    Jumping off a cliff with no chute is the least dangerous option; Death is certain. Jumping off a cliff with a chute is the second least dangerous; Dying once is preferable, and having lived life fully is rare, even exceptional. Gluing your ass to a chair for life is the most dangerous endeavor mankind has ever known; Many of us die daily, hourly, perhaps you're even dying a little right now... Who would have thought sitting in a chair could be humanity's deadliest "adventure"? (obesity, sedation, depression, social anxiety, lack of sex drive, addiction, terror, lack of purpose....) and gnawing existential crisis with low levels of dissassociation, delusion, and -insanity intensif- "oh sweet, my Ubereats arrived! and look at this funny cat video..." Do u realize that you can live fully without putting your life at danger unecesarily like that? There are tons of things to do that are exciting and safe. But no , some people need adrenaline , I am not sorry for them if they die or left horribly injured , I am sorry for their friends and family who are left shattered and in pain for such morons. But to each it's own I guess , some people never learn from other people mistakes.

    I'm not disputing your point. Via online articles, I've seen estimates of 1 in 500 jumps to 1 in 2,300 jumps result in death for base jumpers. I could only find one article that would put a percentage or ratio of cave scuba dives resulting in death, that was 1 in 3,300 dives. I only accepted estimates from articles, not peoples comments. It's worthy to note, I found an article state not every base jump death gets reported as such. Likewise, I found an article state not all scuba dive deaths get reported as such. However, I was left with the overall impression that a higher percentage of cave scuba dive deaths don't get reported in comparison to base jumper deaths not getting reported.

    @@mikeef747 LOL! Not even close to comparable. There's a huge difference between what those pioneer test pilots did & what base jumping wingsuiters do in proximity flights. The test pilots weren't doing what they were doing, just to get a adrenaline rush from intentionally trying to narrowly escape death every jump and flight close to terrain as possible... such as is the intent of suicidal wingsuiters. The pioneers/test pilots actually achieved something useful to the entire human race, called flying. A whole new & highly useful mode of transportation. The wingsuiters achievement... the creation of a useless & extremely dangerous sport, solely used for the enjoyment of those relatively few who use them. A sport that has cost hundreds of lives (400+). A sport enjoyed by less than 99.99& of the human race. What usefulness has improved wingsuits brought to the human race??? No, these base jumping proximity flyers such as in this video are NOT courageous & are NOT doing it for a greater cause... they are just suicidal adreline junkies who do it for the thrill & popularity. All they bring is great sadness to their family & friends after their pointless deaths.

  • @_MjG_

    That death total doesn't really paint the whole picture though. I looked up all base jump fatalities, which happens to go back to 1981. From then to this date, it's 470 deaths exactly. The list doesn't specify if any of those fatalities include non winged suits/parachutes, but it clear via the menu filter that all winged suit base jump deaths are on the list. Here's where I'm going with this. Of those 470 deaths, 246 of them occurred in this current 10 year span, 2014 to end of this year, which is by far the most deaths over any 10 year period. As well as 340 deaths in this current 15 year span vs 130 deaths over the previous 28 years. There is a 2.05 deaths per month average via base jumps this current 10 year span.

    Sadly, this reminds me of that Magnum,P.I. episode wherein the Hemingwayesque author is diagnosed with a terminal illness, straps himself into a hang-glider and jumps off the point at Molokai into the sunset, at the end of the episode. To everyone saying “at least he survived,” think about how remote the arena was, and that if his GPS tracker was damaged on impact, finding him (much less getting to him) was going to be an extremely arduous task.

    Is it really a pure wing suit incident ? My point is that he is twisting when opening the parachute, the same issue could have happened in base-jump, or regular jump am I wrong ? The only difference with a regular parachute jump is probably ground proximity, not allowing him to cut off and use his reserve (do you have a reserve in wing suit?).

  • @alexialang8656

    @alexialang8656

    As noone more qualified answered your question, I will : as far as I know you have a reserve when jumping from a plane, you don't have one when base jumping, regardless if you are equiped with a wingsuit or not. You are right when assuming that you have time to cut off and use a reserve when jumping from a plane, and not when base jumping. I could also add, (on the control of the community) that getting some twists when jumping from a plane is generally not an issue : you have plenty of time to manage them and put your parachute in the proper configuration without using your reserve. That said, I am not absolutely sure the issue in this video was just regular twists. Other comment let me think it could have been some parachute malfunction or tricky issue coming from the parachute packing. It would be nice if Gabriel Lot explained it to us, but it seems he ignore any comment in english and answer only to the one in spanish, so...

    The parachute looked too small. He wouldn't have been able to flair all that much even if it didn't twist. I guess the idea was to come in hot on the chute, flair and foot drag to a stop.

    I don’t do BASE or wing suit, but as a skydiver it looks to me like he didn’t have the altitude to slow down his forward movement before deploying. That may have induced the line twists. Certainly he didn’t have the altitude to be able to deal with the line twists. If you’re at 3000ft on a normal skydive you can normally just unwind them because you’ve got the time. Failing that, you can cutaway and use the reserve. When you deploy so close to the ground, you can’t do any of this. One of the things that makes BASE so much more dangerous.
