remarkable volume from 6 musicians, that opening chorus was so huge it was nearly comparable to the studio recording

"Aan de Amsterdamse grachten" (The Canals Of Amsterdam), a classic Dutch 'folk'song which is also always performed in the finale of every Prinsengrachtconcert. Quite a magical moment when the whole audience joins in.
Did it seem a tad rushed? Just a bit.

A lot of orchestras like to open performances with fanfares so it's not out of place at all

BlueYammer Agreed. It was a bit bottomless. Instead of two trombones, I think one bass trombone would’ve been a better way to get that low end power this piece deserves.
