🔹 The London System: Essential Theory, TRAPS to Win Fast - • The London System: Ess...
In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shows you a winning chess opening for White against the King's Indian Defense or the Pirc Defense setup where Black fianchettoes the kingside bishop, playing g6 and Bg7. More specifically, you will learn how to play the London System against the King's Indian Defense setup after the opening moves: 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bf4 g6.
One of the main advantages of Black playing the King's Indian Defense setup is that they have a strong control over the e5 square with the support of their d6-pawn and the bishop on g7. In fact, it almost takes over the control of the e5-square from White when they Black pushes their pawn to e5 themselves. This gives Black a rock-solid position against White's London System.
But this opening variation will give you an easy and powerful attack on the kingside. Best of all, Black's most played and natural moves are losing (Black gets a losing position in just 5 moves) and it works even against stronger opponents. Moreover, this setup also works with 1.e4 when Black plays the Pirc Defense with 1...d6 and fianchetto their kiingside bishop.

4:38 this is not true actually. black can move bishop to capture pawn on e5. if white uses the bishop on h6 to take the rook on f8, then black moves bishop from e5 to f4 winning whites queen....you absolutely have to mention such a strong counter to be aware of

Consider finding the move to simply be a challenge for the reader :) So, Bxe5. You want to take the rook, but you can't because the bishop wins the queen. Why can't the queen just take the bishop? Because the Knight is supporting it. Simple, in response to Bxe5, play g4 to chase off the knight. After Nhf6, you can safely take the rook. Black can try Ng7, but it's basically gg if black undevelops his knight like that. Just pawn storm and blow up the kingside. Remember, against the KID, your h pawn is exactly 2 moves away from cracking the king open like an egg. There are gonna be 50 different variations and ways black can try to defend, it's impossible to explain each and every one. But, the goal is h4 / h5 / f4 in some order, move your pieces towards the enemy king, and make sure to keep queens on the board. After 9... Bxe5 10. g4, it should be easily winning for white. I hope that helps! ~ Video should help facilitate those ideas. If you're sitting in a game thinking, "Darn, the knight holds his bishop on f4, skewering my queen. This is a bad situation", consider 4:47. Or, if you're sitting thinking, "The Knight is passive and pinned on g7. How do I abuse that?", consider 3:11 For reference, after 9... Bxe5, there are only 102 games in the lichess database with that position. And I imagine it was still ~100 when this video game out, so Bxe5 is a position that's basically never been played since this video came out. So, I wouldn't fault a 13min video, or say "you absolutely have to mention XYZ", for a position that's been played basically 0 times since the video came out. Either way, you're gonna have to analyze it yourself when the time comes to play the position.

Great video! I appreciate you showing the ideas and not just the moves. Stockfish is good at recommending moves but horrible about giving ideas. One thing I find is that black plays d5 a lot against 3. Nc3. I see that that weakens the e5 square and makes Black's e5 push difficult, but I'd still enjoy a video on this line.

Great video. One issue I find with Bf4 though is that it can't be transposed into from the Modern (1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 d6) without giving up objective evaluation (4. Bf4 isn't in the top 10 in s16, and transpositions from moves like f3 don't work). I prefer to be able to transpose into the same setup against both the Pirc and Modern as it means less theory for me to learn and memorize.

After 6. O-O-O, what's to stop Black from playing 6. ... Bh8 or 6. Re8? Either move would seem to render Bh6 ineffective, since Black can avoid exchanging off the bishop. White can avoid this, though, by playing 6. Bh6 immediately, so why not do that? Same goes for a lot of similar positions arising from various openings (not only the KID and Pirc/Modern but also the Sicilian).

The position at 4:56 doesn't look scary at all tbh. White has a pawn hanging on e5. Black should move pawn b6, to prepare fianchetto of the other bishop. Let white trade the g7 bishop and safely recapture with the king. Then black bishop to b7. The queen is no longer hanging (because its defended by both rooks) so you pick up the hanging pawn with your knight, and you threaten devastation on h1 if white is silly enough to push the g pawn. All of those are natural moves and not obscure to find. What am I missing here?

Of course, it is rather silly to make moves without taking into consideration what your opponent is doing. So Black should get into trouble. But Bh6 seems to be too brave. Rook is cheaper than Queen, so B:e5 is possible (B:f8 - Bf4). Of course, even after loosing the central pawn White has good chances for attack, but Black has compensation

  • @yzfool6639

Sound attack beat defense at all but the highest levels. Unsound attacks often win against players under 2500. Black has no "compensation" other than a higher rating for positions where only one side is attacking. The low-rated defender will hardly beat you with positional moves or endgame technique anyway, especially when both players are amateurs.

I know I am necroing a year old comment but why not just go d5 as soon as you see white go Nc3? He doesn't address what to do in this video if black plays that he just says "people don't play that". Full disclosure I am not 18-1900 so if you have genuine advice for how white can continue this attack after that move I would love to know. It looks like that move just forces white to continue with the normal London setup.

Just play 5. c6 instead of 5. O-O which is inaccuracy. Then you try to launch queenside attack. I remember I won a game with black pieces when somebody tried this setup in the video against me.

Bullet and blitz games shouldn't be part of statistics. Just my opinion.

Grandmaster Smirnov confuses the King's Indian Defence with the Pirc Defence?! Let me explain to him that the King's Indian Defence can only arise if White plays c2-c4 :-)
