Been using RADAR and Sound Devices conversion (alongside other brands high- and lower-end) and that price point definitely makes a difference - a subtle but sonically-important difference, often to do with the surrounding circuitry especially the power supply. It's a good thing to know the converters are not the weak link. Great advice Streaky and thanks for all the videos and insight : D

@@proverbalizer as we speak I am testing out the Antelope Zen Go. Upgrade after my first interface, the focusrite 2i2. Man the cleanness, and tight sound. Such an improvement. The transients, the depth, the stereo image and just overal way more clarity. This is just when playing back music. Only reason I'm here is to see what would be an even bigger upgrade.

I recently Bought an Sennheiser HDV820 for my HD800s, but when i A B to my RME Fireface UCX i dont listen to my RME anymore. The Sennheiser DAC is Amazing compared to the RME even i was always very very happy. The RME sound thin, not great with dynamics, boomy bass, overhyped highs, stereo image not so good, and not flat sounding compared to the fully Analog sounding HDV820. Really big difference that i did not expect! The Sennheiser is my pre-amp for my Genelec system. I use fireface for outboard gear but need to compensate for it flaws i never realized it had. Cheers.

I know this is an older vid, but what I’m curious about is clocks on good sounding converters and their impact? I have a antelope Orion and older Apogee AD/DAX’s and and a PSX100. I use the clock form the Antelope for all. Would having a different clock give me another option for sounds? I’ve notice when I have the PSX100 (board capture feed) salved to the Antelope its almost softer and smooth where the internal PSX100 is more....Sharp/crisp direct. I have also used the different clock master when mastering to find a better fit to the music. So my question is if I got a 3rd part clock, what would you suggest as a different color? Something to counter the Antelope and Apogee’s. Thanks for your time and happy new year.

So I was traveling with a mini mobile studio set-up, making beats and mixing. Half the time I didn't even hook up my interface cause a) I wasn't recording audio and b) I didn't have speakers, just headphones. I wonder if the sound quality of the headphones plugged directly into my macbook was worse than the quality plugged into my beringer 404hd interface and was therefore holding me back? I didn't even think about it. I did wonder if the interface has any effect on avoiding cpu overloads near the end of the mixing process

When I turn the mic down a little it starts to sound better, but I can’t hear it at all in my headphones. There are countless “wonky” sounding frequencies in eq on any mic I use. Hi Streaky, question: how do you rate Universal audio vs Apogee Symphony!!?? also how does the converter really matter if in the box vs not in the box? (I understand that the D to A is used when running audio through speakers but the A to D hardly used unless recording via a mic and also when we bounce / print a final mix , is it correct that we dont use the converters because digital is being bounced as digital (so the bounce happens through sound card on laptop ?) 2) another layer to this is that these days speakers like ADAM AUDIO s3V and HEDD mk 2 all have a DSP chip and thus have converters in the speaker, so even if you the best audio interface, the audio is being converted D to A by the new age DSP speakers....

Simple : does not improve sound you are listening by a ton, but you will know what you listening thus you will have consistent mixes.

I think it is also important that the interface has good drivers. There is nothing worse than having a sound break up every now and then or just dragging the whole system down.

If you can only afford a $500 dollar interface, well, can you get nice sounding mixes out of them, or are you saying it's pointless until you get up into the $2,000 range? Just starting out my home studio. I have a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6, but need more ins/outs, so, planning to upgrade to the Focusrite 18/20 - or am I wasting my time? I think I got the message, "get the best you can afford with the ins/outs you need," but it also seemed like you were saying I'll never get proper, pro-sounding mixes at the "beginners" stage. $500 is the best I can do right now. Can I make money, can I charge clients, with a Focusrite?

Here we go again.Streaky is discouraging new studio Enthusiasts like he has always done.I watched him from a few years ago where he was saying things like Digital is not good and only Analogue is good.Well People like Dave Pensado,Graham Cochrane and Ian Sherpard kept encouraging us all and look at me now i make a leaving through my studio which started off at 100% Digital and now 80% digital & 20% Analogue.People! keep doing what you can do with what ever tools you have.Build up a Clients list and the rest of upgrades will Follow.Yes we all need the nicer Tools, but that does not mean we cannot put out good work in the meantime. Its also What you do with whatever tools you have that will get you ahead.Sorry Streaky i had to put you on the lime light.Hopefully you will not delete my post.

Silent Wagon Your post kind of reflects my thinking so far. I have modest acoustic treatment in the form of 2" acoustic panels and some DIY bass traps. My monitors are well-reviewed $300 JBLs. So I'm kind of at a "beginner" stage with all three. But I aspire to create excellent sounding music, and would hate to think that is an unrealistic aspiration given my budget constraints. In other words, I *am* going as high end as I can right now, which is what Streaky says at the end here.

Marcus Bornold I don’t know, I’m using one and was pretty confident about it. Then I bought the Sennheiser 800s pro’s - absolutely phenomenal headphones, and it showed me everything wrong with my audient. I remember first trying these headphones out in my mentors studio and being amazed by the range of tone. I noticed that the audient naturally makes the low ends muddy. It slightly blurrs the lines from about 200-500 and doesn’t have the best low end response. Also a tad boxy. I’m not complaining much because it’s a great bang for buck, but spending 1300 quid on headphones really showed me that it was worth upgrading my converter too.

A great mix might not make a record, but a bad mix can certainly limit a records potential. It's true that a record can sometimes do well despite a less than perfect mix, but to imply that it simply doesn't matter towards a songs success or how a song connects with people is a pretty big leap. Same as how a sub par performance of a song will make a huge difference to how it makes people feel. It all makes a difference.

I would run from anything Antelope Audio. Check the forums and you will see a lot of people having issues and turn-around time with customer support is very slow. Had a friend go through multiple issues with his and just gave up. There's a reason even Sweetwater Sound dropped their line of products.
