Love watching you hand feed the birds. I feed the neighborhood birds a dog and a squirrel or two at home. At work I feed wild crows that live across the road in a big thicket across from the school bus yard. They know my bus and come sit on the fence when I drive in to my parking spot. I toss out fruit and nuts and seeds for them and one calls all the others in to feeding.

Your narration and videography is something special, you really need to have your own little television show on PBS!

I love Juncos! It’s winter here in Toronto and they are enjoying a mild spell, busy in my backyard, searching for weed seeds. Sweet,chubby little things! I wish them and Lesley a healthy and happy Year in 2023!

Your channel is the reason why i will live in Canada. Because of how cold it is, i would prefer living in a warmer Country, but since I discovered the existance of Blue jays, chickadees, nuthatches and crows, i never had any excuses TuT Canada loves immigrants! and that's why i Love Canada!

I live in Atlanta but am half French Canadian...100% French on mother's side. I love fall and winter most, love snow, and would love to live in Copenhagen. Fell in love with the magpies there while on vacation last fall. They are very friendly, funny, beautiful, intelligent birds and super interactive with humans. They'll hop right over to you and try to start a conversation.🤗

BEAUTIFUL AS ALWAYS LESLEY, HEARING HOW PEOPLE CANT BREATH OUTSIDE WITH THE FREEZE YOUR HAVING, I FEAR BIRDS WILL BE AFFECTED BADLY. THEY ARE GEARED FOR WINTER BUT THIS IS EXTREME I WONDER WHAT TOLL IT WILL TAKE ON NUMBERS.

Their coloration, the gradations of blue against the stark white snow, is absolutely breathtaking. Jays are beautiful, very intelligent birds. I never get them here at my feeders...but have counted 30+ types of birds that visit. I love watching them all (and my 2 kitties certainly do as well!)! Such a relaxing and enjoyable hobby. 🐦🦉🦅❤🐱🐱

Thank you for another beautiful video! I'm sitting here with my Brittany Spaniel, Meggie, on the couch next to me and when that hawk called out she stood right up with her ears perked, looking for it!!! Lol! Those red squirels sure can be little stinkers...when they come around our feeders they will not let the birds feed! They think it's all theirs! I always say they got the crazy eyes! Just watch 'em, they do! @@

Love it! I call the blue jay squeaky-gate call the "school swing" call, because it sounds just like the way our old heavy wooden schoolyard swings sounded with their heavy metal chains that needed oiling. Those swings could crack a skull open, which is why they are no more.

Great caught. Looks like you call out come and get, nuts to everyone. Beautiful movie from the winter landscape.

You name your jays. I love it. Also that you can tell then apart and understand their interactions. And like a wild bird on your head. This sounds so like me and my Starlings. My best buddy was Pippi Star. On my shoulder, yelling at the others from the safety of my head. Bringing her first babies to meet me. You have a far more beautiful spot, I must say. I loved this video so much.

Haha that squirrel spat was the best! We have red squirrels who have arguments on our porch but we haven’t seen them since it got cold. The chipmunk pair does it too but much more quietly lol

Peanut taking a ride on your head sounds so funny and cute. Another beautiful "Bird Story," as always. I'm amazed at your ability to recognize individual birds, but I'm also glad I don't have that skill myself. I'd worry too much about each and every bird and squirrel who visited my feeders if I knew them all by name. There was one bird that I could recognize, a chipping sparrow who had some flight feathers that stuck out at odd angles, presumably because of an injury. He had a lame foot as well, and I named him "Crumples." But now I haven't seen him for a couple of weeks and I fear the worst. Nature has no mercy.

Yes Iv seen quit a few robins in my front yard foraging this dec. It is aways nice To see them in march Wich is only 2 months away now. I once saw a large group of bluejays In my nabours tall back yard tree making a blooping Sound while bobing up and down Never saw them Again it was in the Fall about 2or3 years ago. Yes they are Beautiful.

Great video! I love birding in Winter, I always have been amazed how these beautiful creatures can resist the lowest cold temperatures even -50° F to -60°F Below zero in the past couple days and they're just like nothing happens, they just go out in the cold and live their lives only wearing their plumage its all , I'm just amazed. Totally agree. Isn't that amazing how they can withstand it all, yet to bring the joy of Spring again to us, in a few months?! Surely help of good Samaritan people such as Lesley help and we all have to do our part. So make it a point to hang up a feeder, every day you can, in difficult winter months.

The blue jays are so pretty against the snow💕 Cardinals too!

I completely enjoyed this video. The snow is lovely, but it makes me quite happy that here in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, we rarely see snow. If we do, it is usually gone in a day, which I like. Portland may get some snow tomorrow, but I doubt we will down here. If it does show up, the weather people are saying it will be gone by Tuesday. Watching you hand feed those birds is such a happy thing to watch. Thank you. You improved my mood greatly today. Be well, be happy.

Surprise surprise surprise!! This morning I woke up to about 2-3" of snow!! Serves me right for bragging about hardly ever having snow. It won't last, but it is pretty as long as I have no where to go. Thks again Leslie, I watched this video again, it is just gorgeous. Be well.

Hi Lesley, want to tell you again that your videos are so beautiful, peaceful, & relaxing to watch. I would love to have the personal relationships you do with just one wild bird. You're so blessed to have so many! I'd be shivering in the cold too to spend as much time as possible with them. I know it makes you feel great to be able to supplement them through your harsh winters there. I love feeding & observing my backyard birds so much. I spend most my day watching them through my patio window. I have 7 baths/water dishes & 10 feeders. I get a nice variety of species including a family of crows I put peanuts out for under one of my trees. I've got to read up on learning how to befriend & hand feed birds. I want to experience this first hand for myself. I'd absolutely love to visit to several of the nature preserves in my area regularly & try to do this! I would know the story how you learned to do this. In the meantime it brings me so much joy & warms my heart watching you do it, take care! :-)

@nick sweeney Love those buzzy little guys. I put out woodpecker suet cakes, peanut ball treats, dried meal worms and a seed blend with peanuts in it. The nuthatches and my sapsucker and downy woodpecker visit several times a day. Really popular here is hot pepper suet. The birds all go for that...cardinals, bluebirds, mockingbirds, goldfinch, East Carolina wrens, twohees (so pretty). I'm looking forward to seeing my little cat bird arrive. I have a pair of those that have been visiting my feeders for the last 3 years. My 2 indoor cats respond/meow back at them when they screech...so funny! We're having some very strange weather in Atlanta. It is currently in the 70s from a "polar vortex" 17 two weeks ago! I hope that doesn't spawn any tornados!

@nick sweeney Ha-ha! It's called "Hot Pepper Delight" and I order it from chewy.com. Walmart also sells it. You do NOT want to touch your eyes after handling these suet cakes. The birds don't sense the hotness... but that stuff will tear you up. Wear gloves or wash your hands with soap and warm water after handling. Mockingbirds, catbirds, bluebirds, cardinals, gold finches, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers..all go nuts for this stuff. Good luck!

@nick sweeney Yes, it's "zesty" but not in a good way. it was made that way to deter squirrels. 🐿 It will irritate your eyes and burn your nose/throat if you hold the suet cake near your face...and probably burn anything it comes in contact with, so keep it where your dogs can't get to it. 😝⚠️

@nick sweeney The way they go after that suet with such gusto, I'm surprised they haven't gotten some in their eyes. They're all ravenous now with the weather so cold and rainy. We had a very heavy rainstorm here mid-afternoon. Fortunately it didn't last too long, but I had a half-drowned male cardinal waiting it out on my patio. He was the saddest, wettest little thing and was trembling. I wanted to scoop him up and dry him off with a warm towel. Fortunately, I saw him later and he looked a bit drier and was really enjoying the peanut butter/HoneyNut Cheerio balls I put out. 🤗

@nick sweeney Just read your msg., and one from my daughter who often texts me after midnight (my time) as she lives in CA. My cat Tia woke me at 3:00 AM head bunting me out of deep sleep and meowing her "I wanna be fed breakfast NOW" song (3 hours early...). Both kitties are well fed and terribly spoiled, so not sure what THAT was about...Tummies full, they are now falling back asleep next to me purring. About to join them as 4 AM now (!!) 😴🐱🐱💤

@@thinkabout288 Yaaah. This is not the kind of bowl you use for birds or feathered creatures. Its the kind that horny four legged ones such as Rams play with other Animals. And unlike some minutes back New England Pets are leading by 3! at the end of half time! So for all birds sake Go RAMS GO.

Lovely video of your birds! The nuthatches have become a fave this year. Condensation is an even greater enemy to your camera and especially lenses. When you come in from the cold, let your gear in camera bag and in the coldest room you have. A sudden shift into warm room or car will inevitably lead to fungus. Good luck!

Having been a KC-135(R) pilot (often in Thule, Greenland, or Lajes, Azores, "Acores"), I can say with authority, that each and every Blue Jay, seems to have a 'complete avionics package' installed somewhere, including TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) and VHF-Air + NAV Radios, because they sure appear to be under the command of (ATC Air Traffic Control). More precision in their take-off's and landings; far more 'take your turn/order of approach'; just as you would see at any RCAF/Canadian Forces Base or commercial/international airport, than any other species. (,,, and not clowns, like starlings, or sneaky, like their Corvid relatives, crows or blackbirds)

Love this Leslie. I am in Toronto and all my jays disappeared early December. Just getting sparrows, nut hatches and lots of squirrels right now. Where are you located? I put a six foot folding table out for the winter months and spread the nuts and seeds the full length so the squirrels don't fight so much and the birds can get in. Good to know they like kittie kibble. Will start putting some out.

Always glad to hear about the little feathered cuties As its an irruption year I have been seeing Red Breasted Nuthatches at least two are visiting because they accidentally showed up at the same time and saw each other as you know in birdie world unaffiliated birds meeting starts a chase. I feel bad for the irruption migrators as it is hard on the little guys but they are so cute and much smaller than our typical White Breasted Nuthatches. Are normal winter visitors are Pine Siskins(typically only a few) and then the cute american sparrows known as the Dark eyed Junco(slate variant) and White Throated Sparrows From seeing Juncos in late November I take it that not all of them migrate? where I live in Virginia we only see them in winter. It used to be Bachelor flocks of young males but the last few years we have been getting smaller mixed flocks I suspect based on behavior that they are paired Juncos higher on the Junco hierarchy but I can't be sure because I can't tell birds apart at a glance on a individual level. They are adorable when they fly with their tail feather patterns we look forward to seeing them every year. The other regular winter visitor the White Throated Sparrows have lots of spunk I've seen them chase away the larger Northern Cardinals when they come out to feed in the Evenings. Both Northern Cardinals and White Throated Sparrows hang out far later than the other birds they actually stick around for a while after sunset to feed though they have flown off before the last rays of light fade. Hopefully they are careful as that twilight time is where Owls and Foxes become fairly active. For project feederwatch this year we ended up briefly breaking our personal record for the most downy woodpeckers in close proximity with 6 coming all at once the day it really snowed. Of course as always with downy woodpeckers it didn't last they had to go and try and chase away all the other downy woodpeckers because that is what birds do. I love birds. :)

Yesterday, one of my goofball blue jays was mimicking a redtailed hawk screech to scare everyone else. Today, they were doing rusty hinge noises, and when I played along, they got excited. They're hilarious. I had one GRIN at me, you could see it in his face, as he went "CAW CAW CAW" like a crow, and I repeated it, and the game was ON! ...until he got distracted by a peanut. Still frustrated that after two years of trying to form a bond with my crows, the ONE day they flew in at the precise time I feed, very clearly waiting on me (something they'd NEVER done in these two years, and the ultimate goal finally realized!) ...a hawk flew in, scared them away, and they haven't done it since. In fact, they're very sporadic about coming in to eat my food at all, lately. Most recently, I was at work and my mom was frantically texting me that one sat outside our window calling out, and ate peanuts off of our railing when she went to give him food. I know they recognize us as friends, they just don't do the daily feedings that other people are blessed to have their crows come and do. Some people have ALL the luck, lol.

Beautiful video as always Lesley, I'm a new sub but ive been binge watching your videos with my husband. we're both bird people too! Your jays look so gorgeous on the snowy backdrop. Their colours really pop and you can really tell how, well, BLUE blue's face feathers are; at least compared to how white some of the other jays are. I live up in edmonton which you might know is the magpie capital of north america. and boy are those little corvids fans of the snow. they're so smart too, using plastic coffee cup lids and other litter they find as sleds and riding them down car windshields and sloped rooftops and such. I could watch the magpies play in the snow all day. You could try getting a professional rain protector for your camera, they come in black or just clear plastic, im not sure if that would spook your birds or not though, Theyre not too expensive and might be worth a shot anyway.

Another wonderful video, Lesley :). Love all the different birds! If your bird journals were books, I would most certainly buy them! Such comforting, and relaxing sounds, visuals, and stories. Yesterday, for the first time, I saw a bird actually taking a bath in my bird bath! It was a female house sparrow. I was delighted! Up until then I can just seen birds drink from it.

I've been feeding a crow the past 4 years and there is a pair of red-tail hawks that like to chase him and steal the food from him. Blackjack just caws and his small murder joins him and together they dive bomb that hawk and emerge unscathed every time. Amazing to watch this from my 4th floor apt. patio. I counted over 30 kinds of birds that visit my feeders and suet cakes. I live in Atlanta.

@@russelder9743 Blackjack is a very courageous crow, leader of his murder. He is not easily intimidated, not even by a red tail hawk! 😉 I love watching his antics. When he perches on the back of my patio chairs, cocks his head and looks at me...my heart melts. Last year he left me a love gift right in the middle of my patio railing, where I leave him healthy snacks...he gave me a juicy red strawberry. He's my sweet boy! 🍓

Leslie J. Awesome picture! I looove cardinals. I wish I could hand feed either the male or female that I’ve been feeding for 2 years in my backyard. They either live really close by or in my backyard itself, as they spend most of their time there. I couldn’t imagine ever handfeeding them, on top of it supposedly being very rare and difficult to do, my experience with them have made me feel that it will never happen- they’re so skittish and even still fly away when I approach my feeders if they’re near them

Thank you! This is Franklin, one of many Northern Cardinals I've received into rehab over the years. I released him in 2013, and he still comes to my back yard for superworms and mealworms as well as peanuts and sunflower/safflower seed that I put out for all of my birds.

Well, if it's ANY consolation, you should know that I too worry deeply about my "kids" as I've come to call them over the years. I'm in Tulsa, OK, so don't experience temperatures anywhere NEAR what you do. Last week, temps dropped to 7-8 degrees with a horrible North wind blowing at 30 mph. I still go out on those days, early in the morning and again an hour or so before dusk. I put loads of seed out, and then sit on my patio with a bowl of superworms, and another bowl of mealworms for my Mockingbirds, Downy woodpeckers, Red Belly woodpeckers, Blue Jays and White Throat sparrows. Oh, and I have several Carolina Wrens that come in for worms too. I have a small propane heater that I plug in, and it helps keep at least my legs warm. But they all know me; and they seem to trust me somewhat. Some will take food from my hand, and you'd LOVE to see my Red Belly grab superworms that I throw high into the air for him. I also have a Red Shouldered hawk that I raised (in rehab) two summers ago; she comes screaming in for mice that I keep on hand for her (not live mice - frozen and purchased). Bucket (the Red Shoulder) has been coming back since I released her during 2017. She's an incredibly special hawk. So again, I know how you love them, Lesley-I'm right there with you too.

@@snlself Aww my gosh Leslie, wow what experiences you've had and are continuing to have. I'm amazed so much with the Red shouldered hawk, what a lovely thing and the red belly grab superworms you throw high up into the air for him, wow. So freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing your stories sure made me smile. It's nice to connect with people who understand my love for the birds because they themselves are in the same boat as me :)

I think I start recognizing Hermoso.

I know that snow on his beak is just too cute, and the squirrels well they are just little rascals, haha! I'm not sure if I should name the other gray jay yet because I don't know if it will manage to hold a territory close by for me to continue getting to know it. I do, however, call him little gray jay. If the little guy can manage to stay in my life after Spring I will definitely name it then :)

The snow is gorgeous! I like the snow on Blue's beak at 2:52+. Wow! Right after that you were stormed with birds. That was actual time, right, not sped up? Hatch's agitated call reminded me of Squirrels' chatter. Oh how I would LOVE to have Crows around like yours. I am trying to figure out where to put a tall metal pole (and not make it difficult for the man that mows my yard) with some sort of platform for birds to eat and be free from threat from cats, including the one that adopted me. I'll have to get with my yardman and make a flower garden for Butterflies, etc., and put the cat-proof bird feeder in the middle of it. You are so fortunate to have the largest of the deer species, along as it isn't rut season. I have not witnessed Squirrels fighting. OH MY! One stomped his foot at 6:10! Enough is enough! lol How far from your home is the 'usual' feeding spot. I hope you do get a video of Peanut getting a ride on your head! Wow! Hatch's wing flicking sure is fast! I noticed earlier that the retreating Squirrel went into a hole in the snow. I apologize for such a long comment. I comment as I watch. I know you post every week, but it seems like forever since your last one. The migraines mess with the concept of time. Thank you so very much for your posts.

I love when they have snow on their beaks too. Such cuties. Yes, that was in real time, they move so quickly don't they? haha! I can total see how Hatch's agitated call would remind you of Squirrels chatter, it really does sound similar. Yes, I think that would be a lovely idea for you to make something to put feeders up. I know you would love it. Moose are quite cool, so big too wow. Haha those squirrels are something else, they really know how to irritate me but at the same time, they are such characters. Oh my. Feeding places are scattered throughout but roughly about a half km to 1 km from home is where I normally start feeding them (that's where their territories are) It would so funny to have a video of me walking while Peanut is on my head, what a sweetie. hahaha . Don't worry about if your comment is long, I didn't find it too long and it was nice to read :) Take care of yourself hunny. Much love to you :)

Love your Blue Jay videos! I have so many that come to my yard. I whistle a certain whistle and then throw out peanuts and egg shells. I've had as many as 20 come! Would love to get them to eat put of my hand. Could you give me any tips on this?

My Jays got me today. There is one that has that ability to mimic a red tailed hawk call. Winter has become scary here because a pair of great horned owls have taken over the barn owls nest in my neighbor's barn only around 1500 feet from my house.

@@LesleytheBirdNerd I am amazed at how little I knew about Jays until I moved to a tiny village where there aren't too many true predators that bother them. My windows have claimed more songbirds than the feral cats who live around us. I do have to admit my Blue Jays are spoiled because they have taken care of the nuisance bees. I watched the mother Jay dig and peck at the ground finding the queen yellow jacket and calling in the family. I have also seen them go after anything that bothers hummingbirds or honey bees. Thank you for what you do.

So relaxing to watch your videos! Peaceful. Do you use raw peanuts in the shell or roasted ones?
