Love the attitude! Sleeping in the wild and waking to snow at the tent door and you still say it’s pretty good. I’ve done this - you really get a reality check when you wake to freezing temps and gotta’ get a fire going so you can cook and get that camp coffee on!

I agree. Waking up in a frozen forest, knowing that you need to get out of your toasty warm sleeping bag, and start getting a fire going, while the frost instantly attacks your still sleepy body, is just not awesome. Still a lot better than not having the option of lighting a fire though!

Good strategy, not relying on gloves until the cold gets more extreme early in winter, get acclimatized before the REAL cold arrives. I also love the little shelter where you can keep your gear shelter and also "season" some birch bark as well. It looks as though you have about as much snow cover as we have here in Eastern Canada already. As for the leaking water, when that little bit froze from ground contact overnight, the expanding ice might have cracked the plastic, and then it starts leaking as that ice film melts. Still, as you say, unawesome to have a leaking water store. Love that siberian log fire every time I see you make it, very efficient and looks quite warm. Great video, as always, my friend. Keep warm and keep being awesome.

My damaged finger always predicted colder weather. I had to wrap it in tissue with a layer of aluminum foil for insulation. Spitting birch in a fireplace is not awesome. Even with a screen cover, it will throw embers on the floor or worse the shelter. The snowshoe is for swatting those Siberian winter mosquitos.

Nice video Lars and as for that age old power dilemma question of what to do in the cold I have been using Aukey brand power banks of 20000 mAH and unfortunately, like you, I have had to keep them next to my body in the really cold(-40C) but they have held up fine for a few years now. I am going to try their 30000 mAH and Ill keep you updated but I have no doubt they will work. I have tried using hand warmer packs on the camera gear but the severe cold just sucks the life out of them but I what have found that works surprisingly well is boiling water in my titanium canteen and then wrap a shemagh around it and it can keep your camera gear a bit warmer.

Good that you got your hands warm, numb fingers are decidedly Unawesome. As long as they don't start turning purple, campfires and holding tea mugs seem to work nicely. Strange that the bottle got a hole in it. You are also right to be wary of Bisphenol-A leeching from the plastic. PS. The Finnish word "Savotta" has been loaned from Russian "завод/zavód". It came to mean "Logging site" in Finnish. Up until the 1960s manual forestry labour was a vital part of employment for folks living outside of cities/townships. Especially in Eastern & Northern Finland & Lapland. "Savotta" used to mean dozens of men with saws & axes, horses with sleighs, someone to cook food, to freeze the sleigh tracks(for ease of transport) etc. A modern "savotta" is soulless, with huge machines lumbering through the forest and felling trees as if a bomb came through.

@@SurvivalRussia once I was in the field with a crew to film in cold conditions. It helps a lot to wrap a insulation around the camera-rig PLUS this heat-pads, that hold up to 8-12 hours inside, you can get for your bodyparts, put near the batteries. Look for "Thermopad Rücken-Wärmer" or "OnlyHot Zehenwärmer" thats the kind of pads I mean. It wasn't -20°C but something around -7°C. Worth a try. The trick here is to have a good foam for the insulation, not to heavy, but this one without that many air-bubbles" inside, don't know how to call it in english and to describe it better. Hope that helps a bit! And I think it is easier to wrap and heat a power bank, because of its shape, so sewing is not that much work.

I can see how these type fires are superior for heat production producing a wall of heat but they are always really smokey. Learning backwoods basics years ago I remember the pinnacle of the art of fire building for cooking was to build the fire with no or as little smoke as possible - you know so as not to give yourself away to the enemy or some such

Morning Lars. Might have a solution to your Water Leakage. Got any small Metal Milk Containers around the Homestead? You know the kind that hold a couple of gallons that Dairy Farmers used? Fill it up halfway, put on the lid, store it next to the Fire, top off with Snow, Bob's Your Uncle! Hope this helps. Thanks again and Take Care.

@@SurvivalRussia Cool! I have a problem storing water in my Vehicles in the Winter. Even if I leave them only half full, they tend to spring a leak when thawed. Then I remembered the old Milk Cans from my Grandpa's Farm, and here we are. In fact, I just did something Awesome! I went to Amazon and shopped around, and I found a 1 Gallon/ 4 Liter Milk Can made out of Stainless Steel for $30 USD. So I'll fill it half way, push in the Lid, and put it in my Vehicle for Emergencies. In fact, it has a good size Handle so if I need to Thaw it out, well, one Siberian Log Fire and a Russian Cooking Tripod should just be the Ticket! Hope this helps People out there in the SR KZreaderverse. Oh, if your Milk Container is Tall enough, just put the German Sleeping pad on it and use it for a Stool. Thanks again and Take Care.

I knew birch bark was a good fire starting material. I did not know that to get it to go really fast like you did it needs to be rubbed off with a knife like you did. That was interesting. I do have to wonder how come your tents don't come with built in ground sheets

G'day mate. I use Goal Zero Venture 30 in Lapland when visiting and skying with the family Lars, sits in the pack and works great, charges your phone 5 or 6 times, my Ghost Drift S 4 or 5 times, good item brother. Can't remember how much, not cheap as i recall but worth it. Also really good over here in Africa with all the sand and dust all over the place, rugged little thing. Let me know how you go. Cheers Moose p.s. cracking time out in the bush, enjoyed these two.
