Will Using The Rear Brake Help You Make Those Turns From A Stop? Yes!

Фильм және анимация

Hello KZreadrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. In this video I discuss the importance of using the rear brake while making right / left turns from a stop. Using the rear brake properly, along with other techniques will almost guarantee a successful turn.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Joe Lucas Hello professor, I am a 68 year old student of your channel. With the approval of my loving wife of 35 years purchased a 2019 Road King in June. Passed the rider safety course in July and watched just about every practice session you have put out. Only problem is now I can’t pass up pulling into every available parking lot to practice! Thank you for sharing your life experience’s and for your service in the NYPD.

The mantra in every motorcycle skills video I’ve seen is “clutch control.” That’s still extremely important of course. But what was a revelation to me was keeping the throttle loaded and fixed - and even keeping the clutch position fixed in the friction zone, a rider can precisely moderate speed and control just with the rear break. Most skills videos just mention rear brake as a lesser component for some stability, but this gives me a new perspective and tool in my toolbox for improved confidence at slow speeds. Thanks Robert!

I haven’t been on a Harley in 30 years. I bought a ‘16 FLHTK and it’s home in the garage. Bought some cones. 15 feet apart and it’s tough to do. I have a private community and 7-12 mph in and out and in circular driveway wide turns. I will practice again. I watched many videos and I will concentrate more on rear brake and throttle control and friction zone.

I'm late for the party on this vid, but I surely enjoyed it never the less. I watch you, sir, along with Jerry Palladino, MC Rider, and MotoJitsu. I call it the "College of Rider Knowledge". And after class, I go to church. The church parking lot, that is. Today, my friend David joined me for church service on his Suzuki M90. David has many, many more miles in the saddle than I do, but today I got to school him a bit on slow speed maneuvers, as in; "Stay away from that front brake!" "Head and eyes!" "Look ahead, not down!", and so on. Overall, he did well because he listened and it was FUN! We'll be going to church together as often as schedules permit, and hopefully down to practice with you next year. PRACTICE IS FUN!😎

I've been looking at lots of bikes and will probably go with that or the 750 since they weigh the same. I already bought some cones so when I make my purchase I can practice in the parking lot. I learned something today as far as using that rear brake only in slow riding . Thank you again. When I saw the zip code I thought it looked familiar. Then when I heard Sav'h I knew. I'm a new subscriber, and I can tell you folks that he isn't lying about being a preloader. It is a very important skill to master. I too like Robert and Jerry have been thru police motor school. I'm still on the job unlike them, but coming to the end of it with 25 years in and 52 years old. I still ride for the Dept. (I'm in DC) but not full time given my present duties. I only get to ride for special events mainly now such as July 4th, demonstrations, and other events. In order to stay certified to ride the dept. motors, I have to go thru a yearly recertification course and test. In fact I have to do my yearly recertification and the end of May for 3 days. I was thinking about it and decided to see what people taught on KZread. This and the Ride like a Pro channel are good. BTW folks these techniques work with ANY motorcycle, for instance, my personal bike is not a Harley, it is a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe and I assure you, it applies.

THANK YOU! DON'T EVER CHANGE you amazing human! Before I found you I'd start off watching youtubers teaching motorcycle skills and then before I know it.... The channel becomes full of videos that make fun of others who don't have the skill. Or they share videos of horrible crashes and incidence that happen on bikes. I can't handle that kind of fear based teaching. So I just stopped watching...then when uploading my own video here, you came across my suggested list. I love how positive yet firm you are with your teaching. I have 2 bikes a sportster 883 converted to a 1200 and last yr my husband and I both bought cruisers. Mine is a hard candy gold fleck street glide. My first outing on the bike I almost bit the dust on a bumpy dirt parking lot. Then a while later I slowly tipped over while pulling into a parking spot... because I was never taught about the touchy front brake. In addition to that, I kept telling my husband the pull on the clutch wasn't right for me, it engaged too far out for me to feel like I had control. Well we fixed the clutch issue, it's awesome to have control lol but the ONLY reason I decided to put the money into changing my clutch pull was finding your videos. Before that, I was ready to give up. I had even purchased an online course a few days after I bought the bike and it was not helpful. I started watching your videos and it all made sense. Some how you made me feel like "I can do this!" I'm finally not terrified of my bike and though I still need tons more practice in the parking lot... I really enjoy it now! THANK YOU. PS I've been a pole dance instructor (online) for 13 yrs now and I wanted to take time to write to you because, students behind the screen can often forget to let you know how much you've helped them.

As someone who has been riding since youth, I am beyond impressed with this gentleman's skills and enthusiasm to make you a better and safer rider. It was well worth "the watch" as there are some valuable takeaways here. Also, I am awestruck that anyone in their right mind would down vote such an awesome video... Thank you sir for paying it forward and keep up the awesome work!

all the videos and lessons I've watched on turns and u-turns for years and noboddy has given me the valuable information that you have here about the brakes, preloading and clutch, trust and believe, power to the rear wheel. Every rider should be taught this information and I'm sure alot won't get it.Thanks Robert Simmons, you changed my riding abilities and I owe you big time!!!!!!!!!!!! And thank your wife for helping you do what you do.

Love the shirt! I am glad I started watching your videos. I was a little confused about preloading as another KZreadr mentioned preloading the front brake. I tried it on my last ride and it didn’t feel right. I could have sworn that my beginner motor instructors 18 years ago repeatedly said “do not cover the front brake!” Anyhow, I will practice in my head and out on a parking lot as much as I can. Thank you so much!

You are such a great teacher. Just bought a 1999 Road King and I just love this bike. Your slow riding video is fantastic. First gear, start preload and pick your foot up. Would love to meet you and practice with you. Always wanted a bike and you make me feel comfortable getting on my bike. Thank you Frank

Hey Rob, as always you have stellar advice. I was in Cave Creek, AZ today hanging out at the Roadhouse Bar and it was absolutely amazing to watch all the bikes come in & leaving and duck walking in and around the parking lot. You could really see who had control and who were not in control. Keep up the great video!!

Thank you very much! I've stated this before, PRELOADERS will look at non PRELOADERS much differently now. Not in a negative way. But more so like an instructional way. They remember that used to be them and they want to share the knowledge. Each one, teach one. Great job Pete!😄👍🏾
