It was an unpleasant smell coming off the transformer.

I remember clearly that half sleeper between track pieces was always breaking off, you ended up with these weird gaps at each track join. The golden memories are flooding back

In the mid-Fifties, I had a Hornby 'Dublo' set, which had pressed tin tracks, with three rails. It was a 'hand-me-down' when I got it, so I must have been quite old, then! My paternal uncle and his wife worked in the Tri-ang factory, in Margate. My aunt spent most of her working life packing model railways into boxes.

Awesome Lawrie - those Tri-ang locos are incredible - so many of them still working today! Thanks for sharing, Sam :)

I was handed down a set from my father. I first seen it run in 1966/7 on his bedroom floor with an uncle. They joined both their sets to make a big one. But as an inquisitive 3/4 year old I was banned from the room as they played with it. I was hooked on model railways from then till this day. Mind you in my teens I became a model dismantler so said railway is is in a suitcase. Steam engine in bits. It's Pullman coaches, British rail coaches class 33 and shunting engine all intact still. I am now mid fifties. And you brought back memories to me. Makes me want to re-assemble the steam loco. Oh the days....

Something I've always found amazing about old HO/00 models is just how rock solid they are - As long as they're cleaned up and given some slight adjustments, they can seemingly run forever. Love those Pullman cars!

Got this set in 69,for xmas as a little boy of 5 yrs of age !!! ...Still got it now,up and running on a triang layout...It started me off on a lifelong interest in toy/model trains....Got a Garden railway now too....Triang..Built to last..Great video ...cheers..Ade

I love those classic Triang Pullman coaches. I saw a chap selling a set of 9 of them on ebay just last week. They went for about £270 in the end.

You have to lube the gears. The sounds of it struggling and grinding is about half of what's making all the noise.

I've discovered your videos since lockdown began and have been thoroughly enjoying them! Ironically... I too have been building my layout up! Loads of second hand track, but with a track rubber and a dremmell it's amazing what you can accomplish!

I love the childish excitement you have about this. :) and now on to the next.

Thing about old model trains, most of 'em are pretty bulletproof as they were made for children (and us big kids at heart) to muck about with. The demographics of the model rail scene have certainly changed a lot since 1966! I'd have a few reservations about modern models still firing up and running decades later.

Preachers's son had a huge setup in their garage when I was a kid'. I hadn't thought of him in years, then one night on the evening news he was on as a spokesman for the US passenger railroad AMTRAC. I received an HO scale set for Christmas as a kid, had it on a 4ft by 8ft sheet of plywood in the living room needless to say that lasted about a month then it was all taken down and stored away. I left home for about 10 years and when I got home it was all gone, it had been given away by my brother! Now you have me thinking about getting another set maybe smaller then the HO

Hi Lawrie, stumbled across this video and realised I have a Tri ang Western D7063 Hymek which has never run since I bought it a number of years ago and has the same type of motor and housing. So I picked it up and had a look at the copper pick up. When I undid that screw I could see the small plate wasn’t in the correct position. I fixed that and it still didn’t run so I looked further and found one of the wires had come away from the soldered joint. I fixed that, cleaned the track and oiled the axles and cleaned the wheels and it ran like a charm. Can’t thank you enough. I must stay tuned, who knows what else I will learn 👍❤️🖍📐🚂

R.751 loco using the X.337 power bogie, the X.04 was the single ended open frame motor. Sold loads in the family Model shop, I was 13 in '66, help out in holidays before taking over and running the shop in '75. Especially the replacement armature, the X.247 used to overheat, at 20.17 freeze play back and you have the classic melted plastic frame where the far brush has overheated and melted its mount. Part no. S.5452 if you can ever find one.... Standard track was solid grey, then Series 3, Super 4 yours and System 6 with lower profile, trouble was the heavier early flanges bounced on the sleepers and lifted the locos so no power.... Brain cells stirring @ 67 yrs old..lol :)

By another coincidence, I got our 1966 BMW R69S going again yesterday. for sanity's sake I replaced the plug caps. It is amazing how capable the technology from the time was, without all the modern electronics.

I know the feeling of getting out something old. Stuck at home I fired up my Wilesco steam engine for the first time in about 20 years.

I knew I recognised that loco number - we had a 2nd hand BR Blue one from Hornby for our layout up the loft! They must have just used the same bodyshell and number when producing it. Even the headcode matched up!

Another great video Lawrie. I still have a triang loco and one coach from when I was a kid. Unfortunately I haven’t any track to run them on. I have a small garden railway to play with though. Spent some time this afternoon doing track maintenance, then a run, great fun. 😊

Found this loco submerged in a fish pond, covered in algae. I cleaned it up and let it dry. For s's and giggles I tested it on some track, it ran. I don't know how, I think it has demon juice lol

Made in Margate. Late in the afternoon of Saturday 30th of July 1966 I was with my Dad in a model railway shop in Ramsgate, Kent,England looking at sets just like this one (although we had TT) Whilst there one of the shop guys told us that England had just won a football match.

Back when I was a toddler, my grandpa gave me a few of his postwar Lionel Trains, just as a small curiosity. I can safely say I still have one of the locomotives, although it’s a shell of its former self.

I HAD ONE OF THOSE ! ! ! ! thankyou for all your videos mate, been very entertaining during lockdown, you seem like a really nice guy and you have been a pleasure to watch :)

My dad and myself were asked many years ago to put on a model railway display for our local church, I spent a good many hours cleaning up some Rovex track (which makes triang track look super detailed) and getting a Rovex Lizzie, Triang 3F and a German 2-6-4T or work. Great stuff!

That was fantastic the old stuff is remarkable as I have a couple of engines from bygone 60s and 70s and still run as good. Every now and then needs a tweak but a who cares they still run, mine run one the new track as well happy days. Camborne central...

More model railway stuff in the pipeline!

It's great how well the robust the old stuff was made. Have a Tri-ang Jinty that still runs after many years of sitting in storage. The old Lionel trains I have found to be indestructible. Fixed up a few that were submerged in a basement flood. Clean the rust off, oil them up, run them for 8 hours at a model railroad open house.

I've still got my uncle's Triang train set with Princess Victoria loco, three slightly short maroon MK1s, track and controller. All from the 60s and all still working fine! Bomb proof stuff.

Definitely sounds like lubrication is in order for that locomotive. A very nice set for its age though. Looking forward to more videos of this nature.

Hi Lawrie- this is great stuff- they don’t make ‘em like that anymore! Have you seen Oscar Paisley’s brilliant channel where he reviews a different Triang Hornby loco or accessory each week? My favourite Triang wagon was the ducking giraffe car - genius! Here’s a challenge for you- can you turn that oval of track into a realistic model railway with scenery just made from items in the house and garden?? Use twigs for trees, small stones for rocks and moss for bushes etc!!

Brilliant! You're right - who doesn't love a class 37? My second loco was (still is) a Hornby 37, but with a ringfield motor. (My first loco was the ubiquitous GWR 0-4-0 tank). I've been dabbling recently in building a new layout. I think many people are.

Needs to be remembered this was 1960's "Train Set" stuff designed mainly for children so had to be built to be used and abused hence the heavyweight track. If you think super 4 track is bad take a look at series 3 track with it's huge sleeper spacing and even worse the original solid grey based "Standard Track" of the early 50's. The track was plated steel, the plating helping to keep rust at bay, until the plating was cleaned with an abrasive after which the bare steel rusted like crazy. The loco motor was not an XO4 but a double worm drive unit derived from other early motor bogies, I have taken dozens of these apart in my time to replace burnt out armatures, they rarely fail to work after a bit of tlc. The early Triang wheel standards were such that the flanges were so deep they would bounce along the sleepers of the next generation system 6 track (and most other manufacturers track)

The R600 is actually a later Triang-Hornby/Hornby Railways Series 6 straight still produced today, and wouldn't have originally been included with the chunkier Super 4 track, which has thicker rails.

Hornby has made a little Ruston 48 model and I bet you guys he will definitely buy one

funny you say that, there was a video on the hornby Ruston pop up in my recommended videos not long after watching this one.

My 1966 Buick special deluxe has apparently jumped a few railroad crossings in its time because I found a bunch of very old tickets that mentioned it running past live trains and street racing from back in the day among a few other things that would get me into some trouble mentioning on here

I have the blue version of this "The Inter City" which was bought for me in the mid 70's I believe, D6830 was the running number with 4 Mk2A Blue/Grey Coaches and simple oval of track...time to go hunting in the loft.

I remember seeing that same style track from kits i bought in america from 1990s

Very cool :) I'm happy to see it running again! Now I have to go out to the garage, and change the EGR valve on my supercharged Jaguar, which will NOT make me so happy :P

The rolling stock on Triang and Hornby trains is hard to diconnect without an uncoupler, which is why uncouplers were included in basic train sets.

Spooky - no word of a lie, I rebuilt my green Triang EE Type 3 D6830 yesterday evening! Mine's a first-edition with plain-ended axles; apart from a stripdown, deep-clean, fettling the pickups and replacing the worn-out motor brushes it needed only new spacer/insulators above the traction magnets - which I laminated from styrene sheet then cut and filed to shape for an invisible repair (the originals crumbled into nothing on removal). Modern lubricants help the performance, I use Woodland Scenics Gear Lube for the geartrain and Lite Oil for bearings and axle ends. I've also fitted Ultrascale wheelsets for compatibility with my Code 75 trackwork; there's a drop-in set available for the pinpoint axle version, with plain axle ends available on request. The version with bogies from the Triang Class 31 as here was developed through pinpoint axle ends, a change to Rail Blue with full yellow ends (still as D6830 with 8H22 headcodes) before a major re-hash with Ringfield power - with power and trailing bogies inherited from the Hornby Class 47 including the bogie sideframe mouldings and a major hike to the ride height! Even that Hornby Ringfield version carries the TOPS version of D6830 - 37 130 - and 8H22 headcodes; that one's also in my nostalgia collection. Outclassed by the later Bachmann, ViTrains and now Accurascale 37s, they still have bags of character and happily if noisily go about their business while invoking pleasant childhood memories. The jury's out on the comparison with the Lima - later Hornby Railroad - 37s; I have a small collection of those undergoing various improvements. Not that I'm a Tractor/Growler/Siphon enthusiast or anything :-)

They will always work, as long as the aged electric Mabuchi motor isn't burned out and the brushes are still intact. Tracks need brushing with steel-wool until they shine. and the contact wheels of the loco also need a good cleaning with steel-wool until polished. to do that you have to remove the entire assembly, find a way to start the motor then with a little steel-wool pad, press it gently on one wheel at a time until shine appears. Sand paper is not good as it removes too much metal, leaving the wheels unevenly matched. Nowadays there are cars with special non conductive brushes pressing on the rails that are occasionally used to keep tracks clean. Normally, if you see sparks from the locomotive, you know why, the tracks are dirty and that dirt sticks on the wheels, causing sparks.

Some serious arcing between the outside straight track and the moving blade on those points when you were trying to get the train out of the siding. The point operating mechanism is definitely beyond its prime.

Super 4 track. Lovely for carpet layouts. But you can't get the darned fishplates any more :-(. I have quite a bit of it - very rusty!

I don't know if you did this, but generally while you have these old locomotives that've been sitting awhile apart, it's a good idea to get some light oil and lube alll the gears and bushings and such. (edit: you did mention this at the end of the video, sorry.) I've also used a product called "goo gone" on wheels and track, usually running the loco at full power with wheels spinning over a damp paper towel with the product on it. You could try the same thing with the contact cleaner or use the orange-oil based stuff.

Great video! I haven't ventured too far into older models but I have a neighbour with locos that are over 60 years old. The things to connect the track are called fishplates if you look into more modern track you can get ones with wires attached, just the fishplates or plastic fishplates.

I would have an old train set rather than a new set any day. Old train sets are so durable, I have a 1940s Trix Twin Railway train set that had been neglected and hadn't run in over 50 years and ran straight out of the bow (minus a little clean and oil).

You would have the uncoupler so you can bring the loco round to the other end of the coaches and run it in the other direction

I've only recently discovered these videos and have dug mine out, never realised it was that old but it is a triang class 37 with an identical inside motor setup, it'll do a few laps of a circle before stopping and after a few minutes will move again weirdly sparking as it goes. 😂 I got mine on ebay just a few years ago cheap intending it as a display piece since it was a very rough runner when it worked. Turns out at some point I brought a blue one too which is Triang as well but that one doesn't work at all right now. Just the engines as that was all I wanted. Any chance of more videos like this, I've enjoyed watching them.

Have you seen the rest of the Lawrie Goes a Little Loco series?

Carefully remove the rails from the bases and soak them in white vinager for a few hours to remove the rust and convert the rust then soak them in water mixed with baking soda and then dry them off with kitchen towel then put them on a baking tray in the oven at 70 degrees c to remove any moisture and give them a squirt of wd40 and wipe off then reassemble on the bases and your track will be not as shiny but rust free and good for many more years of use

That is amazing man I have a decent amount of HO scale stuff from locomotive to Rolling Stock to tunnels and bridges always working on projects and rebuilding locomotives as is that is a very beautiful train set you got there keep the good work my good friend

hey ! i have the same class 37 in BR green.......... a classic ! mine runs amazingly well considering its 50 odd years old ! give the motor and contacts a good squirt of electrical cleaner, and a lube up with some light oil, and it will probably run for another 50 years ! :)

16:20 I have some Triang track & it was very rusty. Sounds brutal,but I took the rails out & burnished them with a wire brush on an electric drill. They are now like chrome by comparison.

Well, this was a surprise ! I can remember being well miffed as a kid when they replaced super 4 track with crappy system 6. I hope you weren't cleaning with sandpaper? You were? That's the anti-rust protection gone then... Now I'm going to be an anorak - not an XO4 motor. The motor bogies had a different number, but don't ask me what it was. I didn't have any diesels back in the day.

I’m on the other side of the pond and I love British trains. I even have OO gauge trains. I need to get my layout up and running again

I have a Marx train set from circa 1957 and it still works.

I had the same coaches, but a steam loco. I do not remember where it went.

Great video on your class 37 with 3 Pullman coaches. Also the bits that clip/hold the track together are called fishplates.

If you want to clean that loco I recommend ipa (isopropyl alcohol) to clean the wheels and inside the motor but be careful not to get it on the motor windings, I recommend that you dont listen to me though😂 and instead go and look at a guide to clean it. Good luck

Well...considering BR didn't build the first Pacer until 1980 and privatisation was late 80's that's amazing foresight on behalf of whoever made your model.

Nowt wrong with Triang Super 4 track! Designed to accommodate the wheel profiles of all manufacturers so customers could use what they liked... Not soldering iron damage, someone has left a power flex in contact with it..... for some reason the plastic insulation reacts with the mouldings... This Pullmans have pin-point semi scale wheels so shoukd be fine on modern tracks... Great stuff Triang...... thousand made so loads of fodder for chopping up and rebuilding....👍😊👍😊

Tri-ang super Four, the original sysytem Six had the same half sleepers at the joints, the track now is made by Roco?
