William Byrd - The Third Galliard (flemish virginal) Manuscript/ Score video

Музыка

The score is from My Lady Nevell's Book, the virginal is after Grouwels and the technique used is basically from Santa Maria's treatise. Know that there is a pavan that precedes this Galliard that was left out of the recording. #renaissance #keyboard #byrd

What is a "Galliard"? What a Flemish?

A galliard was originally a lively dance in triple time that experienced its heyday in Europe 500 years ago. A keyboard galliard like this one was not danced to but nevertheless was based on the rhythmic character that the dance exhibited. “Flemish” refers to where the historical instrument the one in the video is based on originated, sometimes referred to as “Flanders”. It’s basically part of current-day Belgium from what I understand, and was an epicenter of harpsichord-building in the 16th and early 17th centuries
