Will ''The Line'' Be a Place to Live in the Future?

Ғылым және технология

The Line will be part of Saudi Arabia's new city NEOM project, designed to increase the country's revenues and run entirely on renewable energy. The Saudi Arabian government has set up an entire zone for the NEOM developments in Tabuk.
The Line city is planned to be built in a linear structure with a length of 170 km. The width of the city will be 200 meters, and the height will reach 500 meters. The Line city will be built in a mirrored structure that stretches along the coast and reaches the deserts. When the city is completed, it will be able to accommodate a population of 9 million people.

I can see the line descending to a dystopian slum, reliant on a class system. It'll even have the motto "Work and loyalty brings prosperity and class" Also building something like that in an unstable region?

Let’s make this idea actually of value 1) dig a canal along the route that HUGE ships can sale on 2) dig harbors along the route 3) put nuclear power plants on the shore of each harbor 4) use to nuclear power plants to desalinate and purify the canal water 5) pipe the water north and south of the canal 6) built cities along the pipelines 7) use the excess water from the pipeline TO GREEN UP THE NATION.

@@niyonmor786 As an Engineer I can tell you this idea is SCIENTIFICALLY possible (nothing needs to be developed) but I have no idea as to the COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS. Again it can technically be done, we know how, but how much it would cost and if the value to SA is there over the long term, who knows.

It might be an engineering marvel, but not for people. We should make existing cities more sustainable & liveable & beautiful & compact & inclusive & integrated & safe for all. And it is being done all around the world, even in developing countries. Did you notice that the rich will live in beautiful houses along the coast in a beautiful natural setting while everyone else will live in an "invisible" box behind walls in the desert? This is not a sustainable city of the future, it's a prison... a war on the middle & low income classes! Not seen, not heard. Working 24 / 7 out of sight for the benefit of the oligarchy.

@@niyonmor786 I was thinking about it, I think the main advantage is the faster transport, if it takes 20 minutes to go from one side to the other, my thought was, if it were wrapped in a ring the longest journey would be 10 minutes, presuming you wanted to get from one side of the ring to the other. However I didn’t think it through. I didn’t account for the fact that the train or tram system can go much faster on a straight track then a curved track. A curved track you have to deal with the centrifugal forces, People can handle a lot more g’s if all the acceleration is doing is pushing them into their seat, opposed to pushing them into the wall of the train. Although I will say, that there are ways of dealing with that problem but those solutions are a little wacky to say the least.

If you make a simply cost calculation, you will quickly see, that even $1,000,000,000,000 will not be enough for a building of that size. You will also notice that such a city would need far more tunnels than shown in the plans. The city will never get built. That is the sad truth.

This is _just_ beautiful. This 1D city can just stay on a single plane all while we live arguably better lives than ever in the suburbs. And then you have the other previews. Yep, we finally have a “first look” of sorts at real life humans’ idea of the future, quite unique from those on the silver screen. Also, that’s what I’d really salute about Interesting Engineering: they’re not at all afraid to take unreasonable (and _definitely_ flawed) criticism to the face if that means getting the future out to everyone who deserves it. Hats off to them!! Next stop, the vertical city! Now, all we need is the raw materials for a mile-high building… 😅
