You make it look easy! This is one of the best foiling channels. I’m 9 months beginner but gybes are coming along nicely for me. Definitely agree riding switch is fun and good for the melon. And would also like another board build series!

Thank you, Chris 🙏🏽. Yes, you will keep going and get it! My one tip is hold on to the wing handles as long as possible while turning upwind. You should be able turn straight into the wind before you release your back hand from handle. At that point you are halfway done with the tack. Just flip your top hand over your head and perform a quick hand switch and done! Cheers Chris go get it 💪🏽

Hey Lance! Thanks for putting out a great video! Super positive and motivating. I have been working on my wing foiling and getting up switch foot (only taxiing at this point). I'm putting in the time as much as I can, I know I will get there. But I always recall your advice "Gotta put in the reps" and I use that as motivation. Btw, I met Trevor last week in Surfside, who said he met you last week. lol 🤙🤙

Thanks so much Mr. Style! I have now been foiling for 9 years now this march. Crazy! I don’t remember what I said about my Light wind comments in this video. But as far as beginners in wind conditions- i would suggest going out in stronger winds when learning. Light winds make it harder to get up on foil. Technically you have to be perfect and efficient with the wing and your body mechanics. And its more of an exercise in light winds. If. Light winds is all you have. Then you will have to make due. In light wind put on a bigger foil and pump up a bigger wing. I can get up on foil and have a good time in 10-12 mph of wind using my 7’6 sup board and big wing and foil wing. If the wind is very strong. Say over 25-30mph then that can be challenging also. I wouldn’t tell a beginner to go out and learn to wing in 10-12mph. 15-25 mph is ideal in my opinion

Cheers, mate! Stoked to inspire you some. Knowing how to windsurf is going to help you get winging alot faster with all that sailing knowledge. Winging way less physically taxing on the body. Dont need as much wind either. Or gear.

@@Lanceisoutside Yes its almost like grinding the foil! Excellent timing on your videos, working on tacks now also. You ever try any foil skids or 360s yet? When we were in town in April and the wind left for a couple days prone video we learned a lot. Great spot -see you there next visit, love those bay waves CC forecast this week looks so solid

Keep at the tacks and give the behind the back a go! Get alot of speed toeside. Then depower and immediately get low and turn upwind.

Thanks Rob 🤙🏽. I am by the gulf coast of Texas in this video. This is a bay im riding in! Ocean is about 15 air miles upwind. There are some kiteboarding and windsurfing spots a few miles up and down the shoreline from me. This place is foil heaven.

Good afternoon Lance! I am designing a new board, really similar to yours, and I m thinking about advancing the us boxes quite a bit, in theory this will distribute the weight between forward and aft so even if I build a 6feet board I should have similar feeling than a 4’5’’ because of the weight distribution. The idea is to ride with my back foot above the mast or even a little bit further to the aft (that would be perfect). What are your thoughts on having the us boxes advanced. More or less the mast center is going to be 24’’ from the aft. Since I saw you playing with downwind and sup foil boards what is your opinion on this idea? Thank you for your support and encouragement! In regards to your question, I think it depends on what Foil you have and what you find aesthetically pleasing to yourself. I have noticed some Foil brands like the foil farther foward on the board. And some prefer to be farther aft. Everyone has their own personal preferences. In my opinion i think for a 6 ft board. That 24 inches may be too far foward. I may be wrong. But i dont know what you ride or board design you like. Im making a new board right now. Just glued the foam pieces together. It’s going to be a longer version of the board in this video. 6’0x19x6inches. Another Prone board / wing board in one. Not sure yet where i will place my boxes.

Great video, Lance. Excellent thoughts and maneuvers. Have one question for you: how do you calibrate your soloshot3 so nicely? I keep having a ton of difficulty with mine, and can hardly get it to track me for more than 7 seconds. Any tips or advice on this? Thanks a lot, Dmitri

I’ve had my struggles and it took me alot of trial and error. But i think I finally figured out how to properly calibrate the soloshot at a high success rate. I’ll do my best to keep it simple 1. Set up camera where you will be recording. Turn camera on with the tracker detached from it about 5-10 yards away. (Keep tracker turned off) 2. Leave soloshot on for about 5 minutes. Now go to the tracker and turn it on. Set it back down where it was for 3-4 minutes. 3. Now take the tracker. Go to the soloshot and select the calibrate option. The moment the soloshot begins to start rotating, be ready to click the tracker back onto the soloshot. ( it goes 3,2,1 then starts rotating) 4. Allow about 2-3 minutes for soloshot to perform the calibration. Once it says calibration completed. The camera should point to where you had the tracker resting while you were letting the soloshot warm up. 5. Next unclip the tag and go about 20 yds away. And walk back and forth a few repetitions sided to side getting the camera to follow and get you centered in the frame. Sometimes it starts out a little bit off. But as time goes on during your session, it gets a better track on you more centered. Please let me know if you read this and if you have success with your future track. I know the frustration of not having it work!

I’m going to try your process step by step and will report back. I actually just came back home from a wing foil session at my local spot, and had the soloshot3 tracking…will see how bad it came out today.. haha! Your detailed process makes a lot more sense to me. And I’ve noticed that you have your soloshot on lock in your videos.. and it looks really good. I’ve actually reached out to soloshot many times recently… and they never get back to me. Great idea for a product, but absolutely horrible customer service from them. Thanks again for your tips… and the inspiration as well. With appreciation, Dmitri

You’re very welcome, Dmitri! Glad to help with that. Hope it works well. I also put on a windblock barrel over my soloshot when i filming in wind. Because the footage will be all shaky and not acceptable to my standards. Its name is “sputnik” and looks like a combination of the rocket and r2d2. Its a plastic trashcan with 3 bamboo pieces attached to it. I’ll place it over the soloshot and secure it from blowing away with drybags filled with sand. Attached to some cordage that connects to sputnik’s legs. I have about an 18 inch by 5 inch strip/viewing port cut out of the trashcan for the soloshot to see me.

Where did you launch? I have been learning to wingfoil in Portland in sunset lake. I've been looking for other spots to ride.

On many of the tacks you are actively pushing the leading edge of the wing over to the other side. Can you elaborate on that little "trick".....

@kshred3043 Yes. This video was filmed not long after I learned Tacks. So i was still learning to do them properly. I was having to push the leading edge of the wing to the other side because if I didn’t on some of the tacks, the wing would still be pointing in the direction i was just traveling. I didn’t understand why i had to do that alot. But recently i figured out why and solved that problem. Problem was i was letting go of the wing with my back hand way too soon. I learned you can complete half of the tack by holding on to the wing longer and using it to make most of the turn. At that point. The wing is pointing the “correct” way and you dont have to use other hand to push leading edge over to other side. I hope this all makes sense. I will make another video on tacks hopefully soon. I have some good drone footage i will be working on soon of some local wingers who are very dialed in on tacks. It demonstrates very well what i just discussed in this tacky comment.

@@Lanceisoutside hope you do put out tack video! I'm coming up on a year winging in May, have jibes and foot switches down. Finally decided to start working on tacks, tried for first time ever last time out. Attempted about 5 or 6... came around grabbed wing on 2 but came off foil.. felt pretty ugly. Seems like my timing is off or something, but need heaps more reps, hopefully on a day where I can use a wing smaller than the big 5.0 I was using. I think your comment about holding onto back handle longer may help- have to give that a go.

Keep practicing and you will definitely get it soon. My favorite is tacking in medium winds. Your 5m wing should be fine.
