Love the descriptive comments ... I entered the "Wilson World" at "system 5 & 6", and much like the "instant & effortless scaling" comment (11 minutes in) always described them as having the ability to: pick you up out of the sofa, slam you against the wall, then gently put you back on the sofa again. I've experienced nothing at any price that can deliver that kind of emotional content !

Excellent analysis and insights on the Wilson sound. Your description of their product's sound and target goals I consider spot on. Though their unflinching honesty is not my cup of tea. For me it is either, Sonus Faber, I fell in love with the Olympia IIIs and Vandersteen Audio. In Vandersteen’s line I have heard everything up to the famous Model 7s and the yet to be released Kantos when Richard Vandersteen came to town. Vandersteen is a brilliant designer and one of the few left from that time frame. I currently own Vandersteen Quatro and love them. I want to hear a pair of Wilson’s one day. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mentioned Magnepan as well, I have owned 1.6s in the past. Michael Fremmer did a review sometime ago and he talked about how much better my Quatro imaged than his current Wilson Alexia. The biggest point is when you find that speaker for you, you will know it and if the rest of your system is up to par and the room is properly treated it all comes together, which is what we all strive for in this great hobby of ours.

Very cool review. I'm very much in agreement with Villipe. Back in the day the Watt Puppy was the biggest deal in the audiophile world, everyone was raving about them. And I thought it totally sucked because although they did a lot of things very good, the highs would make my ears start to bleed after more than about a half hour. I ended up buying Genesis 300 instead. Several years later I went to an event held by Overture in Delaware, where I had bought the Genesis and heard the Sabrina and thought it was ok, but the Sasha was incredible. I wanted it, it did everything the Watt Puppies did and more, also they didn't make my ears bleed. Only thing now was I no longer had the space for them nor the funds to buy the Sasha. I currently have the Buchardt SE S400 that I am so very impressed with for their size, performance and price. I'm pretty happy with them, but I'm once again in the process of upgrading. As I'm sure you know how obsessive this thing can be, and more than likely I'll be getting another beautiful Italian, but not Sonus Faber. I still may some day get the Wilsons. Lastly Villipe describes the the Wilson sound and Sonus Faber sound exactly like I do. Feminine and Masculine. Jay...kid you were close, but no cigar. Klipsch and JBL have that American Muscle kind of sound that's not exactly the Wilson sound. This was the best video from you three thus far. Jay I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's so good to see you and your boys picking up the torch in this hobby that some call audiophile.

When it comes to speaker placement and listening position distance do you guys generally end up with an equal distant triangle, meaning listening position from the speakers is typically the same distance the speakers are apart? I typically like the two-thirds formula where the speakers are two-thirds the distance apart than I am from them, essentially I’m 50% further away than they are apart. Thanks.

I’m a current 1.7i owner and still not 100% in love with them, sometimes I fell I like box speakers better. I’m trying some different components in my system to see if that is the issue. Anyway, have heard many people defending that no box speakers can sound as good as panel so would love to hear from you guys! Thanks love the channel. I really like you guys and how you present your reviews - honest, well considered and ORGANIC! (Sorry not sorry!) But here’s my question ... what is a retired working stiff to do? I love music but don’t have the scratch (unless I risk divorce) for these levels of reproduction. I appreciate Jay’s reviews of more affordable gear (along with Zero, Guttenberg, etc.,) and don’t begrudge anyone who has the means to purchase way above my pay grade. But sometimes I think there’s a point at which there’s more focus on the SOUND than on just enjoying the music. Maybe I’m a curmudgeon, but I’ve earned the right - I started with Bay Bloor Radio! Really though, you guys are great.

Jay - I know you like maggies too - as do I and they are my current speaker of choice - yes, I've heard the Yvettes' at my primary dealer, and as compared to the maggie 3.7i's, better defined and much better bass overall, greater upper midrange and higer frequency detail, I actually, heard stuff I haven't heard before in a recording that I've used for a reference seemingly forever - - - BUT - - - I couldn't shake the coherency thing - couldn't shake that it seemed like I was hearing woofer, midrange, tweeter "drivers" (I'm exaggerating a bit to define my point) and yep, could have been the set up, maybe the Yvette's weren't broken in all the way, whatever the reason, I couldn't shake it - and that as opposed to the maggies that sound seamless, at least to me, scary in their coherency, amazing in my opinion - The Wilson's are close to 4 times the money but at least for me, based on that listening session and, just saying to clarify my conviction, "I wouldn't trade them straight up" - I don't know how in the past few years Magnepan has completely overcome this coherency thing, again, subjective unto me - not looking to debate and yes, I think and thought at the time that the Yvetts were awesome in every other way, so detailed with bass to die for. Thanks for posting this vid, enjoyed and appreciate it.

Hello there, how about if you try a cool experiment with these super expensive speakers. My guess is that Adrian is the store owner, so what if you borrow from the store a pair of Wilsons (demo models) and do different tests at each of your own homes, using your own spaces and acoustic conditions, then come back and comment with the results. Should be interesting to see if you still think the same about the speakers, or even more inclined to get them (like Jay was aspiring). Maybe do a video series, to show how the speakers look at normal houses and limited spaces. Cheers.

Icannot speak from own experience regarding the two models you mentioned (own myself the MAXX) but I‘d say the difference is smaller than the brochure says. If you set your speakers up correctly and find very good synergy with your cables and components it matters probably MUCH more than changing to the newer, slightly facelifted model. IMHO

There are so many variables with regards to the different available combinations.Recordings, listening room, equipment matching and taste all come into play. This is true regardless of budget,so it's possible spend alot and still be disappointed, even though you may well pay for some very good engineering. This is where a good dealer comes into it's own, where you can play with different options. It's a shame that there are fewer of them now and the lure of multi room/lifestyle type products now appear to be the order of the day for many.

oliver beard , Man you said a mouthful here. I’m lucky to have a great dealer, who listens and won’t tell you what the best is, he prefers to let you hear and judge for yourself. My dealer will guide you there, but as he always says you and you alone must make that final decision because you will be the only one living with the system. Because I have built a relationship with him I can go in and audition what I want, no credit card required, but I have earned his respect and I have spent a small fortune in his shop. My dealer has special events at his store and guest like people from Audioquest, Richard Vandersteen and the guy from Musical Surroundings and AMG turntables-Garth Lereer, who will be in on the 20th of this month to introduce a new line of AMG turntables and there will be specialty imported beers and food and plenty of listening. He has done stuff like this at other places and one time he did this at a bar with equipment brought from the store in an area of the bar where live bands play and it was awesome. The system sounded so good in that room that people were clapping between the vinyl tracks. Heck I bought the amp and preamp from that event. When you have a good local dealer don’t go in to just waste their time by just asking questions, spend some money to keep him in business and keep the community and his expertise going.

The opinions expressed are very interesting. I've admired Wilson since auditioning a pair of WATT PUPPY'5 in the late 90's with Spectral electronics. I've since purchased a pair of used series 7's and enjoy them almost daily. However, my last impression at the audio conventions has been that they've recently diluted that "special" Wilson signature with every subsequent model introduction. Dunno if anyone feels the same way, but people who own early production speakers seem to stay with them seemingly fahevah...

Funny they say they sound American when most the drivers are made in Denmark. Either way I found them to have a very narrow sweet spot. The voicing in that spot is so locked in which is difficult to explain. They work on time delay of the drivers and it makes a huge difference to the clarity of every note. They would be on the top of my wanted list for sure.

It's too bad that Wilson audio have increased their prices so much in the last decade. I really like their sound, but when I think of upgrading to the equivalent of a watt puppy, with the Sasha DAW, it deflates me. Will probably edition some high-end Focals soon. Or something else for that matter, as good as the Wilson audio speakers are, I just don't think they're worth the money they ask. Like everything else made in the USA, it's big it's bulky and it's heavy... very little visual finesse. It's not masculine it just lacks good design. Admittedly their sound is great but it should be for the amount that you have to pay for each series.

Maybe it’s the mid bass, but something isn’t right. Most modern jazz and electronic music sounds great, but for some reason, MY music, classic rock, blues, etc, just doesn’t cut it. Jeff Beck, Stones, Allman Bro’s, et al, hurt my ears. (As I type this I hear the guys slamming the WP 5). I listened to a $54k pair of Wilson’s, and was thankful my ears could not seem to appreciate them. Perhaps Wilson’s just aren’t for me. I auditioned a pair of Klipsch Cornwall IV, and they are on order to replace my WP 5s.

@@williek5696 I finally did replace my Wilson Sophia's with the Focal Sopra 3's. Using my Wilsons as back channel speakers. I cannot believe how incredibly great the Beryllium tweeters are. (admittedly some like them and some don't) but for me it feels as if I have been missing all the highs for a few decades. I tried listening to the Sasha DAW's I just didn't get the same honesty from them. (but I still think they are freaking great speakers)... and I almost did pull the trigger on a pair. But in the end the Sopra 3's won out. Wilson's maybe "musical" but they just don't seem as accurate or honest to me. In the end I actually wish I ended up splurging on something a little more expensive in the Focal Utopia line but I am thoroughly enjoying the Sopra 3's now. And I am about to pull the trigger on a pair of Bryston monoblocks with a PS Audio BHK pre. (I think)

I don’t know about the later Wilson speakers, but why the material they choose deteriorated really fast and really bad in their 90’s and 20’s speakers…it’s unbelievable if you see those ugly use Wilson speakers!

Not the most important factor but still a factor: I think Wilson speakers are one of the least pleasing speakers to look at. I think the Sonus Faber are more attractive as are speakers like Vivid, and Dynaudio etc. The Yvettes, Sashas, Alexxias are so big and boxy appearing.

Great video guys. I really enjoy your reviews. As to Wilson speakers I’m not a fan. While living in Seattle I heard the Wilson WAMM demonstrated for me with Krell amps and transparent cables at a high end audio store. Maybe it was the room set up or the selection of music but they just didn’t do it for me. I like “warm” amp and “warm” speakers. My set up is McIntosh amp and Martin Logan speakers with Kimber cables. I only play classical music on my system and I find classical music on Wilson speakers too “clean”. When playing Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 aka The Leningrad Symphony on those Wilson WAMM speakers there was no angst. Too clean too clear. It like listening to the Beatles Sargent Peppers album on CD instead of LP. It just doesn’t work. Just doesn’t sound the way the composer meant for the music to be played. It’s like with pianos there are Steinway people and then there are Bosendorfer. The Bösendorfer gives you warmth, richness and depth when played. I’m not a fan of the Steinway no warmth, depth and no angst. I get a warmth, richness and depth from my Martin Logans speakers I don’t hear on the WAMMs. Maybe is my combination of amp and speakers that works but it works for me. My other issue is purely aesthetics. Wilson speakers are BUTT UGLY. Those WAMM speakers need 100 square feet of space to sit in just to breath. They suck all the oxygen out of the room unless the room is huge. Just my thoughts .. I’ll put my McIntosh, Martin Logans and Kimbers up against any equipment for playing classical music. One other thought separate from this, the most important piece of equipment in your set up are your CABLES. I don’t care how expensive/great your amps and speakers are if you have bad/sub par cables your equipment will sound bad. Keep bringing the great vids/reviews.

Hi the electronic pairing and room acoustic can affect the sound quite a bit. For reference, I auditioned sabrina and Yvette in a nicely treated room and both sound amazing, out of this world (I am still drooling after a year). I also auditioned the most expensive wilson Alex in a warehouse type dealer location (totally untreated and super high ceiling) and despite costing over 10x the price of sabrina, and paired with expensive dagostino amps, it sounded worse than my Bowers Wilkins 805s bookshelf speakers at home. I highly recommend you to find a good location to audition speakers in general.

It's all down to preference. Some people like neutral sound, some people like colored sound. You happen to fall in the latter category.

Honest description. If you want a good speaker from Wilson you need to spend at least 80.000 US dollar because all models below are a let down. No thanks.

That turntable can be matched for 2,000 on a Technics, if that. Total audiophile garbage. Unbelievable suckers you are if you believe that shits necessary. It's not gym equipment, it just needs to spin a record - and any resonance is unavoidable past 3,000 tops of engineering. Japanese would laugh at this.

Don’t even like their house sound signature! One of the worst buys in audio. A focal sopra is a much better buy at fraction of the price. Of course it’s my very own opinion. But plenty of other audiophiles will agree with me on this!

Audio is very subjective. I wouldn't get a Focal ever (I did own Focals before). I would choose Wilson Yvettes anyday over Focals (if I had the coin that is lol)
