Wine Review: Ata Rangi, Martinborough Pinot Noir 2019
David Allen, Master of Wine tastes Ata Rangi's 2019 Pinot Noir from Martinborough, New Zealand, in commemoration of International Pinot Noir Day on Thursday 18th August 2022.
Ata Rangi is a leading estate in the Martinborough region in the south of New Zealand's North Island. It is particularly known for its intense, complex Pinot Noir, which is widely considered to be among the very best from the country.
At the core of the Pinot Noir plantings is the Abel, or Gumboot clone, propagated from a cutting said to have been taken from the Romanée-Conti vineyard in Burgundy. It was smuggled into the country in a gumboot, and confiscated at the border in the 1970s by Malcolm Able.

Thanks for the enthusiastic response - we have been here for a bit, but are taking it a bit more seriously - glad if you like what we are doing!
In my opinion, the best expression of Pinot Noir in New Zealand and the thirsty surrounds. You are so spot on with your comments on the immediate temptation of the wine while promising future pleasure as a reward for the patient collector. Cheers!
