Excellent video. I watch both yours and John's (and Konstantin Baum). I have been interested in wine since my early 20s - more than 45 years ago. I don't come from a wine-drinking family: working class men from the north of England drank beer. Jancis Robinson's first book, 'Wine,' got me into the subject - I think she was still at Oxford when it was published. I ran my own wine tasting club for many years and so I know my own palate pretty well; mainly old world but with some exceptions. I am still open to new experiences, though. I have a total collection of about 700 bottles, half in the merchant's cellars and half at home, mostly in a large temperature controlled cabinet. There are some gaps I would like to address, such as Chianti Classico and vintage Champagne, but I have most other bases covered. A couple of other things, if I may. I too enjoy fairly young Ch9duP but my '12s are drinking beautifully too right now - just a different experience. Concerning the future, '20 was my last year for laying down reds - but haven't we been blessed, particularly in Europe, for the last dozen years or so? Luckily, I have plenty of fruit forward Bordeaux '14s to enjoy (cellar defenders) while awaiting the 15, 16s, 18s 19s and 20s. We will be having some wine-loving friends over to stay soon, so I have picked a '13 Cote Rotie as one of the wines - the first from a half-case: I will keep the '10s back for a year or two. Sorry about the length of this comment. Keep up the good work, you are doing a grand job.

No need to be sorry, thank you so so much for sharing your story. Very interesting points here, esp that 20 is the last day for laying down reds. I’m sure you have some great stuff and can remember the days when almost anyone could afford some of these iconic wines. Which producer of Cote Rotie?? I’m jealous as I don’t drink those wines nearly as often as I would like. I do like some aged CDP but I get disappointed with aged ones a lot. That being said I had a gorgeous one from the 60s a year ago. Stay tuned, you may or may not be seeing an appearance by Konstantin 😎 Also, I’m very happy to know your story now. Thanks for watching

@@drmatthewhorkey Thanks. The Cote Rotie I have chosen (it was a mixed half dozen) is Le Gallet Blanc (definitely red, despite its name) by Francois Villard - not a producer I am familiar with: do you know them? We will drink it on Tuesday, along with some fizz and a modest glass of Crusted Port. We will need to go easy because a couple of us have a pretty long trek in the Lakeland fells planned for the next day: an early start and a dozen miles or so on the Langdale peaks. '20 is the last realistic year for laying down decent reds: whites are a different matter. Mind you, my mum is still with us and living in her own home at 99, so perhaps I am being premature!

Yamas!
Thanks for great content, Matthew! My passion for wine started around 15 years ago with a bottle of CdP - and after that I've been on quite the exploratory journey; and I just made a full loop back around to where it all started. A couple of year ago I left Sweden and moved to France with my family (the best decision of my life) and built my first celler here a little over a year ago. Coming from a country with a pretty limiting monopoly to the heart of Languedoc where you pretty much stumble over vines wherever you go was indeed a huge change of scenery. Suddenly there was so much wine accessible everywhere and even if I dimensioned my celler to hold around 800-1000 bottles I have already collected over 500 bottles 😅 - around 75% French; mostly Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhone, Burgundy and Provence (due to me being an avid Clos Cibonne fan). I mainly buy stuff that I intend to drink with friends and family - and with three kids born during the 10's I have started to stock up on "their" vintages (mainly Champagne, Bordeaux, Sauternes and Port) with the intention to share these bottle with the kids when they come of age. But I do try to have quite the diversity as well both when it comes to grapes and styles as I love food (and to cook) so I really cherish to be able to grab a nice bottle of wine that will work with whatever I'm cooking at the moment. Like today when I grabbed a 2018 Domaine Santa Duc Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Saintes Vierges that went beautifully with a plate of pasta with Swedish meatballs and cream peppercorn sauce. Keep up the good work! And if you ever pass by the Corbieres region - don't be a stranger!

@@drmatthewhorkey Yeah, it really is! So much has happened here in the past 15 years and the generational shift is still happening. One get the impression that due to the region mainly did low quality bulk wine previously there’s not so much of an herretage that limits the creativity of young and upcoming producers. And there’s a lot of vineyards here that are converting to biodynamic and organic practices as well. One thing that I have experienced here though is that most of the quality reds drinks well upon release - but the quality whites tends to be pretty harsh and needs at least a year or two of cellaring before being approachable; some even more than that. I used to not like the style of whites they produce here but now I realise that I have just drunk a lot of them to young - and with some age they tend to be really delicious!
Great show and solid advice👍

You both hit the nail on the head with the time horizon concept. Starting this adventure at seventy means I have no interest in investing in wines that will peak when I may not be around. Besides, from my limited experience with aged wines, it seems just as much of a crap shoot as exploring young wines. I had a scrumptious Etna Rosso yesterday, 2019 vintage, better than any Sicilian wine I've had before. Thrill of the chase! Good video, by the way. I subscribe to both of your channels and find them both educational, but you do generate more excitement, Matthew. Cheers!

Another reason to buy earlier maturing wines is that they are lighter and go with lighter meals. Entry level wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone (both white and red), Beaujolais, Muscadet, NZ Sauv Blanc, Rieslings from the US, Europe or Australia, lighter wines from Tuscany or Southern Italy are just a few of many examples. You don't want a big bruiser every night (young or old)

Magnums are awesome!!!
@narrowistheway77
11 ай бұрын
I actually think Magnums age worse. They take longer to age the same amount as a standard bottle. So if you want to store for a really long time, then go magnum, but if you want a wine that has 10 years worth of aging in a magnum you only need about 7 years in a standard bottle for the exact same aging. So I guess it depends how crowded you prefer your cellar and how soon you prefer to drink your wine… another downside with magnums is they only make sense if you’re having 4+ people drinking together. For just a husband and wife drinking occasion like normal, a normal bottle just makes more sense
Hey Doc! I love old wines ! My best experiences by far are Barolo, Hermitage, and even some white from northern Italy ! One to consider is Quicelda Creek, from Washignton state , that is unbelievable value with age ! Cheers !

Space or buying things you didn’t like?
I think if you're collecting for investment purposes, its probably in your best interest to partner with a group like Cult Wines, or something similar. A partner can probably get you allocation in top wines better than you could individually and they also take care of storage. There's a fee of course, but I find its worth every penny. If you realize you want to drink one of your wines you can always just have the bottle shipped to you.

You're making it very hard for us. Sunday evening, tired of the weekend, and now i have to decide if I watch your video with John in it first, or watch John's with you in it 😂. Just kidding. Great concept of doing videos together. And interesting to get your view on John's recommendations. In my cellar I have about 120 bottles. No real expensive bottles, max 50€. But a good mix between bottles to age, some cheaper every day wines and a lot of things in between. On the 3, 6 or 12 bottles at a time: I'm usually going for 2 or 3. There's way to much unknown stuff to explore, so why would I drink the same one 6 times. Okay, one exception perhaps, on trips to wineries I make an exception and go for cases of 6.

@@drmatthewhorkey now you've got me thinking... What are the rules I apply when buying wine? (Never really thought about this explicitly 🤔) - 1 or 2 bottles at a time instead of 6. Explore and differentiate. - watch out with promotions. They are Robbe handled with care. There's a reason why they want to get rid of it. Think about what might be that reason - supermarkets: not a big fan, especially not the cheaper/bulk offer. Except if they have a separate (online) offer with higher quality (and price) wines. - instead of supermarkets just go to a wine shop. Having a chat with the owner is usually very interesting. - go beyond the usual stuff. Countries and regions, you'd be surprised where they make wine. - keep a list of what you have, how long you can age it. It helps to make sure you don't overage bottles, and helps to make sure you don't buy too much. The cellar may be big enough, but if you can't drink it all... - and a last one I do from time to time: cellar leftovers ( not sure how to exactly translate "kelderresten") in (smaller) shops. Last couple of bottles, cause they switched to the next year. Ready to drink and usually with a discount. Just the things I just thought about. Who knows it might help someone 🙂

Thanks a lot, hey we're not always perfect!!
1)Stocking up on top vintages also helps me to manage my storage space like cherry picking. 2012 champagne is excellent but 2008 is the one I really backed up the car because it's once in a lifetime vintage. 2013, and 2017 Tokajis I went nuts for because they're excellent to legendary vintage. 2)Taste Taste taste ( responsibly) is extremely crucial to determine not only which style, but also what vintage. 2009 Sauternes I loaded up as much as I can because because I had a few bottles from different producers before and I really liked it ( scooped up some snow and stuck a 2009 Coutet in there and holy it's memorable). Tasting with family and friends also can assist and determining whether to load up or not. Opened a 2013, and 2017 Tokaji to taste and man I ended up being their mule plus voluntold. 3) 2nd wine from Blue chips producers as cellar defenders are often abit too pricey for me so I just grab a few lesser known producers that have a moderate aging potential while not emptying out my bank account. Champagne prices has gone up abit out of my budget range for defender so I'm working on trying out Cremant, and other sparkles so I don't overspend. 4) diversify I totally agree but finding hidden gems or under appreciate wines are also fun. 2018 Chile and 2019 Argentina are fun to try out. They're still available yet doesn't break the bank. I personally go for the Dom Maximiano especially the 2018 ( Had the 2017 and noticed it needs more time to work out it's profile so it needs another 10 years). It is also used for blind tasting competition with the blue chips plus a few others ( 2006 Berlin tasting)
