Wings of change: New Wing Designs for Electric Aviation

Ғылым және технология

In this video we are going to look at three new wing designs that can benefit Electric Aviation. These are the Fanwing, the X-Wing and the Truss Braced Wings.
The fanwing is significant because of its high lifting efficiency and USTOL feature

The advantage of the fan wing for agriculture is that once inverted, it can be used as a combine.

Talking about wing aspect, the "wing-grid" study used multiple wings at the wing tip: it increase the wing aspect, while the wing is smaller and also improve wing tip vortexes...

With aviation it's the same with biology: there is evolution. If a configuration would have made sense, it still would exist. When I studied aircraft engineering and build model planes, I understood why planes look the way they do. Because it makes the most sense. Easy to manufacturers, to calculate, maintain, ground handling etc. There are a whole bunch more factors to measure how good a design is then just fuel efficiency. Most of the time the other factors dominate. But I'm very interested to see other designs pop up. Especially with eVTOL.

The "flying flapjack" of WW2 era does the same thing as the fan wing but is much simpler and has high top speed. Thanks for bringing Macro fiber composite to my attention. It would be ideal for the idea of a "heart assist jacket" that would fit around a weakened heart and constantly give a heart assist/massage.

6:23 Too much to go wrong. And it won't work without the more complex changable aerofoil. But what about twin contra rotating rotors slowed to the rpm where the receding (backwards airflow) blades have the least impact and airspeed for those blades is slow.?. I reckon they could convert the Sikorski RAIDER to one of those, fairly easily. Just A certain slower rpm rotor option and some extra fancy software on its FBW rotor blade pitch control.

I winder if rtuss brace wing can be combine with cross flow fan, not fot the purpose of lift as this will slow down the plain , but as distributed trust. The inlet or outlet will need to be redirected by 90 degree so they are on the same refrence plain. The diameter will be much smaler to fit inside the wing.

I have a model magazine from the 1930s with a fan wing.... nothing new here. Its an extremely high drag wing and its heavy. Modern materials reduces the weight issue. Pou de' Ceil, also from the 1930s, proved tandem wings had efficiency improvements at a cost of certain control issues. Too fast with the tandem wing drives the nose down due to amplifying the rear wing lift. It can be impossible to pull out of the resulting dive.

I think that battery technology won't be lighter than hydrogen tanks and fuel cells in the near future, so I highly doubt that electrical planes by Boing or Airbus will come with batteries as the main energy source in the near future.

The market has not been disrupted. Classical design works and new technology has to be more specific than you state to be of use. Lifting body designs are being researched. Multi billion dollar industries working at the leading edge of technology have more to consider than simple model airplane designs. Mass air transportation has safety and reliability considerations that limit all other concerns in reality. Adoption isn't done at the flip of a coin.

These projects look like money burners. Ag planes need maneuverability and the open fan wing doesn't look like a good choice for that. Today in science it is hard to believe anyone's claims and the open fan wing just doesn't look very efficient.. We got away from struts to reduce drag and now somehow we are going to put them back on to reduce drag. You pointed out in another video that mounting props on the tips can effectively increase the aspect ratio. That idea is being utilized on at least two new electrics. Where do these people get the money?

  • @seansverige

Your opening argument fundamentally wrong: not only do you basically contradict yourself later on but two of the three wing concepts do not seem suitable for commercial passenger aviation. All three are only becoming relevant because of the actual reason limiting progress: technology Of course mainstream aviation design is convergent but commerce, R&D costs and technology have been more important than regulation. Personally I feel that advances computation, materials and electric power have combined to make today the most exciting and innovative time in aviation since the early war jet age Actual technical content very good, would have liked more detail about tandem fanwings. Also, CHAPTERS
