It was very old school...kind of like copying Evert but not great technique. Compare to Mary Pierce (also modelled on Evert)...the shoulders and hips move in unison, producing a balanced shot and more effortless power. Davenport probably had the best backhand of that generation (as well as Venus)...perfect timing and flawless technique. Jennifer's forehand was excellent though and I think her steady backhand was a weapon combined with the powerful forehand.

it's crazy that towards the end of the second set when Capriati was having her comeback, the crowd was going nuts yet it was Capriati who had 3 slams to Serena's 1 at this stage. It was Capriati who won the last slam in Australia. And it was Capriati who had won the first set of this match so why were they so for her to win? Usually they go for the underdog and the one who hasn't already won a set so the match will go three. It can only be a race thing

There's something about Serena, similar to Djokovic, that people just don't like and it can't be brought back to race (Serena) or nationality (Djokovic) only. Let me try to sample what most of my family thinks about both these players. Serena: fake, arrogant, lack of class, makes it too much about power in her game Djokovic: boring to watch, not as talented as Fedal, no magic in his game.

I'd love to see highlights of Myskina's drubbing of Capriati in the 2004 FO Semi. That was something else. That is taking advantage of good fortune if I've ever seen it. And of the match when she saved match point against Kuznetsova earlier in the tournament. It was such a shame Myskina let Henin off the hook at the Olympics that year and missed out on a medal

  • @regulusarcturus

I don’t think it was good fortune. Myskina was a consistent top 10 player in 2002 and 2003 before winning her Slam at the age of 22 and she beat Molik, Kuznetsova, Venus, Capriati and Dementieva to win the title while seeded #6. Injuries prevented her from going further in her career, not lack of talent. She was physically done by 25 and retired very young. She had a winning record against all of her Russian contemporaries at the time (3-2 vs Sharapova, 4-2 vs Kuznetsova, 5-1 against Safina, 3-1 vs Zvonareva, 9-6 vs Dementieva, 3-2 vs Petrova, etc.)

Mind you I would have loved to see her get over the line in that epic semi of the Olympics that year over Henin. That was heartbreaking

Capriati was NEVER winning Wimbledon 2001. Venus in the final would have destroyed her on grass, particularly when she is 3-0 vs Capriati on hard courts, where Capriati's chances are far higher than they would be vs Venus on grass. In fact with Venus and Davenport playing in the other semi, I guaranteed Capriati would never win the title if she won the semi vs young Henin, no matter who she played, as both Venus and Davenport are certain to beat her on grass.
