Willem Dafoe on his “classic pirate accent” in the psychological thriller The Lighthouse | TIFF 2019
We chatted with Willem Dafoe about his haunting role as a grizzled ‘wickie’ who loves to spin a nautical yarn in The Lighthouse. Not only did he enjoy shooting this deliciously creepy tale in Nova Scotia, he says he feels “almost Canadian.”

Just noticed the interview is much better without hearing the interviewer
"You know, I'm something of a Lighthouse Keeper myself."
Willem Dafoe seems so genuinely proud of his role and performance in this film. I can't wait to see it, it's killing me that I can't see it till early next year.
For anyone watching this who doesn't know who Robert Newton is, he played Long John Silver in Disney's 1950 live action movie of Treasure Island. He pretty much single handedly invented the pirate accent as we know it in movies. Geoffrey Rush did the same kind of thing in Pirates of the Caribbean.
he seems to be a nice person
He never really ages, this could be a promo for Platoon and I would believe it.
I love his analysis on Thomas Wake character and why he chose the life of being a lighthouse keeper above a normal life. The introduction of Winslow was seen as a threat in Wakes perspective. As a person who values their solitude and way of living I can relate to that wholeheartedly. Anyone who comes strutting in and wanting a piece of something I've kept as a treasure for personal reasons, I shall see that person as a threat too.
his accent was so good i thought it was dubbed over by a voice actor
Yer fond of me lobster ain't ye?
I live in said Dorset and my neighbor sounds just like Willem in the movie!
Love the West Country love in
I got to admit it was hard understanding what the two light keepers were saying cause of the heavy accent, so I guess I ll have to watch it again with subtitles
1st!
I'm sorry, I can't! XD
Is his character meant to be english?
Robert Newton. Who stole nearly every scene he was in.
He sounds more like an Irishman - me luvver.
