what strikes me about Blake is the singular and astonishing congruence of the inner man in terms of the development of his spirituality and his soul; on top of that is the fact that here is a man situated as you well point out with a singular lack of formal traditional education, on the one hand, and on the other, a man who has been preoccupied with the sacred writings, particularly judeochristian, with a keen desire to in a sense proclaim what he learned therefrom, what he had seen and heard from within, with a great trait of consistency, perseverance, skill, originality; to attain the vision and contemplative and prophetic gifts he must have had a very well formed faith that will be of vital importance in his biographical development. his mind and spirituality had no formal formation; he indeed reacted against the classical art school training; he has had some profound early encounters with the divine and with nature; his formation seems to have seeded from early contemplative experience; an extraordinary character; to write at that age that 'the true man is the poetic genius' is evidence of this profound early formation, of the unique harmony between his soul and spirit; i heard somewhere that he was hermetic and this solitary trait is a clue also to his gifts; when we look at a poet like William Cullen Bryant we see again this deep closeness to nature, this deep love of and connection with the spirituality of mother nature; both Bryant and Blake have very profound Christological roots to their characters but also unique love of solitude and nature; looking at his palettes Blake may have been influenced in his imaginitive use of colour by such exponents of art as Goethe. Spiritualist painters among whom i would regard Blake as brilliant have a unique sense of the inner world that naturalists painters sometimes lack; Blake has an instiinctive love for transparency and light and hence his love of ink and watercolour; his poetry is also expressive of a mind and spirit that are not only at peace but also at war, indeed the victories he achieved came no doubt through these human struggles; he has a rare gift of character traits in these respects, of deep inner language fluency in the realms of the spirit world, conjoined to an intuitive understanding of and tenacious love for metaphysics, the way of Grace and nature, with the precious ability to imagine and to express himself freely artistically in ink and colour; how many artists can do this?
