The "see more" menu pretty much sums up what i HATE about the Windows user experience. They never include everything in their new-fangled apps and menus so they have to send you to the older implementation that it was supposed to replace. It just breaks whatever illusion of seamlessness you may have had.

  • @fenn_fren

Yeah. Whenever they're "reworking" something they just add a new thing instead of actually overhauling the old one, and the new thing is then just incomplete enough that you have to keep going to the old one.

11 looks like more of the same of what 10 is. A mishmash of new "user friendly" glossy UI but all the advanced customization features are hidden away under the old W7 menus. They're trying to idiot proof the OS with big shiny buttons but they don't update the complex features to the new design. It's just tacked on. That's why Control Panel still exists despite the whole PC settings menu being designed to replace it. If Microsoft wants a new OS they should just build it from the ground up instead of trying to improve/change things. Every update that brings new features seems to break something that then requires a workaround to fix.

@@scopie49 That’s sort of an unfair characterization. If you look at the settings app vs the control panel, features have been steadily migrated from the control panel to the Settings app with every release. Windows 11 has moved a large chunk of them as well. In practice, Settings has gone from an app I totally ignored to one that can handle the majority of my configuration tasks. It’s been a clumsy process, but I don’t think there was a better option. “Start from the ground up” is an obvious non-starter; that would require an insane amount of development effort and it would be a bug-ridden mess. This is a game that Microsoft has played for decades: picking and choosing where to spend their development hours. Sometimes they choose well, other times not so much, but I think this time they’ve made the right calls.

This. I hated the new windows settings when they introduced it. I just cannot seem to find whatever I want hidden behind those tiles and the confusing menu structure and I constantly found myself going back to the oldschool control panel. I understand that they want to make it look less cluttered but as a result, every of those handful of tiles now has so much content and options hidden behind them that it's really not intuitive at all where you need to go to find whatever setting you are looking for. The old system might have been ugly but at least you had a good and accessible overview of everything. So many of those new design choices feel like they're made with phones and tablets in mind to create a more unified experience across devices like the completely useless launchpad that Apple introduced for MacOS a while ago. The end result is far too often something that is just not as good as it used to be for a mouse-and-keyboard input style.

Yes it's like communism. Everyone is same. Why has to be the same os interface for both pcs and handheld devices. Maybe someone likes this. I get irritated of the big ugly icons, half screen menus, funy bulky start menu, head bar filled with "common" large previewing icons instead of menu bars as it is made for 5 year olds. I guess I am a retro grumpy old guy who doesn't like flashy icons doing a flip and roll before opening an app, like a dog goes around in circles 3 times before laying down. I should appreciate that it tries to entertain while it opens a document or so.

The new contex menu uses a new API. You need the dev to implement their apps to the new contex menu that's why Microsoft still provide "show more" option so some legacy app still can be accessible until they move to the new API. And Rename is in the new contex menu. It's between copy and delete button.

A few big cons about windows 11 for me would be, you currently can't change the taskbar size, and when you have the taskbar set to auto hide it sometimes doesn't work or pop up when you mouse over it. Hopefully these things would be fixed when more people start using windows 11.

not more intuitive I think, just more shiny & modern-looking (more Mac-like or mobile-like design language). It will probably work well for any surface tabs but Windows 10's sharp corners vs MacOS's soft rounded look fit both of their respective signature target demographics (i.e. productive office people vs creative artsy people), and the sharp corners by default enabled having both sharp corners for most apps & rounded for those that use custom window frames instead (like Electron apps). Rounded does look more friendly all around though They need to tweak the balance of minimalism & simplicity

@@Norweeg I'd rather they stick with their old design that people know. Fact is that windows 10 was acceptable because it kept more of what people liked about windows 7 and earlier windows than what windows 8 did. Trying to mess with the user interface yet again is a boneheaded move. You can color or stylize the UI, but don't you dare change how it works, or it will be a failure. I'm predicting windows 11 to solidly fail as MS still hasn't fully learned that lesson yet.

@Cindy SparkleFarts while people focus on the UI changes (some are good, some are not like the stripped down right click menu) this is pretty much 100% about security. In fact, If you have supposed hardware (mainly supported CPU), you can get every single security feature that is gained in windows 10. If you have supported hardware I'm unsure why you wouldn't upgrade. I do agree the added security is going to cause headaches for home users. Do you think the average user is going to know what to do if they are prompted for a bit locker key because the bios got reset? I had that happen, my battery on the motherboard was lose so when I unplugged the power cord the BIOS went back to the default settings, including the secure boot keys and certs, if you have your BL key then you just enter it and it fixes itself. MS tried to make secure boot mandatory in 8.1 but backed down due to user outrage. The CPU compatibility list is due to the virtual based features needed. VBS requires. MS actually goes into detail about this but yet refuse to publicly say why these new virtualization technologies, or updated existing ones are required. Defense Guard took some steps as it only works with edge natively but there is an extension for Chrome/Firefox. This is more geared towards businesses as you need a gpo, (you can setup the local policy if you want) Essentially I'd you go to a url on the not approved list, it opens in a virtualized tab, completely isolated from the rest of the OS so no malware or ransomware effects the system. While this sounds similar to sandboxing tabs, same concept but more secure as it protects the kernel at all costs. Time will tell but my company already announced that they will be pushing windows 11 although they are going to have to buy some new hardware www.google.com/amp/s/www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/ok-microsoft-you-win-im-buying-a-windows-11-pc/ Now, with this required hardware-enforced containerization and virtualization tech, Windows 11 will isolate applications and processes much more easily. It will be much more difficult for malware in an errantly running application to access resources it isn't supposed to. It will only access the resources in that specific application task that it infects, such as a particular browser tab. It won't have a free run of the OS, and if the infected task is detected based on its known malware signature, it's nuked in orbit. Core Isolation requires a hypervisor, whereas MDAG appears to use host-based virtualization (which has less stringent hardware requirements), which could be the difference. So it's unknown at this point if Gen6 systems like my 2016-era Dell XPS 8900 (Intel Skylake) running on the prerelease today will still be working on the gold release of Windows 11 in October. It would be nice if they did. I'm not counting on it.
