Wine Review: Domaine Paul Jaboulet (de la Chapelle) Hermitage La Chapelle 2005

Domaine de la Chapelle is the new, distinct estate identity for the famous Hermitage red wine of that name and its white counterpart Le Chevalier de Sterimberg. Both were formerly labelled as part of the Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné portfolio. The change is intended to recognize the work done by new proprietor Caroline Frey since her arrival in 2006, giving a clearer indication of excellence. Accordingly, a new dedicated winery is under construction as of 2023. The wines are now to be released to the market via the Place de Bordeaux to brokerage markets.
There are 26 hectares (64 acres) of vineyard; the Jaboulet family have owned vines on the Hermitage slopes for over a century and have owned the Chapelle since 1919. The conversion to organic farming began soon after Frey took the reins, with certification achieved in 2016. The vines have been biodynamically farmed since 2018.
Hermitage La Chapelle (Rouge) is made from Syrah from the most stony sections of the Méal, Bessard, Rocoules and Greffieux parcels. Vines are between 40 and 100 years old. The wine is prized for its silkiness, dark fruit characters and tight tannic structure. It is capable of ageing gracefully over many decades.
Chevalier de Sterimberg Hermitage Blanc is a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne (though the 2021 was 100% Marsanne grown on loess and pebble soils, particularly the Murets Plateaux and Maison Blanche plots. The Roussanne does best on clay-limestone areas. Henri-Gaspard de Stérimberg was knight who, in 1225, having returned from the crusades, saught serenity by living as a hermit in the chapel on the the hill. He probably grew Syrah grapes there. From him the hillside takes its name.

Glad you enjoyed the review. Frustratingly I am wearing a mic and have used software to enhance the volume. obviously I still have a way to go for the perfect solution.
