I've never been a fan of Cotman, though I know some people really love them a lot. I have a small palette of the professional half pans, and one pro tube of Potter's Pink, but otherwise this is a brand which I haven't managed to collect many of, mainly due to their high price here. Both paintings are really pretty!

Thank you. I might be a bit biased as I started using the Cotman first and then expanded to other brands. They aren’t bad to use and are fairly cheap here in Canada. I think there is pros and cons for both, but I’m happy to be able to use the professional ones more 😃

This was a very informative comparison! I always noticed the cotmans are not the most pigmented, but I still managed to do okay with them for a while even though I paint with a light hand. You’re great at watercolor! I love how both of them turned out😊

Thank you! Yeah the Cotman paints have more fillers which can make some of the colors just a bit chalky. But I’m glad I got the professional ones too 😄

Glad it was helpful! I don't know why the Cotman paints don't get more praise. They are great quality paints. You can always replace a color here and there for a more professional one if you ever want to.

This is so helpful-I'm just getting started with watercolor painting and I have mostly Cotman paints at the moment, but I have noticed that some of them don't look as impressive as I had hoped. It's great to see some of them side by side-the professional greens & blues in particular look so much better than the Cotman. Thanks!

You are so welcome! I started with my Cotman paints and still like them. Most are still lightfast, the only difference really is less pigment, but you can always do more layers on top once you let it dry. I have done a few watercolor tutorials you can follow along if your interested, just use your closest color in you set. Also I would look for sales at art stores or Michaels, sometimes their paints go on sale so I would pick up a few tubes of professional colors you want and slowly build like that to add to your cotman colors. Thanks for watching.

Also last year I started this channel doing a Christmas card series with my Cotman paints and strathmore cards (not cotton) so those videos might be great to follow if you don't have 100% cotton paper, as that's what I use now and the paints certainly work better on that paper.

Thank you very much for this video!! I found it super useful. In just under a month I will attend my first watercolor course, and my teacher provided me with a rather extensive list of materials. She wanted us to buy W&N tube colors, and I asked if it was ok to use Cotman. She said that I could if I wanted to, but highlighted what you just did, that it was less pigmented. But as I’m just a beginner, and will do a lot of practicing just to train my muscle memory, I think that using professional grade paint is very unnecessary, since I don’t even know yet if I will love this. I hope I will, because I see so many beautiful things made with watercolor, and it looks like a relaxing thing to do 😊 I have already bought a few Cotman colors, but after watching your video, I am sure it was the right way to go for me. I can upgrade later if I find that I like to do this ❤️

@@NaomiCoutureArt Thanks for your reply 😊 I have started to watch your beginner series now, and I have received my first watercolors as well ❤️ So I have started practicing a few strokes. I just wanted to say also that I appreciated that you explained about the color number content in the different tubes. I have watched a lot of videos about watercolor here on KZread, and I can’t remember anyone having mentioned that before. At least not explaining about it. I guess it can be used as a reference to what colors go together when blending and make other colors, what colors will just dull each other down? Again thanks for a lot of useful information 😊

iv been eyeing cotmann as next step up as I am not ready to invest in the expensive super high quality and i’m learning techniques and skills and don’t want to use expensive stuff until i am better. I have been eyeing the mission gold brand as well. j don’t have 100% cotton but i did just get a paul Rubin 50% cotton one. I have watched many reviews on the beat paper and paints.

I still like the Cotman paints, they are really good so not a waste of money. As you use them up you have the option to purchase other brands to replace them. I recently got the Paul Rubens 50% block and it’s actually pretty good! So not bad paper either.

I think people miss the point of Cotman. These are really high-quality paints for amateur artists. I read somewhere that J. M.W. Turner, one of the greatest of all watercolourists, never had any paints at his disposal that were of quality equal to today’s Cotmans-and that was from an art historian, not a W & N employee.
