To get rid of the SciTech splash screen at startup: 1. Click Start in the taskbar and click Run... 2. Type regedit.exe 3. Go to directory: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] 4. Delete "Check for SDD updates"="C:\\Program Files\\SciTech Display Doctor\\sddboot.exe" It's always a good idea to save a copy of your system registry before editing. The SDD splash screen can be disabled within SDD -> View -> Splash screen (uncheck). I'm not sure if these instructions do something more than that... *EDIT:* These instructions do much more. They stop the whole SDD interface from auto-loading at startup, so you don't have to close it every time. The graphics drivers are still loaded fine.

This two part series was a life saver! I bought an old video game that my fiance used to play back when she was a child. I wanted to surprise her and let her relive some of her childhood but had trouble getting it to work properly. These videos made everything come together! You're the best!

Once again, thanks for helping me and countless other people with installing Windows 98 on the VirtualBox! I've actually needed Windows 98 just to run one of my dads old computer games, the game being called "Jane's Combat Simulator". I've tried running it on Windows 10, and it would just not work at all. BUT, I've tried doing it on Windows 98 in VirtualBox, and it worked! I'm sure you have helped loads of people with installing Windows 98 as it can be a long and tedious process, but it was worth it! Happy birthday. We are from a similar era. I grew up with PC's rather than macs and for exactly the reason you stated, the software. Back then there was almost nothing for mac. Good luck with the build.

Regarding the 2008 patch: I have extracted the provided file as a whole. I had the Autopatcher file and the executable files together in one file and called it "Autopatcher full". This way the exe files can find the autopatcher file. When you mount the "autopatcher full" as an ISO-file, the autopatcher file and both executables (2007 and 2008) are now visible within win98 and you can execute them consecutively. At least that's how I got it to work.

Great video! By far, one of the best KZread tutorials about VirtualBox. Please do not stop producing these excellent material.

For more than a year I used a windows 98se vm, but only until now have I experienced it in full. Thank you for giving me an excuse to use this near-obsolete OS (and teaching me things that I can use in other vm's). If possible, could you make a tutorial like this but on Windows 2000 since it has nearly the same retro look as win 98 but more modern and capable of tasks like normal web-browsing (not to mention the virtualbox guest additions support)?

how do you make sound blaster drivers work? soem games seem to require it but when i changed hardware and moved the VHD to another PC the sound blaster emulation stoopped working.

Just a heads up. He does a great job here in this video but be aware that he has a later video using PCem. I'm going with that instead of vbox which I use a lot and the heads up is that Norton deleted / quarantined the sdd file (display doctor) saying it had pua.superfluss in it which is low level but can give end-point access to unscrupulous people (and ads).

I believe the reason why the 2008 autopatcher wasn't working was because you tried running it from inside the virtual drive and its scope was only in that drive(which was completely empty and thus couldn't find the 2007 files). I've had this happen before. All you need to do is extract the installer out onto the main desktop and it should work. If not, I dunno what to tell ya.

I'm having a problem with some games, when I try to start up some of them a message says: "The following [null] error has occorred: A hardware only DirectDraw object creation was attempted but the driver did not support any hardware." I discovered it's a directX error but even after I install the supported version of it (DirectX 9.0c from 08 Dec 2006) it still gives this error, any chance of someone knowing what I need to do?

I’d recommend VMware or pcem tbh. Virtualbox even with all the fixes is quirky with 9x.

I also ask you please explain how to bring back PS/2 mouse. It cant be done just switching on PS/2 in Virtual Box properties. If you do so, VM will not launch citing that there are no appropriate drivers. Maybe some command in HOST run? I need it because it is impossible to autolock mouse in VM box once and for all if you use USB tablet. Every time I have to press Home+I to lock it.

Hi, Not had to do this so not sure. However, if you go to Device manager and install drivers this should solve the problem.

I can't get the sound to work in DOS games, it probably needs stuff in the autoexec.bat / config.sys ? Who'd a thunk having Windows 98 audio problems in 2020 :)

I have a problem with my NHL99, the game works fine and has all the sound and music, but it's not synced with the video. right from the EA sports logo, the sound drags behind about one second, any idea what would fix this? and thanks for the tutorial btw, I've been trying to get display options fixed for a long time this helped a lot!

Great info! I have a need to move files from Win98 to my host machine. Any suggestions? File sharing doesn't work. Google drive won't work in Opera 9. I can get yahoo mail to work but attachments don't work when sending mail. I've tried installing Thunderbird email using the KernelEx layer but can't get that to work.

Can you mount the vhd as a drive in your system, transfer the files, then unmount it? Worked for me on Win 10

I'm still having problems with sound. Playing Chip's Challenge, I got the background music and the sound effects to work, but after a minute or so they just randomly stop working. Also with Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, I finally have the video clips working (they no longer skip), but there is no sound whatsoever. The sound just isn't there at all. Any help would be much appreciated :)

Any way I can go back to the original icons? I don't like the unofficial icons that the auto-patcher installed.

Is there a way how you can connect Internet Explorer with all of the sites?

Hey Nevets, you are a legend. For some reason when I tried to instal the AC97 Sound Driver it shows 4 options of audio drivers and for any option a window pop up saying that the hardware is incompatible and if I want to proceed anyways... As a result of saying "yes", the audio driver seems to be installed but it doesn't work at all times (especially in applications). Do you have any idea of what can it be?

Hi there I think I found a solution for that First of all, the reason why I (and I guess you too) had this problem is that after I switched audio controller to AC97 and started the machine I skipped the window saying that the system detected a new hardware, so I did not immediately installed the new drivers (which is what Nevets did). Then, I tried to update the audio driver from the control panel but, just like you, I got four different drivers everyone apparently incompatible (and, when I installed them, there was no audio). At this point, I just reinstalled the original driver. So I tried this: I went back to control panel>system>device manager>sound video and game controller and right-clicked on the original audio driver (soundblaster or whatever) but this time I did not try to update it, I just clicked on refresh. This way it found again the new hardware, then I just followed the instructions to update its drivers and this time I got just one driver (which was not detected as incompatible). Even doing so I did not have any sound in game (only windows sounds), so I right-clicked on the sound icon on the virtual box menu (that one within the virtual machine window, on the lower right) and switched off and on the audio output (while the game was playing). This way I got sounds in game. It's not perfect, I'm still looking for a definitive solution so that I don't have to do this each time I load a game, but it works. Hope this helped

Please upload somewhere your iso file with june autopatch. The link gives december autopatch and contents of it look different, there is not installation file as you showed in december version, instead there are several bat.-files, for example Start_ME.bat. I cant initiate installation launching it. In december autopatch the same problem as in 2008 one: file is missing

I loved your video, but still having trouble with sound. I wonder if it's because the game I'm trying to play (Carmen Sandiego Great Chase Through Time) was a 2 disc game so I can only load one iso disk file at a time. I have the theme/loading music, but once the game loads I can't hear the instructions or music.

Sound can be a real issue particularly if the game uses sound directly from the disk. On physical hardware it would come from a cable directly from the CD drive to the sound card, we cannot emulate that. Essentially some games just will not work.

The autopatcher always get stuck on dial-up networking 1.4 upgrade for windows 98 se.

I followed you through every step through part 1 and 2 and I really learned a lot from you and I appreciate all your efforts. Everything went well untill I messed with the audio drivers 😑 I had sound before installing the sound drivers, now I can hear the startup sound but no sound at all in Windows media player and other stuff that got sound. It's crazy but hopefully tomorrow or so I find a solution somewhere. I really don't understand what exactly happened.

@@steve24822 I did find sound blaster drivers and got the sound to work. The only problem I got is that when I'm playing a song or any sound file the sound lags and keeps getting interepted as if the CPU is really trying to keep up with the sound. Also after trying Windows 2000 I'm very satisfied with how smooth it is also it does look a lot like 98 so it brings me the same feels. I would like to find a patch for it as well, it should be interesting. That could be an idea for your next video 😉

Firstly thank you so much for explaining how to get the graphics and internet to work because i tried it like 4 years ago to run windows 98 but the internet was a bit frustrating i didn't know what to do. Secondly, is there anyway to get a resolution higher than the 1280*1024? As in windows xp it actually recognized my 1080p monitor and is scaled at full resolution.. Lastly how much memory can it obtain? Is it the same 4gb limit for 32-bit OS or lower?

I'm not sure if this is still relevant to you a year later, but from what I've read Windows 98 gets unstable if you give it more than 512mb of RAM.

AND HELPFUL!!! i leanred so much by your videos part 1 and 2 and i wanted to say thanks to you i have done everything exept get AC97 on Virtual box. It wouldnt let me find the browse the D drive to install it. Anyways i try to play Lego Rick Raiders and i installed it but it give me the Error message "no Directx 3D accelerater could be found" and the game will not run. i installed the game with the disk and hosted the D: drive and installed the game no problem. I really LOVE this game alot and i dont know what else i can do. I would really appreciate it if i can get some help on this thanks alot :)

It seems as if your controller is Bluetooth (correct me if i'm wrong), so it most likely wouldn't show up as a usb device unless it sends signals to a usb module attached to the computer

Hello, Thanks for the great tutorial. I’m using Windows 98 Arabic Edition and is working fine. I am now trying to play an old quiz game on it but the animations and effects doesn’t work properly. Whenever I answer the question, it get stuck and doesn’t move to the next one (and doesn’t goes back to the main menu). Any idea on how to fix it and I will be appreciated. Sorry, I haven't managed to make networking with the host work. I'm not sure if anyone has to be honest, I cannot find any working examples.

Any way of preventing SciTech from nagging you each reboot? I just want to hide the dialog box that comes up after a fresh boot of the system. Minor annoyance but I know there has to be a fix somewhere...

I skipped the patch because I just don't feel like Windows XP icons mix very well with Windows 98 and also because I'm using the VM for the sole purpose of retro gaming.

Hi.. so under device manager you still have an un recognized device @ 17:23 ... i have the same unknown device PCI SYSTEM Peripheral.. and installing auto patch with ie 6.o breaks the internet connection.. hi! i have gotten win98se up and going like you showed int eh previous video, but the sound in games is all stuttering and seems to be slowing, and causing the games to be stuttery in movements too - i tried the AC97 but that just was even worse. In particular i am trying to get M1 Tank Platoon 2 working and visually in the game it works, but the sound is a stuttery and echoing - is there a different option thant AC97? are there some other better soundblaster drivers i can use?

Both videos have been fantastic. Everything has worked fine, except when trying to install the Autopatch. It reaches the point when the desktop icon is created. Then, when I double click to proceed with the actual installation it does proceed and the following pop up window appears: STRART_ME “There is not enough memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and try again”. By the way, I have no other program running and the memory I assigned during creation of the VBox was 1024 MB, not the suggested 512 MB. Could please assist if you have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you,

1. Start Windows 98, click the Start button in the lower left corner and select "Run" 2. In the Run-dialog enter "msconfig" (without quotes) and press OK 3. Go to tab "Startup" and deselect checkbox for entry "Check for SSD updates" an press OK 4. Restart to see if it works ;-)

I'm running out of ideas, fisher-price toyland sound doesn't work properly with soundblaster16 or AC97. fisher-price dollhouse kind of works on Windows 98 but froze, and rugrats muchinland crashes after typing name on Windows 8, freezes in xp mode, plays very slowly after entering name without sound using soundblaster16 in Windows 98, and loads without sound and freezes after entering name with AC97 driver.

I feel for you, I really do. It's important to realise that not everything is going to work. Unfortunately, you will not be able to make any games that require 3d acceleration to work and even though I have managed to get dozens of games sound working, I cannot get them all to work. Are you sure they are Windows games? If they are DOS then this is probably not the best way to do it, you may be better off using Dosbox.

I opened the sound files for fisher-price toyland in quicktime, they work there but not in game. the old fisher-price games are 2d and said it's for Windows 95 and 3.1.

To help you on your way. You need to edit your autoexec.bat file and add a path to your sound card driver and a config line. Doing a search on google something like "virtualbox dos sound autoconfig.bat" should get you started.

Mate. I installed game using isos but when trying to launch it, it asking for the game cd. But I already mounted it to the CD drive. Help....

this is very nice but can you play old 3d games like moto racer 2, midtown madness 2 here? tried vmware, a different versions of dosbox, pcem and all of that are crap, games have all kinds of problems

The short answer is maybe. There is no perfect emulation of Windows 98, some games work others do not. If the game supports glide then PCEM is probably best. Even on real hardware it is difficult to find a build that will support everything.

The simple answer is no. Windows would have to detect 3dfx hardware to then install the drivers. Essentially you would have to emulate the hardware which is no small task, way beyond my abilities I am afraid. One day maybe someone will do it but I wouldn't hold your breath.

For these videos I used my own copies from back in the day. However, there are loads of places where you can download these games. Have a search on Google, it won't take you long to find them.

Nice videos, couple of things for you to try: Have you tried installing video driver "vbe miniport - standard pci graphics adaptor (vga)" on your Win98 VM? I've been using my VM for many years with that driver with no problems at all. I think it may be better then installing that DisplayDoctor program. I set this up many years ago and just setup a network share folder to transfer files without the need of creating iso's. I found one tutorial here on YT showing how to do this without me having to explain how to do that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXijlpJwadKeodY.html

That is certainly a driver problem. I can't tell you exactly how to fix it but you may have some luck changing some of Virtualbox's settings.

Ooops, yes I did. To be honest, time was an issue, the video was getting really long. It can be done, let's see how things go with this video and maybe there will be a part 3.

If you don't want to get pissed off at your computer just do this in VMware Player. For me VirtualBox froze consitently after I logged on to the VM.

@@steve24822 I was successful to install Autopatch skipping moment where the whole thing freezed. Although I had error further during Windows start with missing file. I could retrieve this missing file from Windows 98 CD using System File Checker

@@fredsakay994 how did you fix it as it keeps freezing on every other file for me

can you test at your end if you can get M1TankPlatoon2, iM1A2 or iF-22 working? all of these have software render options that dont need direct3d. I initially got im1a2 working normally, but now after having to try again from an earlier snapshot it runs too fast even in this VM, and the sound is missing. It was all there when i did the initiial windows98 setup as per you previous vide. I dont want to have to start all over again from scratch

i went and installed the ac97 again folllowing your steps exactly and now i cant even install M1t ankplatoon 2 on the system, it is ridiculous - what does installing AC97 do that it stops me running even setup exes?

ah ha success - not with ac97 that is a mess, but with the soundblaster drivers - i went into dxdiag and turned off the acceleration for directdraw and turned the directsound to its lowest non hardware setting and now all the sounds work perfectly!

@@kingabomination that is good to hear - what did you do to get it working exactly? i still get strange situations where if i run the vm, that the sound will be stuttering or missing, and then i have to go into the dxdiag and put the directsound back up to full - and then it works, - good enough for me though

@@divinuminfernum I did what you said and it was working perfectly in menus until I got into gameplay, Then it started stuttering again. I disabled the sound in the VM at the bottom right sound options, and enabled it again. Worked perfectly after that.

It is my confirmed belief that windows 10 home does NOT allow you to use any virtual machine, especially if the operating system is constantly being updated. Please believe me, … I'd tried!! I gave up after three hours. This is not a good sign. Sorry!! Can you help me???
