Michael Jordan has no case to be the number 1 NBA player of all time. He has no case to be the number 1 NBA shooting guard of all time. He never had a case to be the number 1 NBA player when he was in the NBA. If you are going to rank players, lots of players are better than him. Lots of players could beat him in a one on one game. He doesn't have the best NBA statistics of all time. He is not the best scorer of all time. He is the most overrated sports star in the history of mankind. Roberto Clemente's very last hit was number 3 thousand. One of the saddest days I remember was New Years Day 1973 when I heard the news that Clemente died in a plane crash the day before. The plane he was in was carrying supplies to help victims of an earthquake. You must be proud to have him as a fellow native of Puerto Rico.

@@canadianfortrump4057 I turned 14 on September 29, 1972, and hoped Roberto had hit his 3,000th hit on my birthday but that night he went 0 for 4 against Tom Seaver, with a close call when Roberto was safe at first after a ground ball to second baseman Ken Boswell, which was eventually declared an error. That final 3,000th hit you mention finally came the next day against Jon Matlack and the whole island celebrated, we couldn't be more proud, an afternoon I will never forget ! 😃 But on New Year's Eve I was in bed with a fever, asleep early that night, so I wasn't informed about the accident of Roberto's plane until the next morning, talk about a sad awakening for a 14 years old Puerto Rican baseball fan, glued to the radio hoping for a miracle, one of the saddest days of my life. 🥺

Otherwise 166 Triples vs 72 (don't forget Forbes Field factor), 4 Batting titles vs one, .317 vs .294, 12 Gold Gloves vs 3, 266 Assists vs 135. Power isn't everything. Roberto was called The Great One for a reason, I don't recall Frank having a similar nickname .

Typical Willie; always the gracious gentleman. When it comes to comparing Clemente and Mays my thought is, I wouldn't want to have to live off of the difference. Both great men on and off the field.

I’m in total agreement with Mr. Mays. Willie is my pick for the all time greatest player. But Roberto Clemente can arguably be considered just as great. In my book, Bobby is a very close 2nd. These two are the very greatest of all time.

Willie was awesome! He was way too humble. He was right, as usual though.

RC was my favorite player when I was a kid. I'm 63 now. I remember that day (New Years Eve) like it was yesterday. We had family over to celebrate. I was upstairs in my room listening to my transistor radio when they said what happened. I cried like a baby.

Watched Clemente many times. He had perfected the art of baseball so thoroughly that all of his movements became beautiful. You couldn't take your eyes off of him. The fans in right field at Forbes Field, where he played most of his career, gave him a standing ovation every inning, just for walking out on the field to his position. He was arrogant, selfless, incredibly fierce, and he had a royalty about him; as if he knew he was better than everyone else. He loved the fans and played for them; both for the people of Puerto Rico and for the working class fans of Pittsburgh, who he loved equally. Almost everything he did was unique, with a style all his own, batting fielding, running, throwing. One of the greats, on and off the field.

Willie Mays too humble and modest. He could with justice name himself😊

The National League outfield starting lineup for the 1966 All Star game had Henry Aaron in left, Willie Mays in center and Roberto Clemente in right. That has to be the greatest All Star team outfield ever put together. Oh yeah, Sandy Koufax was the starting pitcher for the NL. The NL won 2-1 in 10 innings...time of game, two hours and 19 minutes. You could argue that perhaps there might've been better individuals at each position but you'd get one hell of an argument from a lot of people.

I'd give a slight edge to the 1957 NL lineup of: 1957 NL CF Willie Mays, RF Frank Robinson, LF Hank Aaron as Frank Robinson is a slight upgrade to Clemente. The AL that year had: 1957 AL LF Ted Williams, CF Mickey Mantle, RF Al Kaline which was also in the top five all star outfields of all time. Combined the 1957 All star game easily had the best combined outfield in baseball all star history, and I doubt we'll ever see that again.

I was lucky enough to go with a friend and our dads to a Dodgers/Pirates game in 1972. After that season, he was killed. I was lucky to see him homer in that game. I love the Dodgers and they lost that game 7-4. But seeing Roberto Clemante hit that home run, has made me really appreciate him. more and more, over time.

I clicked on this because I was curious. When Willie Mays said Roberto Clemente, I was elated. I grew up in Pittsburgh and though I wasn't into Sports as much as I am now, I knew who Roberto Clemente was. He was exciting to watch. I got a chance to see him at the old Forbes Field when I went to a game with my brother's scout troop. I still remember the sadness when I heard that he was lost at sea while doing an humanitarian effort for earthquake victims. I live in NYC now and I love how he is revered here by the Hispanic community. We always attend Roberto Clemente day at City Field. 2 years ago, the Pirates were in town to play the Mets. I don't know who the best of all time is, but number 21 will always be my favorite.

@@tonypassaretti Look at Clemente's World Series stats they are far better than Robinson and Mays. Aaron has comparable world series stats to Clemente but Clemente had the far better glove and arm. Out of the four Clemente had by far the best arm, better than Mays. That's why he played right field where the best outfield arm plays. Also out of the 4 Clemente had the highest career average.

I saw Mays throw a strike from CF to home plate, made it look easy. That was back in about 1958 or so. And very gracious of him, not to answer the interviewer's question by claiming that he was the best -- out of place in today's world, where self-promotion is everything.

Willie Mays was my favorite player growing. That was until I saw Roberto Clemente in what would be his last games in the series vs the Orioles. I could not wait to follow him in the next year. Alas. Not to be. Great man!

Clemente was the best I ever saw play the game. I didn't have the chance to see Mays at the height of his talents.

As a lifelong Dodger fan it hurts but… I have to admit, I never saw any player better than Willie Mays. He was the epitome of the greatest 5 tool player.

You remember the cartoon, The Say Hay Kid. Not only was he a great ball player but a fine human being.

I go back to the greats of the past also. Early on, a lot of players hit .400, up to Hornsby's .424. But the defenses weren't anywhere near as good as what they are now, and team managers let their best pitchers slog on when they were having a bad day (like, who have I got any better?). Hitters play more games than pitchers, so I would have to pick at hitter. My choice is Ted Williams. He missed several years during WWII, and even more during the Korean war. He hit well over .300 his last year, and a home run to finish the last game.

Mickey Mantle said Aaron was the best player he ever saw (and Henry was my favorite). Mays was probably the greatest of his generation. Clemente was a stud. I throughly enjoyed baseball from the late 50’s into the 70’s. Toss in Mantle, Ted Williams among many others and what a great game back then. 2 hours, vs 3.5 hours! Besides the Milwaukee Braves, I was a fan of the Tigers and particularly Kaline. Dude had an arm almost as good as Clemente’s.

i would take kaline over clemente any day of the week. kaline's arm was better than clemente. clemente is over-rated. so is mays. if you are asking about the most powerful arm, then i would say clemente. but if you want to throw the runner out, kaline is hands down. clemente wasnt anywhere near as accurate as kaline was. most of the time kaline would one-hop the ball to the catcher, making it easier for the catcher. kaline was one of the most consistent players around. and clemente was certainly not as good a fielder as kaline. no one was as good a right fielder as mr kaline was. clemente became better AFTER HE DIED. i dont dislike him. he was probably a great man. some people, for whatever reason, stay popular with later generations. willie mays was not the best hitter on the giants. that honor goes to willie mccovey. he was the most feared hitter in baseball for quite a few years. having mccovey hit behind you was a big advantage for mays. the pitcher has to pitch to mays. a lot of pitchers would simply walk mccovey, if he didnt swing at any bad pitches.

@@Michael-hq1iq you must not have read what i wrote. if you wanted to throw the runner out, kaline was your best bet. he was accurate to the nth degree. clemente was powerful, but nowhere near as accurate. i dont have as much of a memory of mays' arm. he was a showboat on the field. made everything look more difficult than it really was.

If you are the GOAT you have to do what no one else has done. You have to be all around the best. What incredible names being mentioned. I can't remember a player who was just great on and off the field the way Clemente was. But the GOAT is the guy known as the Sultan of Swat and his gaudy World Series ERA.

Roberto Clemente was more than the greatest baseball player ever, much more, way much more and I still do not understand why is number 21 is still used in the MLB. Shame on those players who still wear that number.

For the time period over their two overlapping careers, I believe Clemente had the highest batting average in baseball. It was before my time, but I love reading about baseball history.

Willie Mays has always been my #1 favorite MLB player of all time. Roberto Clemente would definitely make my top 10 list of all time greatest players.

Clemente was fun to watch in the outfield. He liked to make basket catches down around his knees, just for the fun of it. He had a cannon for an arm and threw out a lot of baserunners. Another way he stood out was by hitting very hard line drives straight back at the pitcher. It was dangerous to pitch against him. Sadly Roberto died in a plane crash at age 38 while delivering disaster relief supplies to Central America. RIP Roberto.

No need to denigrate Willie or the Babe. If you're comparing me to either guy, I've done very well for myself. The Bambino would've loved Willie.

Clemente was amazing. But growing up watching Willie, gotta say he was everything Clemente was, but with the home run power. If he hadn’t juiced up, I think Barry Bonds (who, even as a Giants fan, I could not stand) would eclipse Willie, but with the juice, we’ll never know.

All "who was the greatest" arguments depend on what your metrics are. Mays was one of the best all around players ever. I would put him second only to Ruth among position players. Clemente was a great player, Top 50 all-time, but I think Willie was being a bit generous in this interview.

In 1955, The Pirates paid $4,000 for the rights to Clemente. 12GG, 4 batting titles, and 2 World Series wins later...

Clemente is certainly one of the all-time greats. He was a joy to watch. However, Willie is incorrect when he tells us that Roberto will hit you 25 home runs per season. Roberto reached that total ONCE during his illustrious career, in 1966 with 29. In fact, during his 18-year career, Clemente reached 20 home runs, THREE times (23, 23, 29). He averaged 13.33 home runs per season (240 home runs in 18 years).

Roberto played in "Yellowstone Park" Forbes Field 365 FT Left , 407 Left Center, 457 Centerfield. He adapted his hitting to line drives in the alleys. He is still the only hitter I know of who cleared the top of the Scoreboard at Wrighley Field.

These conversations regarding the GOATs in professional sports are so colored by the prejudices of the people being asked that they have no value. Mays thinks Clemente was the greatest he ever saw ... for most of his career he was regarded as the third best RFer in the NL behind Aaron and Frank Robinson. He only won one MVP in his car- eer for a reason.

Yogi WAS a great athlete. He was actually a speedy runner, hit for both average & power, and struck out as seldom as Tony Gwynn. He was good enough, in his mid 30s, to start in left field in 1960 and 1961. For two pennant winners and one World Series winner.

Frank Robinson was far better than Clemente! Much more power and runs produced! Robinson was one of the most underrated players in baseball history!

I'm just saying Pete is the best. Bar none. When he went to Philadelphia to play for the Phillies, the players learned what it took to win a world series. @@joecron5745 Rose started several all-star game because he was a great leadoff hitter. The fact that he played different positions doesn't necessarily make him a great defensive player. They basically needed him in the lineup and there was no DH. Rose has more hits than any other player because he hung on way past his prime just to surpass Ty Cobb's hit record. He was a below average player the last several years of his career. Willie Mays was the greatest all-around player who ever played the game. Mays was a 5 tool player. Rose was just a 1 (possibly 2) tool player. It's as simple as that...

@waveblast2 your right about that. Pete is the hit king, and he was a great defensive player too. Pete is to baseball what Dale Earnhardt is to Nascar racing, the only difference is that they didn't bend the rules for Pete.

As a lifelong Dodger fan it hurts but… I have to admit, I never saw any player better than Willie Mays. He was the epitome of the greatest 5 tool player.

What's interesting is Clemente Sturgill and Alou played for the Pirates in the Outfield and the Pirates never won a World Series
