I was one of the original group in the 1980s when we trained in the garage. This was before the school. I touched hands with my Sifu and my Sigong. They are truely related in martial arts. There is a touch like no other. If anyone says different, they just don't know. Honored to have been trained, hit, slapped, and have the reaction that has stayed with me for years. Anyone who talks bad about my sifu Meadows, or sigong Duncan, I'll show you what a 55 year old with 6 years of training can do 30 years after his last instruction.

The "bitch slaps" you refer to happen quite often. Its a great incentive to learn how to do the moves correctly and develop speed. He never intentionally tries to injure. Just a little pop once in a while to keep you focused. In a real fight your opponent is not going to go at half speed or pull punches. Dave teaches you to know a range and all the students understand this range and train at full speed. Learning a proper pak sao is very painful at first, but rewarding later on.

I trained under Sifu Dave Meadows for a while. My only regret is that I didn't train with him longer! He was a great teacher. And yes he would slap you to keep you on your toes and also an occasional swift kick in the family jewels to make sure you didn't forget your cup! LOL! And all I saw who challenged him could not tell you which hand he hit you with first or how many times he hit you. He was the real deal!

Sifu Meadows is one of the kindest and most genuine men I have ever met. I trained at the school for about 18 months more than 15 years ago but I had no real talent for the art. I am grateful however for the time I spent there.

Duncan Leung is the real thing. A closed-door student of his taught me freely as a young boy [and Wing Chun allowed me to save my baby brother's life from a gang armed with clubs as well as disarm 2 knife attacks in closed quarters among many other assaults]. If I had learned any other art I would be dead. Don't be discouraged! Most are taught "backward". I think you should give it another try and look inward. Don't chase it; let it come to you. Your obvious humility is a virtue which leads to wisdom. If anything, Wing Chun is the Way of Wisdom; and it resists the proud. Tip: Empty movement is meaningless. We must use intention. Our movement should result from intention and mindfully directed energy. Otherwise we merely pantomime. Siu Nim Tao does not teach applications; it merely ponders the "tools" we possess, giving us "letters" of the alphabet but not yet words and not yet "expression". Too many use a hammer on a screw. We MUST understand our tools before we can "build". Meadows appears very skilled. Wing Chun rewards humility. It runs counter to most arts. Most teach "more force". Wing Chun is NOT a movement-based art; it is an energy-based art. Energy over movement; focus over force. Minimize movement & maximize effect. Consider the lines [elbows to palms & knees to feet]. Technique is not responsive. Understanding line & energy is the key to unlocking the system. God bless. I do hope you continue your Wing Chun journey!

Man, what a find on here. I had a the privilege of training with Dave around 1995-1996 when I was stationed at Naval Operations Base in Norfolk, VA just up the street from that facility. I was the type of kid that didn't listen to anyone, but I listened to him. He is so intense and knowledgeable about WC yet, has a ton of charisma and could have had a career as an entertainer if he wasn't such a bad ass at WC. I remember having to punch those X-ray sheets you see in the video for speed.

I was a student of his off and on for about 6 years and I can honestly say Sifu Dave Meadows is an amazing example of what Wing Chun really is. He is incredibly fast, sharp, and heavy handed. Unlike many other teachers out there he really knows his shit and can dissect every single little movement and teach it in a way that is easy to understand. It has been said that he is arguably one of the best teachers in the country and I would definitely have to agree…

The rolling method is over 400 years old method of developing sensitivity to your another's hand movement and intent. This training allows you block by feel instead of by sight in close quarters, because "the hand is quicker than the eye." It's not practiced because it is liked or disliked but for it's effectiveness.

When I said "not exactly textbook form," I did not mean that the forms themselves were out of sequence. I meant that Meadows Sifu was not rigidly adhering to a defined position, but instead was adapting his movements appropriately to the situation. Also, I have never heard that Meadows Sifu learned directly from Ip Man. He learned from Duncan Leung, who was a closed-door student of Ip Man. Ip Man died in 1972, shortly before Meadows Sifu began training in Wing Chun.

That's cool. Wish there were some of that lineage up here in Washington State. Spokane to be exact, but there is too much BJJ and TKD in this area as well as standard boxing. I enrolled in one school that claimed to be a particular style of kung fu and the instructor got offended when I hit him with a hard pak sao as if I was just supposed to go through the motions at a slow speed. On top of that he kept trying to sell me books every 15 minutes. Sure miss the no-nonsense style of Dave...

They maybe like what you say "walking Death" during training, but off training, they are just like anyone else.

  • @quanfa88

Superior. Serious, no-nonsense training with much application emphasis. Excellent attention to detail. Not exactly textbook form, but that is probably a good thing (structure not strictly defined according to arranged sets). While he did (for lack of a more polite term) "bitch slap" his student during chi sao, this is part of Wing Chun/Southern Chinese martial arts training. It stings and gives a feel for fighting, but does no permanent damage (unlike the blows received in boxing, etc.).

First off just to say I am a practitioner of WC so I am not anti WC but I do see allot of vids like this and in some ways they are fine but I do hope people realize that none of these situations would ever actually work out in this way which is why often times I think that this kind of training/demo is pointless because a real fight is nothing like it. I believe in WC and its methods and principles but sometimes I see a rigidness that I just dont think would work against a trained fighter

@ Mefeld18. It may seem like sucker punching but, if you have ever trained with him for, lets say a year, you will understand how you are supposed to learn your range. You can't learn by pulling punches. His full contact methods are awesome at developing your reflexes. If you stick with it you will eventually discover that you react with the tools you have learned without thinking. Seriously. Anything that makes a movement toward my face is greeted with a bong sao lop sao or a tan sao point shoulder reaction. That includes doors, people trying to play fight with me, objects thrown, you name it. It really works out if you have the discipline to take it seriously. If you want to go a safer route just find some school that takes your money and tells you to do a sidekick on a bag for a half hour.

  • @Jericho11894

....I'm sorry but how does that relate? I can understand that can be compared as practicing a martial art but never using it. But how does that rhetorical question compare to his slapping method? Anyway, just wondering.

  • @quanfa88
    @quanfa8812 жыл бұрын

Well, it was quite a slap, but it was of course not nearly as hard as being hit by a baseball. To answer your question, it depends upon your priorities. If you care about developing your potential to the maximum, there is no getting around contact in the martial arts. However, please realize, this pales in comparison to blows received in boxing, kickboxing, or MMA sparring.

  • @johnnychannarong5484

i dont trust that move all the time.. first of all in theory it works well.. but the punches come out so fast that it may be a hook or a straight.. both may look the same once the punch starts to load.. so if you think its a straight punch , then you parry it.. only NO it was a hook.. then you end up getting hit in the face by a super big hook. thats why boxers USUALLY never parry the right hand.. only the left.. wing chun works great against untrained drunks.. not against mma/muay thai fighters used to fighting!

In reading the comments below there are a few points that need to be made. 1) In WC when you play the aggressor you get the power you put into the attack returned in exactly the same power you apply. If you think the aggressors look like they are just going through the motions trust me they are not. They are applying just enough effort and power to complete the attack without getting themselves hurt by their own force. Ask me how I know! 2) Complaining about getting slapped during training is like a boxer complaining that their sparing partner hit them! Sifu Meadows has always stressed that being contacted (this my mean slapped) during training teaches your body not to shut down at the first incident of pain. There was a vey publicized case in the Norfolk area where a Mid-20s woman who was a second degree black belt was beaten to death by a mugger. I remember her parents asking why it happened when she had been taking Karate for 15 years. Witnesses testified she shut down after the first punch. She never experienced any real contact during training. 3) DM and his students enjoy making real contact when demonstrating WC to others like the press or organizations. It's fun. I remember asking a question in class about why the opponent would not just hit him in the stomach while he was demonstrating a sequence. He called me up to the middle of the class, asked me to put my fist one inch from his stomach and told me to hit him as hard as I could the moment he touched me. He hit me with no more force than a person would use to clap and his tap made my brain go blank for a split second. Couldn't see or react in any way. No unnecessary force to demonstrate his point. I don't know of any person who has an issue with what he teaches just personal issues on how he trains. I know what he trains works. Ask me how I know that too.

that shows your're an idiot. any logical person would know that action is faster than reaction.. he knows how to fight i would say but he totally preyed on your stupidity.. first of all, if he tells you to put your fist near his stomach and wait for him to hit you first then you can hit him, obviously he's going to land his shot first.. and since you got no hand to block your face, that little slap would blind you so you wont be able to hit him back.. if i were there, i would have said this is not realistic.. cause he already knows you're going to hit him in the body .. if u guys were sparring, it would be totally different..

I know he means well by slapping a person to make them feel a sense of combat, but is it reall nescessary? I mean, no being rude but if you look at how a baseball bat hits a baseball to make it go flying, you can tell you do not want to get hit by a baseball bat because of the power behind the swing. Just wondering about his teaching method.

@@stevenmccartney I'll expound on that. Steve Falkner learned the whole system from Duncan Leung. He is Duncan's formal disciple. Dave Meadows did not learn the whole system, and Dave is not a formal disciple of Duncan.

Kcseales I thought Dave was a disciple also but no longer is due to a following out of some sort? Or maybe he never was at all? Also the original comment of this thread implies it was the other way around, that Dave Meadows learned more than Steve Faulkner. Ultimately it sounds mostly political. Thoughts?

@@WingChunGungFu Dave was never a formal disciple of Duncan. He never had the formal disciple ritual. This means he was never shown everything. And he definitely did not learn more than Steve Falkner. There definitely was a falling out, but that specifically doesn't have to do with him claiming Dave as a disciple or not. He just simply never was.
