Not sure if this is gonna work or not but I ended up picking up a small pellet stove for my big automotive garage workshop!
In this video we install the pellet stove/heater with a stovepipe kit, throw some bags of pellets in it and see if it's enough to heat my 1600sqft shop in the middle of winter!

Trev, I'm pretty positive you need to heat insulate the wall behind the stove. Up here in Montreal, QC, code doesn't even allow any kind of heat near spray foam and all spray foam needs to be covered with some fire resistant material like drywall. Maybe the code is not that restrictive in Colorado, but it would be a shame to have a silly accident happen. Specially that spray foam burns like a b*tch.

Where I live in BC it would need 2 layers of 5/8 fire rated drywall , fire tape and a spray on fire retardant . And that deck above would have to be 2 by 6 lumber for the floor . But Canada is way different than the US in a lot of ways , the main thing being Democracy verses socialism .

Hey Trevor, I run a company consulting and inspecting spray foam insulation, you need to cut the spray foam back at least 3 inches from around the pipe and replace it with a roxul type insulation, you've got a significant fire hazard they way it is setup. In your application you should also cover the insulation behind the stove with type X fire rated drywall or similar. If not, I'd be surprised if insurance will cover you in the event of a fire.

I live in Colorado and am heating my 60x40 shop with a pellet stove. Takes a bit for it to get the heat going; usually supplement with a torpedo for about 20 min. Added a 72" ceiling fan a few weeks ago and it has been a great addition. Pellets are getting to be an expensive source though

I used to have a big old shop that had a wood stove and it wouldn't keep the shop warm at all and a buddy of mine re-ran the the stove pipe that used to just go straight up from the wood heater and outside but he re-ran the stove pipe from one side all the way to the top center of the shop and then all the way to the other side of the shop then outside and the stove pipe that went all the way across the shop put out alot more heat and kept the shop very warm and I put a few fans blowing the heat down to help too.

The trick with that little heater is to use it as a heat maintainer, but don’t expect it to warm up that big space too quick. When you first turn it on, fire up a couple of propane tank top heaters to get the place quickly up to a comfortable temperature… then that little pellet stove would keep the place comfortable.
