I, like you and many artists, started out with Winsor & Newton Professional when I was in college as it was the only artist grade watercolor available in art stores at the time. Living in Seattle, I eventually shopped at the Daniel Smith store and discovered their beautiful watercolors which have so much depth, and switched for the most part. But there are some WNP colors I still love and have been revisiting them lately. WNP has always made spectacular yellows and reds/pinks, and the glow you get from their Alizarin Crimson and Rose Madder is really special so I understand why many botanical artists still use them despite being fugitive, although I'm fine with other reds. My favorite WNP yellow pigments were unfortunately discontinued, i.e. New Gamboge (PY153) and Transparent Yellow (was PY97, now PY150) was a perfectly transparent version of Hansa Yellow Medium and very close to Aureolin in my opinion and I'll be bummed when I finish my last tube. But I've recently looked at the Winsor Yellow (PY154) and Winsor Lemon (PY175) and like them very much, a little more delicate and glowy than other brands. Also, I do prefer Winsor Violet because it's more subtle than other dioxazines (PV23) so that I don't have to dull it down as much as DS or MG. And a couple of their blues are very nice, I like their Cerulean (PY35) for tropical skies and its crazy granulation--I have three Ceruleans I use and they're all very different (PB36 DS Cerulean Chromium is much deeper and MGraham Cerulean is a barely granulating bright blue that works as a non-staining phthalo like color, great for PNW autumn skies). I agree with everyone about the lack of good WNP earth tones and few can surpass Daniel Smith in that area. Agree that they work well for glazing and many artists are used to the way they work, including their orangey Burnt Sienna. I have a couple of the WN watercolor markers for signatures, and I have some nice Series 7 and Cotman brushes. I think one of the issues with WN may be that they're part of a big conglomerate now, so consist artist grade quality can be a problem, it's been awhile since I've bought new WNP tubes so maybe will look on ebay for older tubes. I prefer buying from small companies like DS and MGraham when possible. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I love comparisons! I appreciate the other comments, too! And another note, the Lemon Yellow Nickel Titanate (PY53) looks similar to other brands, also opaque. I don't use it, but I imagine it would work more like a warm buff titanium for mixing, so a specialty color rather than a substitute for their Winsor Lemon.

Great comment and thank you ! Theres some helpful information here for others . I've not tried their sabel brushes but do have several of their cotman brushes which I actually like and recommend to students to use with their cotman paint . Only issue I have with those is the handles crack really bad and the paint chips off . No I dont leave my brushes in water either . A note on the m Graham not granulating as much , I completely and totally agree. But I believe that's because their pigments are ultra finely milled and I love that they lay down smooth for realism. It's nice to have options whether to granulate or not . But when I want texture , Daniel smith all the way 🙂

Agree with that, M Graham (and Sennelier) are finely milled, which can a bit flat and very staining, but perfect in the right circumstance. I haven't had that problem with the Cotman brushes, but rarely use them--I have some small sizes, 1 & 3, and they're useful for detail as they have nice points and are pretty stiff for wc brushes. I remember now where I saw the PY53 Nickel Titanate being used--in portraits where it helps adds a creaminess to skin and gives body. I rarely do portraits like that, but it was a cool video, wish I could remember the YT artist :) Thanks for the reply, I loved your commentary and all the other comments too!

Hi, Nicole. Watching your review, I began to wonder if we were using the same brand! I use a 12 colour palette, including some of those in your review, and all are tubes squirted into pans. I have a very different experience, particularly with the burnt sienna! I'm looking at the colour mixing by glazing chart that I do with the students, and the solo burnt sienna is as clear as the rest (there isn't a single wishy-washy colour there) in a chart of 144 mixes. Then I wondered .... I'm in Europe, and the paints I use are made in the UK. So perhaps the problem is less about the brand, and more about where it is manufactured? The chart's done on Sennelier 300gsm NOT, so maybe that makes a difference (you don't mention what paper you are using, and as you know, it does make a difference)? If I'd done it on Arches, for example, which is a much softer sizing (so it's a little more absorbent), maybe it would have produced a different result. A big thanks for flagging up the issue with the lemon! I've used the series one lemon for years, and it's beautiful, so was surprised when I saw a 'permanent lemon' listed when doing an order for my next group of students. I decided to stick with the one I like, and am now thankful that I have.

I do love the colours in the Winsor and Newton and sennelier range especially the reds, perfect for botanicals. I do love their rose dore, rose madder, Quinacridone gold, magnesium brown, dioxazine purple, Winsor red, olive green. Their quinacridone gold does contain Quinacridone burnt orange PR206 but it is now discontinued, so all of colours that had PR206 are now perylene red variations PR179 😟. First Quin gold PO49, Gamboge PY153, now Quinacridone burnt Scarlet PR206 kzread.info/dash/bejne/maisrdCqfbLcdps.html

I just now found you and love your work. I search for videos like this because I love other artists feelings and ideas about paint. I am a watercolor teacher and pigment nerd. In this brand, I love the Winser Violet (Dioxizine) PV23, more than any other brand . But I prefer Schmincke brand. I also want to point out that all brands of Quin Gold are now hues. They are mixing with Quin Orange, not the true Quin Gold. Quin Orange is PO48. Real Quin Gold was PO49.

@@nicolemartinart5819 The pigment information on the tube of Daniel Smith Quin Gold now is PO48 and PY150. It has been for two years now. The stock pile has been gone for almost 2 years. Denise Soden on, (In Liquid Color) on youtube gave her favourite Daniel Smith Quin Gold an official farewell in 2017 because Daniel Smith annouced then they are officially out. If you got a PO49 tube recently you are lucky and got an old one. I got my PO49 stash from Daniel Smith back in 2012 when I learned they stocked up and running low. Quinacridone Sienna by DS was made with PO49 and PR209. It was breathtaking. I was sad that I didn't get more of those before PO49 ran out. Its just not the same. Its the same with their Sap Green. The winsor newton's pans are smaller but they fit into a standard box just fine . I have some in various other boxes . You can also use a little glue tack or double sided tape to help hold them in place if you find they slide around too much but I've never had that issue.

Beautiful test painting, I was mesmerised watching you build it up. I live in UK so Winsor & Newton can be got for extremely good prices in the offers and the sets too. Some of the best offers don’t ship to the States unfortunately. And they were my first paint brand so I feel I know them and the way they perform. To be fair about the sets, they do say they try to provide an all around choice within the palettes so that there is something there for every paint style. For instance I know another well known KZread artist who loves the lemon yellow, (which in this set is nickel titanate, not the same pigment as in Daniel Smith) she loves the opacity and softness. Like you I find the mixes of W&N to be very clean. Some of their colours I also feel perform among the best, especially when we get towards the difficult rose/magenta area, potters pink and caput mortuum and their granulation is “pretty” to my mind compared to some of the other big brands. Their old manganese was spectacular and I’m still crying it’s no longer available. I do feel the consistency changed when production moved to France, in spite of them saying they were sticking to the recipes. I have a lot of vintage Winsor and Newton left in my stash and the consistency is creamy and heavily pigmented compared to the newer paints. So I agree they are coasting a bit these days, but still a very good paint if bought in the sale prices. So much depends on location, so Daniel Smith and Schmincke and M Graham are nearly alway sky high price points for where I live, so they remain my treat paints. I’ve just bought some MGraham as a gift to my husband (and myself lol)…so looking forward to trying those very much. I would also say that I sometimes don’t find the colours from tubes allowed to dry in pans perform as well as their extruded pan paints. And I’ve found that to be the case with Daniel Smith too, who don’t have extruded dry paint. I’ve bought a number of their sets and many of the colours lose their intensity on re-wetting from the pan. Only Schmincke for me have cracked using paint from a tube dried into a pan. I think this is why W&N used to caution against decanting the tube paints into pans. There are always so many variables with brands, but thank you for this clear and interesting insight into your experiences and comparisons. I’m definitely going to be checking out other brands on the burnt Sienna.

Thank you for your comments 🙂 you know it's funny I was actually thinking of revisiting this review in an updated video because I have come around some to these paints . Not for all things but I do find for soft , delicate floral work I actually really enjoy them . I've added some new colors to my palette since this video and I'll also say I think a few things went wrong that worked against WN here . To name one thing, I believe when the pans are new they dont release as well because my paints are giving more color now that they've been worked a bit . The pigments are very bright just not as saturated in various colors especially the earth tones .

I enjoyed your comparisons between brands, I use the quin magenta from winsor Newton and completely agree about it being one of the most saturated and clean mixtures, they use PR122, I'm super picky about my reds and magenta's and as much as I love Daniel smith they use PR 202 which is beautiful but not the magenta pigment I prefer. My absolute favourite cobalt teal is Mgraham's I had bought there cobalt set to try and love them but Ive discovered over time I prefer my paints without honey. . Also just a side note try sennelier's ultramarine blue, it's the only sennelier color I keep in my palette, beautiful paints but I prefer Daniel smith. I agree completely about the burnt Sienna from winsor Newton, right now my burnt Sienna is schminke's which is pr101, I usually prefer PBr7 but I'm trying out schminke for the first time. There lovely but I still gravitate to my Daniel smiths, oh yes... Also cerulean blue!!!... Which I'm super picky about, I prefer PB35 and do not enjoy daniel smiths version I prefer winsor Newton or holbein for this pigment. I dislike the chromium versions their not clean and bright enough imo right now winsor Newton is in my palette although I do give a thumbs up for mgrahams version deep cerulean super beautiful. Mgraham is my favourite brand for acrylic and oil paints. Great video it's nice to hear your thoughts. Hope you have a great day :)

@@nicolemartinart5819 I do think Mgraham's are quite unique, the pigment load/payoff is huge in every medium! I love their acrylics and oils, they are like a creamy butter and have awesome coverage, I used to buy Liquitex and golden, but the last year I've found after I tried mgrahams I prefer them even over my goldens. Both their oils and acrylics are so rich would be the best word I can think of, I just love love the pigment load and you will too I think. I'm excited to watch and see if you review in the future. Yes my apprehension about now using honey based, I am a studio artist but I try to plein air sometimes, I like kayaking and painting when I do. When I was first starting trying honey based paints I tried both sennelier tester set and mgrahams cobalt set. I prefer the mgrahams to sennelier but both are lovely. I waited 7 weeks after pouring the pans, I thought for sure they were dry and I brought them out to plein air and they spilled horribly so I no longer put them in my travel palettes. Senneliers lemon yellow is so runny I even tried just putting a small amount in the bottom of the pan ect. I still love my mgrahams in my studio palette though even cobalt violet rewets beautifully which in daniel smiths even is quite anaemic. so would you say M Graham is far better than Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith ?

  • @nicolemartinart5819

    @nicolemartinart5819

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes absolutely 1000% ! M Graham are made in small batches and have the highest pigment concentration of any other watercolor paint. So if you do get them remember to use just a tiny amount. There's no need to scrub on the paint like you would with Winsor and Newton. You'll end up getting far too much and it may apply more like gouache almost if you're applying it too thickly. Because it's just that pigmented. But used correctly they are highly transparent, a little goes a long way, they have an amazing luminosity and because of the high pigment concentration I'm able to easily achieve rich saturated darks. I do find that the pigments are more finely milled than any other brand which I personally like but if you like very granular colors, like heavy granulation then you're not going to get that here with m Graham. Because they are more finely milled the result is a much smoother more consistent paint. You come away with a much smoother result on the paper which I personally really like. The other thing is that they are a honey based paint. Which means they are not going to be travel friendly because the honey acts as a humectant that draws moisture from the air, and keeps the paints in a semi moist state. So even after years of them being dried in a paint palette they're going to re wet instantly with just the slightest touch of a damp brush. I love M Graham paint for this reason because they never crack or fall out of a pallet. However if you live in an extremely humid climate you may find the paint too sticky. Or if you enjoy taking your paint out plein Air they may not set enough for you and you may find that they'll run out of the pallet. So really it is a trade-off but that honey adds an extra level of dimension and luminosity to the paint that can't be achieved without it and of course it means that they rewet very easily and there's no need for scrubbing. I personally like how easily they rewet because it's so much gentler on your soft Fine art brushes. But I did want to let you know that because there are honey based paint they're likely going to be for a studio artist only.

And if you watch my channel for any length of time you'll know that I typically don't like to rave about things or give overly glowing reviews I almost never do actually. My Hobby Lobby sells Grumbacher Academy as well.. they are very nice for a student paint, my favorite out of all the student versions I have tried tied with Van Gogh. Massively better than WN Cotman. They have a few colors you don't typically see in a student paint as well such as chromium oxide green and perylene maroon. I suggest giving them a try before paying for the WN prof. It's SO expensive and even MORE expensive at HL. If you must use the 40% off coupon and get one tube at a time. WN does have some nice colors, I follow a very accomplished artist who swears by a limited list of their paints and she could use anything in the world (such as their Windsor violet), but it's hit or miss and if you are just starting out it's a HUGE investment. Other professional brands you might consider are Da Vinci, which is very good, and much more cost effective (for example you can get their split primary mixing set at the same price as Daniel Smith but in tubes 3x the size), and Paul Ruben (make sure you get the professional version) who sells a gorgeous 48 pan set on Amazon for about $75, as well as some smaller sets. The only downside to Paul Ruben is you can't buy replacement single tubes yet in the US. They did just put some tube sets on the market so hopefully soon.

Thank you for the wonderful review! The first student grade watercolor set I got was the cotman version. While it's a fine set on its own, I still had issues with the pans being hard to rewet and the colors not being as vibrant as they could be on better watercolors paper. I know a lot of artists swear by the professional brand and I even have some tube paints I really like from that set (Payne's Gray is lovely). However, I just don't see these as top 10 material. It's so hit or miss. And while some people may not mind this as they had good experiences in the past, I've just found better artist grade paints to work with that rewet better and have better vibrancy and for a better price. (Schmincke, M Graham, Sennelier). For beginners, if they get frustrated by the student grade sets, I can't blame them because I did too even on better watercolor paper. A shame because certain colors are really nice.

@@nicolemartinart5819 TY, I have the DS and put together a little palette of 5ml tubes to go with it. At only $5-7 a tube it was easier to afford. I also have basically the same set up with Da Vinci who is at the same price point but larger tubes. If M Graham would offer something similar it would be a big help and probably bring them a lot of business, it's so much easier financially to replace a color here or there as you run out. Plus its a huge risk if you discover you really don't care for the formula. I found some people on Etsy offering a "sample set" but it's basically just a dot of each color, and not really enough to work with for any length of time.

I read so many goods things about Winsor's Burnt Sienna, about how glowing it appears and how vibrant it is compared to other PBR7 versions. But when I finally got it, I was so disappointed! It's very pale and weak, and it's straight out of the tube! the pigment load is almost like a student grade. I even prefer Cotman's version over it. Being used to Daniel Smith's saturated style and intensity, I find that I do not like this subtle and pale style of WN, and I've bought many colors before I realized this :(

Several of their colors are more like student grade paints but especially the earth colors . You can feel the fillers and extenders with the brush . The paint feels thicker and often bubbles. I find it nearly impossible to get rich , saturated darks with WN paints . I much prefer M Graham or Daniel Smith . If you enjoy that hue of wn burnt sienna it’s PR101 transparent red iron oxide in other brands 🙂

Oops! An apology for not watching the whole video before commenting on the swatches! I've just continued watching, and you've just mentioned that you're using Arches paper - which I mentioned as a possible cause of the differing results not knowing that this was what you are using!! Incidentally, the students use a total of ten different watercolour papers, including two wood pulp papers, so they get a good chance to make comparisons in their 20 weeks plus homework. :D

@@jerseyjoe1677 they do, but it's a fugitive pigment and and they shouldn't, because it's not suitable for professional artwork you intend to sell. Van Gogh used it to paint red roses many years ago, now they are entirely white, and most people don't even realize they aren't supposed to be. Alizarin crimson genuine will fade rapidly when exposed to light, and I mean, you'll see it start to change within just a few weeks; fully gone within a few months in light-fast testing.

@@jerseyjoe1677 yes! I highly recommend the permanent version for sure 😊 but watch out for Daniel Smith's version, the pigment they use is NOT really permanent and fades rapidly in tints over 50% in dilution. My favorite permanent alizarin crimson is by m graham. And my light-fast testing has shown that it stays true.

And that's exactly why I don't buy sets. Well I will if I can get them at a ridiculously low price. For example: I purchased three of the daniel smith pocket palette boxes for $25.00. Around $30.00 with tax and shipping. I got the 15 half pan mix set, the earth set and the inspiration set for that low low price. Plus an empty palette box. When originally the empty box and the 15 mix box were $100.00. Watch these youtubers. They all tend to parrot one another. When they carry on about something being bad you can bet the price will drop and you can buy it up cheap. Most of the youtubers aren't even painters. They just swatch colors and repeat what they hear. Most have never plein air painted a day in their life. In short, when I can get 27 half pans of Daniel smith paints for the price of one tube, then I'll buy a set. Otherwise, I'll stick to creating my own. Besides, the greatest part of being part of a creative community was seeing how each artist created their own sets, palettes, boxes, easels, etc. Making ones own supplies is half the fun. Back in the day when we saw someone with a store bought at we just laughed and talked about how much of a newbie they were. You give 'em hell girl. Tell it like it is. I'm not a fan of a red leaning sienna either. I used to use only W&N until Daniel Smith came out. Now I'm a daniel smith user. I only use W&N when I can get them for free. Which happens from time to time when you can find a sale that also allows for in store coupons. I'd like to try M.Graham eventually.

You'd love M Graham watercolor . They aren't as well known or hyped as some other brands but they are made in small batches with the highest concentration of pigment I have ever experienced. I'm gonna do a review soon but it's so easy to get rich saturated darks that are nearly impossible with winsor newton's. ( I don't use black paint , I mix my own chromatic black and darks )
