Winchester SXP 12-Gauge- Full Choke Pattern

Patterning the Winchester SXP 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun. After other considerations, we went with the Winchester SXP. We're fairly new to the wing shooting world but after reading countless reviews, we went with this one. For under $300, we could not pass it up.
I’ve never really patterned my shotguns in the past. I took it out of the box and was good to go. But a few misses last year got me thinking to get a different choke and see how my gun was patterning. You might not think it matters much but an inch to the left or right of a flying target and you’ll say good bye as you watch the bird or duck fly away.
So I recommend getting out and shooting your gun with the choke and load that you will be hunting with and see how your gun patterns. Make sure to read your manual on what chokes are recommended for what type of shot you are shooting.
Follow us to see if we can get some birds down this year!

    How was the pattern at 40 yards in your experience? To me it looked okish, but I don'th have a reference of what "good" would look like

  • @MNMadeAdventures

    @MNMadeAdventures

    If you use the same ammo that gives you a desired pattern, it’s actually pretty consistent! I’ve had to use other brands of ammo due to shortage of what I normally use and it definitely patterns differently. But yes, that pattern at 40 yards is not bad.

    Yesterday I shot my Winchester SXP defender. It shoots 3 inches higher with 1 oz slug at 40 yards. I dont know if this front copper sighting bead can be adjusted.

  • @MNMadeAdventures

    @MNMadeAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    The front bead usually can not be adjusted on this type of shotgun. Because the defender is made primarily for home defense, it’s not the most accurate for shooting slugs. Also because it doesn’t have a rifled barrel that helps with slug accuracy. If you want to continue to shoot slugs, try a few different brands of slugs and see which one gives you the best pattern. Hope this helps!

    Mine came with a full and the improved cylinder one which should I use for duck hunting?

  • @MNMadeAdventures

    @MNMadeAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    I used to use the full choke when I started duck hunting because I didn’t have any decoys and shot at ducks flying by but now I’m using the improved choke because they fly in closer to my decoy spread. I think it depends on your situation. If the ducks are coming in close, 20 yards or less, improved is fine. If you are shooting 30-40 yards, use full choke. The manual does also say not to use steel in full choke.

    What if I told you I have a 1973 Mossberg 500 with a 30" barrel and fixed full choke that will take a 3" #4 buck load with 41 pellets and put 35 to 38 pellets in a 8" circle at 110 yards these new shotguns look great but screw in chokes are a joke

    @@MNMadeAdventures I'm a gunsmith and FFL dealer here in Florida,The new shotguns I found that from inside the barrel from chamber to screw in choke the barrel measures cylinder bore so the pellets or load is choked to cylinder bore then the last 2" approximately it gets slammed together to whatever choke you install, for just that fraction of time and doesn't stabilize,the old fixed choke barrels are whatever choke it's stamped From chamber the full length of the barrel the load gets stable,I wish my old one was as smooth and light and fancy as the news ones without loosing my performance,I'm going to post the deer video next week along with a pattern test of a Benelli m-4 a Remington 11-87 super mag both with bucks extended range chokes then my old pump
