That is tehachepi, the only farm with America’s first turbines. Those are old Vestas towers, V20’s I believe. They’re only 600kw towers, baby boys. The first turbines went up in 1989, and it all started there.

But it was only spinning so fast because they couldn't get electricity from the generator and thus didn't load it. So the only thing slowing it down was friction and air resistance.

A lot of these machines in California have just lost the cover structure(I'm assuming it's sheet metal) presumably because they have a hinge for maintenance. They've been ripped off in storms over 40 years of operation. It just looks like it's burnt, but it's not. If it had caught fire, the blades would likely have burned too. Usually they do in wind turbine fires.

No. It wasn't generating at all, that's why it ran away. When they're generating, the electrical consumption of the grid slows it down by constantly taking energy and keeps it at right speed.

That is amazing footage. However, to be honest I still think that you were too close to that turbine here. When those things have a catastrophic failure like that then those blades become flying debris like the blade of a guillotine. That's no exaggeration! That debris can kill you like that!

the turbine is burnt out, the blades failed when a burnt piece of railing got sucked unto the rotor, breaking the timber frame holding the fiberglass together, turning them into floppy noodles.

it's burnt, isolated and the transmission is broken. so no electricity was generated.

when the burnt up bit of railing got sucked into the blades, it broke the timber structure insid them causing the entire structure of the fiberglass blades to fail.

Yes we found the brake 500' away after the unit failed. The brake went and it was a matter of time before it completely failed in high winds.

@@silasmcgee3647 It was an old and rusty turbine. Makes no sense to try to do anything. Better to get the last days of juice out and then "decommission" it in a spectacular fashion. Just make sure that people are kept out! That way you save on demolition costs.
