Winnebago's Roof Failure is Complete

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is the final video on the 2014 Itasca Suncruiser roof replacement. I attempted to skip past a lot of the more tedious and well seen sections and include some o the more interesting proceedures. Yes, the roof is not flawless, but it is stable and strong and not collasping down below. Like I said in the beginning, this should have had a new roof from Winnebago but the owner did not have a year to wait.

    Oh, say it ain’t so! My friend retired from Winnebago in Iowa. Swore they were the best made and manufactured RV’s in the country! Of course, growing up in MN, everyone bought Winnebago’s. They were in driveways all over town and wall to wall at the lakes, long term camping. When you were older and retired, you bought a BIG Winnebago and every Winter, drove to AZ or TX and stayed till Spring. You would think FL, but no. I would rather take a bullet than go to any of those places! Well, to each his own. But go to MN or IA and that’s all you see up there. PS. Beautiful job on the roof!! 🎉

    Thanks for showing the install on the wood to the foam. Last video stated you were not. My only suggestion is as a older fiberglass and wood boat project guy I would have treated the new wood with penetrating epoxy resin. Encapsulates the wood so it won’t absorb water. Also vastly increases the strength of the wood. Then glue the new filon on top of the water proof wood panels.

  • @AZExpert

    @AZExpert

    They probably would not stick, also not sure of the durability of that resin next to styrofoam. Generally we stick with materials that were designed for RV application, Marine application is a whole other ball of wax. Thanks for watching!

    @@AZExpert fyi, yes boats have to take more of a beating and seem to last much longer than your RV examples. But, yes of course, sure epoxy resin sticks to foam. All boats are full of foam, so they are hard to sink even if flooded, usually under the floor which in older fiberglass /wood boats was glass over plywood. Replacing a floor or transom is a lot like replacing an RV wood roof. When you tear off de-laminated rotten wood the foam usually is stuck to it some of it. Modern boats since mid 1990s use all composite materials with fiberglass and with your glue it would stick like glue. I am speaking about non-waxed epoxy resins. I restore my RV thinking like its a boat, they are so similar and using penetrating epoxy resin on new wood is the way to go. Ask the experts: lots of yt boat restore folks, Jamestown distributors, aero-marine resins, west marine, etc. have staff that can tell what will stick if you do not believe me. my 2 cents

    Interesting method of handling the job. You must pay Cassones RV for use of the shop and help with your repair job? I did the same thing as a mobile mechanic in the late 1980s and 90s.. A friend had a small brick & mortar auto repair shop in Glendale AZ. If I had a job that required "in shop" repair I would trailer the vehicle to him. Usually pay him for most or all of the repair. I had time for other jobs and made money on all jobs (usually). I had less overhead costs & helped my buddy pay his bills ... thanks.

    I am NOT a rv expert. Just a guy that owned a winnebago and watched some of these vids. The winni roof imo is one of the better ones on gasser motorhomes. Can you do filan on a originally flexible roof?…. Good q but - I don’t think so. You can’t just fastener it down on edges as i think it would break and crack. Winni have that rounded top edge a-bunting to that channel the filan gets bent and tucked into then held with the pro flex culk/glue or whatever. A edm or tpo roof has no spot to tuck the filan nor the bigger radius i believe - at least the ones I have seen.

    I will never buy a Winnebago… I would be so worried about hitting a bump with all the units on the roof and have it caving in…. But then again that’s probably why they didn’t put the AC on the roof it can’t support it

    I always see you use wood for the base, can you use an azdale composite material, May be over kill, and too expensive

    Amazing job. I still can't believe there are no cross supports tying the roof to the walls. Makes no sense from a construction standpoint. I just completed rebuilding my basement box due to poor design by Winnebago if anyone wants to watch.
