up plan to scurry up the side of the nearer Mt Monroe. And of course, if the weather really got bad, we would just play it safe and stay below tree line.

I’ve had to walk away from that same exact route twice after getting up to Monroe. One due to fog and the other due to high winds and blowing snow. It gets so disorienting and sometimes you can’t tell which way is up or down let alone where on the trail you are. I think you made a good decision- Better to live for another day- the mountains will still be there for when you try again!

Hey. Check my channel's videos. I have a video which is 11+ minutes of hiking deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness, where of many of Sintax77's videos take place. Its nothing exciting, but I took it specifically to show people who otherwise can't get out there what it looks like. I hope you can enjoy it. I have a bunch of others of the White Mountains too you might dig. Be well.

Watched your stone shelter in snowstorm video a long time ago and then it came back on my suggested YT list the other day so I watched it again! Starting to watch this one now and will watch others too. "Cool" adventures. TIP- I learned this from my canoe trip buddy (we've been canoe tripping and hiking together for 50 yrs). He uses insulted, string closure nylon bags that he puts dehydrated food packets in after the boiling water has been added so that they stay hotter longer when re-hydrating. We use them, even in summer, to keep foods hot and the rehydration more efficient. Not sure where he got them, but I'm sure these can be home made for your winter trips! Stay warm!

Another enduro hike! You should get Frank to wear a jacket that is a bright colour, not white. He’s very hard to see in the alpine environment which could be dangerous. On my winter camping trips (in Ontario) I’ve boiled water at night, poured into two nalgenes that I then put into an insulated sleeve (in my case, thick socks) and then I put bottles into my boots. The hot water stops my boots from freezing and the sleeve plus boots insulate the water from the cold so in the morning I have liquid water to work with and some to drink at night. Another trick we ice climber so do is to carry our gloves inside our outermost clothing layer that is tucked into our pants. That way our gloves are always warm and don’t get lost. I mention this because I saw your gloves were strapped to the top of your pack.

January was a particularly brutal month temp wise in that region with most days below average. I hiked a couple of times up there last month and it was frigid well below zero. What did the overnight low go down to the night you guys camped did it go below zero?

There used to be a store up there that sold snow shoes. It was on the kangumangus highway. Rt 112. It was the store with that big Indian carved in a huge pole. You must have been down the kangumangus highway????? Its the nicest thing you could imagine with the fall foliage colors. The whites, my favorite place in the whole world.

Wouldn’t mind a hike and camp there at maybe the 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet mark on a sheltered outcrop, but I wouldn’t want to undertake a winter summiting attempt. I’ve seen to many videos with those hellish winds for that! 😢😢

Love your videos. Been following your Channel for about three plus years now. Ever consider bringing a drone with you? The DJI mini2 only weighs 249 grams. You could get some great shots, and scout out the area as well.

Another amazing video, and you know Ricky would have loved it too. I remember that video, and he's an inspiration. Still lived his best life despite his diagnosis.

You really need to add in at least pics of the meal after the hike before we just start assuming you're eating roller dogs from the gas station. lol.. i dont actually think the 2nd part. Now I want pizza. But really, mention where ya go. Would probably give places a minor bump in business.

for boots use small fabric made shopping bag after clean up from snow..leave inside the bag, and close it..and generally i leave inside of my tent after put in shopping bag..i use Salomon gore tex boots, and they don't get to much wet..in shopping bag if you live with hand warmer i think they will be great for morning..and to walk around i bought from amazon Baffin brand goose duck down booties..they light weight and great only $35 Dyneema tarp, i bought after watch one of your video..and last mount i had setup on snow because i used my amok hammock..it was no tree to hang..than i forgot my micro spikes on...got 60 holes..fixed and than i found 83"x108" tarp from aliexpress which is 15D nylon and only 11oz for $32 between dyneema 5 oz difference but over $200 cheaper..

Could have found a spot to camp sooner with a hammock! Tarp would have made a great spot to project onto as well. :)

Mt. Washington routinely kills winter hikers; check out the books by Ty Gagne about some very experienced hikers who died on that mountain. Discretion is the better part of valor and good that you turned back.

Could you use a small amount of salt in your water bottles to help lower freezing point of the water?
