You have to understand what had just happened internationally when this song hit in 1990. In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Empire (murderers of 60 million innocents) was in the process of crumbling. Nobody had thought the USSR would EVER fall, but it did and this song was a love song to the Russian people from the German grandsons of those who tried to destroy the USSR in 1941-45. And to those Eastern Europeans who'd been trapped behind the Iron Curtain from 1945 to 1990. So sad, but such a wonderful song. Peace between Russia and Germany was finally possible after a century of pain.

Exactly, as one of them said at the end, it's a time and a place and this song was perfectly placed for the time that it came out. You wouldn't understand the emotion behind it, captured in its music video, regarding the collapse of the Soviet Union if you didn't live through that time period. That's what made this an S tier song.

Yeah, in addition to the message in response to what was happening at this moment in history, the song definitely benefited from the extra weight of being written and released by a German band.

I was in the Army at the time, stationed in West Germany by the East German border. We didn’t fully appreciate the Cold War was over and German reunification was happening without a shot fired. Incredible time and place in history. The optimism and joy was palpable
You were obviously not around when the Berlin wall fell, but this song is a celebration of the joy the Berliners felt when that symbol of communist oppression was torn down. A joy that was felt around the world. Knowing the backstory makes this song even more impactful.

I lived in Germany in 1990. The Wall had fallen, the Soviet Union had dissolved, the winds of change were blowing and this song was EVERYWHERE.
This song really makes me emotional. It is really hard to explain to younger generations that while the 80's really were fun, crazy and ridiculous, there was always the cold war at the back of your mind, thoughts of nuclear winters, wondering how hiding behind a door would save you if the bombs came, and horror stories from the Eastern Bloc every night on the news. Then, suddenly (and it was sudden), that went away. This song reminds me of being 20 and optimistic that WW3 may not happen after all. The Winds of Change sums it up in a perfect 5 minutes.

There was a REASON this song has almost 100 million more hits than all the rest of their catalog, and it’s something you’ll never get from just listening to it like you have done. YOU HAD TO BE THERE at that particular time in history-it was this amazing watershed moment that you will never fully appreciate or even understand unless you lived though it like I did and as did so many others that are posting here. Reading what so many have written here brings back so many memories and emotions from those days. How can we possibly describe what it was like? After decades of anxiety and existential dread, suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, what was until then simply unimaginable-happened! The walls came down. That cruel and deadly divide that had divided our world our entire lives simply crumbled away-literally overnight!-and for an infinitely fragile moment we dared to hope. It felt like the whole world was caught up together “in the magic of the moment, on a starry night” “who would ever think that we could be so close, like brothers?” Truly, “Winds of Change” was the anthem that gave voice to everything. I still get tears when I listen to it even now.

I feel the same way. Chokes me up every time I hear it. The optimism at that time was so refreshing, and I had no idea then how fragile and short-lived it would be. We won't feel that again until the U.S. and Chinese governments get tossed out by the people and we can all begin anew again.
Having served as a tanker in Erlangen, Germany (Charlie Company, 1-35 Armor), in the final years of the Cold War 86-89 I can tell you unashamedly that this song never fails to make me choke up and get a little teary eyed.
Really beautiful song about the reunification of Germany.
This song is of it's time at least as much as many late 60's counterculture songs. The fall of the Berlin Wall inspired hope in many of us. Not my fave Scorps song, but it makes me sad that we missed such a great chance to make a better world.

Remember the time Alex and Andy totally misunderstood the context and lyrics of 'Brothers in Arms' by Dire Straits and gave it a 'b' rating.....almost unsubscribed but I calmed my ego lol
Honestly, this song is right up there with the most historically important modern songs (at least in my opinion). I wasn't even alive in that time period but even I can feel all the emotions (though it might help a bit that I am German and have therefore a deeper connection to the subject matter than people from other countries)

I agree it has historical significance. It is a rare thing for a song to so perfectly embody the Zeitgeist of a major historical turning point like this song does.
I love anthems that commemorate real events, so its a timeless piece for all of us, S tier for me.
Still Lovin’ You is where you go next….. Winds of Change isn’t cheesy, you need to know what was happening in the world at the time. Rather than cheesy it was on the money. Great reaction, this song gets an A rating from me as well.
@Silber7

As a SONG, it IS cheesy - but if any has the right to be, than this
The emotion that they were feeling with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the crumbling of the Soviet Union is very evident in this song, especially for a German band that loved through the the epicenter of the Cold War. To have their country basically reunited was very powerful…powerful for all of us around the Democratic world
For scale, this is a song about events that were equally as positive to the world as 9/11 was devastating to the US. It's a celebration of the world coming out of decades of darkness. It may sound silly to attribute all of that to a metal band's ballad, but those feelings are genuinely there.
This song came out when the world was a better place than it is now. It's sad how far this world has fallen since this song😢
So much Scorpions greatness to get to, "Loving You Sunday Morning", "No One Like You", "Still Loving You", "China White", "Big City Nights".

If you're in an arena in Germany, then this is S+! A+ for me. I've always loved this song. Sure it has it's cheesy ballad gloss, but it's the lyrics (and vocal delivery) that do it for me here! It's a love song to the reunified Germany. To all the families torn apart by the Iron Curtain, and to lives lost to it too! The video released for this song certainly added to the poignancy - images of people taking sledge hammers to the Berlin Wall, tearing it down by hand, by machinery, and then family members embracing - some having not seen each other for years because some were on the West, others the East - the old 'no man's land section between sides becoming a meeting place, the emotion was visceral. This was so much more than a 'power ballad'! Great reaction guys. I do wish you'd bring back your 'lyrical analysis' pause and extend the discussion.

S tier by context in any setting
This song became an anthem to a moment in time in November 1989 when the Berlin Wall opened and then came down. The Scorpions got this out in the next year and it quickly became the song that represented that moment in history. I was fortunate to be stationed and live in Berlin and I can tell you this song took off like a rocket when it was released. Between this Scorpions piece, and Rodger Waters doing his "The Wall" concert (without the rest of Pink Floyd) next to the Brandenburg Gate, music was the tribute of the generation of Berlin citizens to the change that swept the Honecker regime out and into the dustpan of history.
Sat in school one Monday and my friend Rob came back from visiting friends in Berlin with pieces of the wall for me. Living through such an incredible time and this song always brings back amazing memories. Was hoping A&A might know more of the context of this tune and thus give it higher marks.
I love this song. One of the great rock ballads in my opinion.
For this song the context is everything. It's a cheesy ballad, but it's a cheesy ballad about one of the most important and inspiring events of the 20th century. Easily one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I still remember that night vividly and this song chokes me up and takes me right back "to the magic of the moment" every damn time.
Scorpions power ballads - Send me an angel, Holiday, Still loving you. Their normal hard rocking songs are too many to list! Great band 🤩🤩
Just like everyone's been saying, the historical importance as well as the emotional uplift from the toppling of the Berlin Wall, simply cannot be overstated. And this song encapsulates those things so well. On a side note, for a great old Scorpions song, check out "The Sails of Charon". Badass tune.
The video for this is worth watching strictly due to what is said at the end. This definitely captures the end of the Cold War vibe. As someone else pointed out, check out still loving you for another great slow ballad by them.
Have you hit “Still loving you” yet? To me it’s their best track and possibly the greatest power ballad of all time.

I remember being all alone, in the middle of the night, watching the fall of the Berlin Wall. It had been there my whole life, and the sheer joy of watching history right there and seeing something I never thought would happen...the tears running down my face. THIS song brings all that back for me...very special song for those of us that saw it happen.
This song will always remind me of the fall of the Berlin Wall. An iconic moment and an iconic band. You should react to "Still Loving You" by Scorpions if you haven't already. It's another great rock ballad.
Other comments said it, there is SO much more in the Scorpions music library. Band is in my top ten, they have a ton of solid A+& S tracks. One thing, I wish you guys would've done the official video, it brings an element that just adds to the impact of the lyrics. The Cold War was a shadow looming over the West & when the Berlin Wall fell became an anthem for millions. (They actually performed for Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev & donated proceeds of this song to a children's hospital) This is an S+ for me because of the message.
I never get tired of this song!
To put this into context, I would suggest watching a video of the day the Berlin Wall was torn down while listening to this song. Then I think you would understand, at least a little bit, how the entire world felt that day. This song is very sentimental, and impactful due to the “change” in history that was happening.
I saw the Scorpions in 1984 in Tampa FL and Bon Jovi OPENED for them. They were the heat back then. My ears rang for three days. Epic concert.
this was a super big hit specially in context of its time around the berlin wall. you might enjoy there ballads, which are also pretty known, like: Still Loving You or Send Me An Angel
Solid consistently good Rock Band, we needed more of them in the 80s
Such a magical song that perfectly captured the zeit geist of its time
I remember when this came out. This is good, but almost run of the mill after hearing their scorching classic “Still Loving You”. Which is exceptional. I cannot believe you are this many in and haven’t hit their huge stand out song! Next pls. You won’t regret it.
I graduated from High School in 1983, this song is the sound track of my young adulthood. You cannot imagine this songs impact at the time, simply a passport back in time for some of us.
I was 6yro when the Berlin wall fell. I saw it on TV. It was amazing, I didn't fully understand what was happening, but I felt the joy through the screen and I'll never forget it. This song is special to me and I'm not even German, I'm Portuguese.
I get chills listening to this knowing the context it was written in. I was in college in 1989 and remember the Berlin Wall coming down. Such a relief for the world back then. I have family that lived in West Germany (now just Germany) and I am 50% German. Such an amazing song!
Every time I hear this song I can't help tearing up. Mr. Gorbachev,"take down that wall" Freedom my brothers.
Just the whistling gives it an A+🙂 ...and I've always loved how his accent shines through, beautiful melody, just great work.
I was lucky enough to have won backstage passes plus V.I.P. meet and greet when the Scorpions came to town in 1984. They were incredibly nice and Respectful!
Great classic from an incredible band.
My favorite ballad of theirs is "Send Me An Angel". I recently saw a live video version of it and it was as great as the studio version. I do agree that ""Still Lovin' You" should be your next reaction..
Such an epic song, brings back a lot of memories… this banger describes our general feel when the Berlin Wall came down, and families and friends from east and west Germany got together again after years of being apart… simply beautiful! Also from the Crazy World album: “To be with you in heaven”. Top notch.
My youth was during the Cold War and then suddenly East Germany collapsed and the wall came down. This song is about that time, a time of hope for Europe and the world. That hope is gone again but this song still hits me 😢.
I can’t hear this without thinking of the Berlin Wall and 1990. I was in college and it was an awesome time to be alive!
I love this song. Thank you for the reaction.
Being a German band, and seeing their country reunited after decades of separation from friends and family was the inspiration for this song.
The context of that song is amazing, and the actual video tells the story.

The Scorpions have produced 19 studio albums since 1972 and their entire discography contains even more, like compilation LP's. You're bound to hit more then just a couple of bangers with these guys.
I was in the US Army stationed in Illesheim, West Germany 1987-1989. Great times and music. Seen some great concerts! Great song here! We went to Berlin and guarded the wall and then at the end of my tour the wall came down!
I love this song!
Definitely written for a time such as that. It was emotional and they’re great musicians. If you were living through it, it hits different. Still Loving You is my favorite. Check it out. It’s a banger!
The comments below capture the songs meaning well. It was a time when Hope was in there, and Freedom was being celebrated. It was a wonderful moment. Fast forward 33 years and the world feels the opposite.
I was actually there in Berlin as an American tourist when the wall fell; was pulled up & in turn helped pull others up onto the wall that night; gave flowers to East Berliners crying with joy in their Trabbies the next day. There was actually another song inspired by the event that was more popular there, a joyful jumpy one called “Berlin, Berlin,” sung in German. I was more of an alternative rock fan but the emotions this ballad captured for half the world were important, on par with Bob Geldof’s efforts of the time.
I remember when the wall fell... such emotion. This song encapsulates that moment wonderfully.
I was 10 at this time and remember the Berlin Wall coming down. This song and video were huge and still brings me back to there!!
A song popular for the subject of the lyrics, especially in the context of the time, as much as anything.
Song gets me every time!

Most iconic video ever. The eighties the video and the songs were a full experience
As many others are stating....I was an Army brat most of my life. We were stationed in the middle east in the early 70's (Iran). It was a hard world at that point in time. I NEVER thought we would see the Berlin wall fall in my lifetime. We were glued to the TV and radio when this was happening in my last year of college. When one major network played a montage of scenes of the wall being torn apart and they dropped this song into the background....damn.
I hope a rock band from Ukraine writes and performs a song like this some day.

Man I miss the optimism of those days. There was a brief time when we actually thought the world was going to heal and become a compassionate, loving world for all mankind and all life. Those days seem so distant now. That feeling was lost long ago.
First 3 albums are GOLD Jerry! Lonesome Crow, Fly to the Rainbow and In Trance.
It was a very different world 30 years ago. This was HUGE! The optimism the world felt for a brief moment when East and West Berlin became just Berlin is the theme here. And you're right also about it being a classic Arena Rock anthem.
As a person who was pulled out of school into an assembly to watch the Berlin wall fall. As a person who tucked and covered in the hallways while doing a drill for Nuclear attacks, this song was an epic historic moment! No more Mutual Assured Destruction! Cold War over! Peace in our time. It hasn't worked out that way, but at the time it was a giddy optimistic time! And this band was the only one that really chronicled it
This is such a pretty song. I love this band.
