William Blake, Songs of Innocence and Experience
William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience, and with it the idea of 'contrary states of the human soul' are the consquences of Rousseau's view of human nature.
We are born innocent, and then are corrupted by society. From the vantage of Christian theology it is a heresy associated with a monk called Pelagius.
This view of fundamental human goodness is a standard view of the Enlightenment after Rousseau. So is the account of 'the fall' through society.
What is novel is the Romantics' account of redemption: we recover our lost innocence by means of what Blake and his fellow Romantics call 'the imagination'.

Well solving the problem of murder from the aspect of scale is literally all we are capable of. Do you think people who want to ban guns really believe they are ending all forms of murder? Or is that just a lazy straw man that stands in for the absence of any reasonable counter argument?

Not true. Murder is the taking of the life of an individual, who bears the image of God. Large numbers are only persuasive to people who think of people as ‘populations’.

@@LitProf People who are not persuaded by populations are not living in reality. People exist in populations, that’s an undeniable fact. People are social creatures that evolved in groups, that’s a fact.
