The greatest imports from the British have been the critics and the humorists. Both seem to thread in the same currents of editorial waters.

I am not sure if I can ever agree with anyone who still insists British people have a chip on their shoulder about the end of the empire, to people of my generation it is some past event so distant as to be not worth any mention. Will Self is older and perhaps he has a different attitude though for most people born after the 1970s he might as well be talking about people having a chip on their shoulder about the collapse of the Angevin empire in 1214 for all it is worth.

You don't think we still feel the effects or experience the results of the empire building and ending?

i'm yankee but i lived in the u.k. for 2 years and i'd say the whole 'british empire' deal is still hugely significant amongst the english. gigantically siginificant esp. amongst the english "working class" and especially when they're drunk. and honestly when they talk shit about americans or the states it really does sound to me like a whole lot of envy and jealousy and the english do it in far greater numbers than scottish, welsh or irish. i also think the english are in big denial about how patriotic and racist they are or at least can be. and of course we all know it's only when americans act in a patriotic manner that being nationalistic suddenly becomes "annoying". then again the english (and i do love me some english and england) are easily annoyed by a whole list of things from everyday life them and the french have to be the most miserable people on earth. nobody's perfect of course.

I am glad as an American we don't just have a popular vote. That would have led to the collapse of America long ago.
