As a fellow Dutchman, I consider this match the best tennis match a countryman ever played, against an in-form top favorite Sampras in his absolute prime at his favorite tournament. The round of 16 against an in-form Stich the second best. After removing these two from the draw, with Ivanisevic being ousted by Stoltenberg, the title was just a formality.

Thank you for the upload. Wimbledon is still special, but man, NBC knew how to present it. From the theme song, to Dick Enberg and Bud Collins. NBCs broadcast of the Championships in the 80s and 90s was Wimbledon at its best.

Krajicek was on fire at Wimbledon this year, nobody was going to stop him winning the title. Sampras was classy enough to say the better player won on the day, sometimes it happens.

In 1998, I bet Sampras was relieved that Ivanisevic beat Krajicek in the other semi-final. While Sampras was definitely wary of Ivanisevic and the fact that he often felt powerless when returning his serve (while knowing that a bad game on serve could land him in a lot of trouble), I think he was even more wary of Krajicek. Krajicek won their next 3 matches after this 1996 Wimbledon match including in the semi-finals of the 1998 Stuttgart Masters when he played brilliant tennis all week to win the title, and 6 of their first 8 matches, before Sampras won their last 2 to make the narrow his lead in the h2h. Sampras in 1998 looked to have noticeably declined compared to his general 1993-1997 level, and was pushed by Ivanisevic to 5 sets in the final. He was a mental giant in Wimbledon finals, but I think Krajicek is the one player from his generation that could have beaten on that stage.

krajicek was not just a big server. he had the complete package and arsenal of all court strokes. his forehand was incredibly powerful, he had explosive returns and passing shots plus was incredibly fast. i know people talk a lot about stichs all court ability, but Richard was superior in my opinionalso he has excellent revords against sampras, agasdi, becker, stich

Me and my brother watched this, him 12 and me 13, and were in awe of Krajicek. To us, Sampras was the tennis equivalent (at the time) of the Terminator-you simply could not stop him, and that made Richard’s victory incredible.

Krajicek's game bothered Sampras - he had an 8-6 winning head to head against Pete. The men's event in 1996 had some really odd results. I remember Arthur Ashe saying something interesting, that when the weather is so bad during a tournament, the constant delays upset the players rhythm and there are often some shock results. The weather during that summer in 1996 here in England was terrible and we had one one of the most surprise finals at Wimbledon in many years.

The weather truly does affect more than we know. Monica Seles lost in the French open final in 1998 against Sanchez vicario who she had a 20-1 record against and it was due to the horrid damp wet but humid weather.

@@benstephenson9732 not at all. It was the conditions. She defeated her just two weeks later at Wimbledon and a few times a month later. It was the damp wet slower atmosphere. She just didn’t have the same ability to whip as she did the day before in the semi final against Hingis who she defeated 63 62 after losing the first five meetings. Seles was in great form. She even won the second set to love in the final when the sun came out a bit. Watch you’ll see. I saw both (semi and final) live! It was conditions no nerves or upset. She even spoke about it in her second autobiography.

I wouldnt call Richard Krajicek a one hit wonder, than Del Potro or Conchita is too, for example. What does it mean one hit wonder anyway, to win a single GS? There are numerous women in past 5 years to do so as well, nobody is calling them a one hit wonder, I still hear about Raducanu as a big promising potential rather than one hit wonder, as if she will win another 8 GS..What is Krejickova will win at least 6 more GS too..

Richard Krajicek is absolutely not a "one-hit" wonder. The term I've heard used is "one-slam wonder." One-hit wonder usually refers to music. But to answer your question, a "one-hit wonder" is a player that won a slam but did nothing else of significance. Examples would be Petr Korda, Thomas Johansson and Gaston Gaudio. Other one-slam winners like Goran, Andy Roddick and Maran Cilic had outstanding careers and made multiple grand slam finals and would therefore not be put in that category.

I think Emma Raducanu is the biggest joke in tennis. She had a cupcake draw and beat a tired Leylah Fernandez in the final. But the difference between her and any of the other one-slam winners on the women's side and Richard Krajicek is that they are still active. If they retire with one slam, they would all be considered "one-hit wonders." Raducanu has literally done nothing besides winning the US Open. She would be one of the worst one-hit wonders ever. Other one-hit wonders on the women's side would be Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Panetta and Iva Majoli. Caroline Wozniacki would not be on the list, despite only winning one slam because she had an outstanding career, winning a bunch of titles and being world number one. There are many more women in this category than men because of the dominance of the Big Three.

The linesman called it in, meaning it was inside the sideline, but the lines woman on the side called it long. What's wrong with winning a match on an ace? It's the ultimate way to win a match for a big server like Krajicek. And it was his 30th, so it was a nice round number.
