Willow Creek - Operations: Merchant Special

Ойын-сауық

This video shows operation of the Merchant Special, a high-priority scheduled freight consisting of express reefers (fresh fruits and vegetables) and express boxcars (LCL freight). Schedule running of the train is explained as well as the role that less-than-carload freight played for the railroads and for the Willow Creek.

    @@Vigment13 What I find nice about the layout is how each area has a fair amount of operating interest, but not so much as to make it feel cramped/overdone. I love switching, but not to the point that its painful, so I'm taking notes on all the things I see. I don't see any "flaws" on the Willow Creek, but I do wonder if you have any track cleaning issues on all the tunnel/hidden tracks. Tunnels are great for scene transitions and all, but that's the one scenery aspect that I'm leary about implementing for that reason.

  • @Vigment13

    @@JoeyBPhotography There are indeed flaws; I just don't show them in the videos, or at least they aren't very obvious. :-) I don't have any problems with track cleaning in the tunnels. First, the train room is in a finished room, with excellent HVAC support. I run train regularly, which also helps keep the track clean. Also, all of the tunnels are accessible, especially the very long tunnel behind Bucky's Crossing (20+ feet). The back of the layout behind B.C. is about 15" from the wall and open in the back, so I can access it easily. You need to be able to grab a derailment in a tunnel, so use that same access mechanism to allow for cleaning. Also, the Woodland Scenics track cleaning kit includes a long handled cleaning device that makes it much easier to reach a foot or so inside a tunnel to clean it. Just some thoughts. Thanks again for your feedback!

    Once again a very enjoyable video. The operations and narration of Willow Creek make this layout one of my favorites to watch. I haven't checked your complete video lineup yet so, if my question has been covered already.. I didn't know yet.. Could you do a video on how you made and how you use your car card system. Thank you.. btw.. I've used that bristle trick also. It is great..hardly visible yet perfect for this situation.

  • @Vigment13

    @Vigment13

    Hooray for the bristle trick! Amazing how the bristles disappear once installed, especially on track that's maybe 24" away from you. The car card system is talked about in multiple videos but always from the standpoint of how operators use it during an op session. I started a video a long time ago that talked about implementing the system on the Willow Creek, but never finished it. I'll go back and resurrect that video plan and we'll see what happens. I've had other requests for it, so I guess it's time I get to work. Good suggestion. Hope you enjoy the other videos! Thanks, again, for your feedback.

    Glad you enjoyed the video. None of my videos have shown the actual track plan; perhaps a video that relates the track plan to the physical places on the layout might be a thought. For an intro to the Willow Creek, check out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIaNypWhYrbdc5c.html . And then for enhancements made after that video was filmed: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6WLzNOxqpzImtY.html . Hope these 2 videos help. And let me know if you think a new layout tour video coordinated with the track diagram would be of interest.
