WINDSURFING TUTORIAL - THE FLAKA

Спорт

The windsurf trick that is on both Freestylers’ & some wave sailors’ lists to learn. A move that is fairly easy to do & learn once you get the right technique at the take off and that can be performed both on flat & choppy waters.
With the take-off being so key, I give you my insights why a good Carve jibe will help you progress faster in the Flaka.
With the use of unique drone angles, I further give you an inside tip on how the apparent wind will influence the Flaka & many other maneuvers in windsurfing. So even if you are not going for the Flaka next year there are a few things to learn in this clip that are not related only to the Flaka.

    What I find hard with flakas : the conditions of the water and tchops make a big difference. Sometimes it feels easy and sometimes it seems impossible. Also the movement require to go from back foot (carve on the rail) to front foot really quick and very precisely. For these reasons I never found flaka easy even if I've been doing them both sides for a long time. And I have to mention that I still put lots of time trying to improve my flakas. Still for me shakas are a lot easier. Thanks for the tutorial.

  • @dietervandereyken9271

    I 100% agree the water surface, wind strength & even the wind angle make a big impact on the Flaka. However in general the harder the conditions are the more key the sail movement gets & having your balance over your front foot. If this means you can carve less well then it's still better than having to place your weight too far to the back to make the carve. In general though if you are struggling to turn over you front foot you can start with making the foot-straps a bit bigger so your big toe is clearly over the centre line & flex your knees a bit more as you initiate the carve.

  • @lafgreg

    @lafgreg

    @@dietervandereyken9271 carving less is definitely a key factor that helped me. Though I have to be more agressive and fearless of "inserting" the sail into apparent wind. But I dont understand when you say that you carve while putting pressure on the front foot. Seems to me that to carve a windsurfing board I need to send the sail to the back and put weight on my back foot else the rail wont like it and it feels weird (spinout) ?

  • @dietervandereyken9271

    @dietervandereyken9271

    @@lafgreg the key is to carve by pushing through you big toe both front foot & backfoot. if you move the sail back at the same time your rail will engage as your weight is more over the board you can see clearly at 2:24. If you can only turn your board from your Blackfoot best would be to put your footstraps a bit bigger and get your weight even more over the board.

    Nice one! Probably not that easy to film a flaka tutorial in Medano. I have three questions: 1) what would be your top tip in trying them on the "bad side" (I can do them well on port, basically in every conditions with about 90% landing rate, but I feel like I cannot rotate over the right shoulder, feels super unnatural) 2) what is the main difference to make an air flaka (you do some pretty high ones in the clip, easily could have made an airflaka there...). I can do air flakas sometimes but it's more about right conditions and bigger chop than control and execution 😅 3) double pop flaka - when do you think about the second pop and how do you initiate it? Do you pop with legs the same way as the fist pop, or is it more pushing down on the boom, or lifting up or what? that is still quite a mystery for me.

    Hello Tomas, it was actually filmed in Abadas in pretty difficult conditions which is why some of the attempts are nearly airflakas. Let's try to get back to your questions below: 1°/ Is this your bad side for jumping or jibing as well? A lot of the Flaka comes from the take off and maybe making sure you carve good through your front foot will already help a lot as well as making sure you have a good flat water jump in you. If you have those sorted probably try to jump off more up straight. Best would be to see a clip of yourself & than make adjustments accordingly or simply try one on your good side & try to feel the difference that's how I do it when learning tricks on both side. 2°/ main difference with Airflaka is you take of more cross the wind meaning you go less down wind before doing the carve and will allow you to rotate further ones taken off. The sail you can also throw a bit more into the wind but make sure you are really well above the base when doing so this will allow you to push through the sail in the air. 3°/ I initiate it as soon as I land and I'm sliding backwards. the moment you land and have to compress the knees a bit that movement you are going to use to initiate the second pop. It's a bit easier with shakes to be honest but the key would be to initiate it early enough!

    @@dietervandereyken9271 thanks a lot for a detailed answer. My bad flaka side is actually my natural side for jumping, the problem is I can only do rotations over my left shoulder (apart from the funnel) both in freestyle and waves. I'll think about the initiation more next time. How I remember the strangest feeling is moving the sail into the wind

    I can flaka about 80% of the time but they are pretty lame. 1. I'm not sure about the pop, is it like a forward more off the back foot or more like a Bob off both feet equally? 2. I struggle to do them overpowered, the sail feels much too heavy, any tips for spilling the extra power from the sail, let's say in 25 knots on a 5.0. 90kg sailor. Thanks for your videos, I look forward to them.

    Hello Ryan, sorry for only getting back now. Been a busy 2 weeks here on Tenerife! 1. Very good questions I would say more like the forward but with your weight above the centre of the boards since you want to get the noise more up than you do for example with a normal bob, it will allow you to push the rig further forwards as well and ones you take of push the board flat or even the noise down to create your pivot point (do pull up your toes there) 2. bear a bit more of the wind but most importantly pull the clew of the sail further back behind you & oversheet the sail more when doing the carve this will deposed the sail. For this you will need to grab your back hand far enough back. Hope these tips help! More video's on the way in the near future! All the best, Dieter
