i think a very big point that you missed in this video is the fact that sexy concepts predominantly came as a marketing tactic from companies to profit off of women's bodies and leading to them being objectified in expense of us as an audience not really knowing if they wanted to participate in such concept in the first place, with many known cases of idols not feeling comfortable on set while filming music videos and some even crying while preparing a comeback, leading to an unhealthy relationship between fans that were willing to listen to group and lift up the sales but that at the same time were demanding of a percentage of body exposure of their idols in order to stan (i hope my point is coming across), as well as degrading their image and with that denying the artistic identity that, i assume, they wanted to be known as.

yes i was going to comment on this! i was hoping the video would go into stuff like the stellar marionnette comeback and how uncomfortable the members were with it, ryu sera of 9muses having to comfort the younger members etc. this is the main reason why i'm ok with sexy concepts never coming back even though the songs were some of my faves

​@reneemeow5375 Stellar was done so wrong. And even if the company really wanted to have a mature concept, the least they could've done is give the girls non revealing clothes to perform in. Idk why they thought making them be damn near naked was gonna sell albums when all the successful girl groups have never had to stoop that low. Even their vid with the vag concept. It was inappropriate but kindof iconic lol. It would've been more tasteful if the girls were in regular clothing.

I think the biggest dropout from s*xy girl group concepts since gen 2/3 is hugely because in gen 3 a lot of former s*xy girl group members came forward and expose that their company was manipulating, gaslighting or threatening them into it. This is why not even most adults will still be fond of supporting these types of groups, because every single time you wonder for the safety of the idol. Not only minors are unsafe in kpop, but definitely adult idols are also often very unsafe. And even if their entertainments didn't force them, usually a loooot of creeps would still follow these members around and talk NSFW to them for no reason after their idol career. Lots of harassment. I personally don't mind a hint of grown woman energy in a kpop mv, but I tend to avoid it these days due to said mention reasons I listed.

This is true. And if the sexy concepts return, it will remain true. If you ever seen a concert of any of these groups years ago, it's basically a cabaret performance.

Now tbh it feels like they are trying to blur the lines with sexy and age appropriate concepts. To me "cookie" and even "attention" by new jeans is a perfect example of that. The creators can put in innuendos and seductive dancing to songs and claim ignorance as a scapegoat. Sad to see. The solution is just debut women over 18 but they're not going to anytime soon.

I was a teenager during start of 3 gen when I liked K-pop, I was a gg Stan and was drawn to sexy girl groups. I was a huge 9M and AOA fan. I liked the sound of their music more than other concepts. I actually like more elegant concepts instead of sexy, but that was the sound during the time and I liked it a lot.

Kiss of Life already bringing it back. Loving their concept. No minors, all talented charismatic members

I think most of them are legally minors as in Korea the age of consent is 19 there and Korea has switched to the international aging system. Also I wouldn't call their concept sexy outside of like Nobody Knows

I think the sexy concept we saw often in gen 2 has been repackaged to female empowerment in gen 3. The new sexy for the female gaze/female audiences instead of catering to male gazes. That’s not the way the sexy concept was only for male audiences but it was one way to get public attention.

Sistar was well liked in the general public, but didn’t have a strong/large fan following. I don’t think that had anything to do with their sexy concept. I think it’s just the music was good and catchy, and appealed to the general public. It just so happens that their concept was almost always “sexy”.

Hybe Labels are definitely not releasing a “sexy” image girl group any time soon. Maybe smaller company groups like kiss of life

I really hope the cvnt/sexy concept comes back. Its my fav concept ever.

After watching the video, the only way a sexy concept will do well is if it is more seductive and cator towards western fans / older KNEZ. Like not overly sexy but a hint of sexiness!

I kinda disagree about hyolyn, as a SISTAR & Hyolyn fan, she is well respected idol in south korea, she may not be popular among new inter-fans but she was and still is a big artist in south korea and many idols idolize her, and I don't think she isn't well respect because of her sexiness because people always consider Sistar(and hyolyn) as classy sexy or naturally sexy artist that doesn't have to show overly sexiness, and they are mostly ok with their sexy images. Hyolyn case is more like her songs don't get enough appreciation and love since most of her songs after Sistar disbandment didn't really do well on chart. and Sistar had small fandom even though they're known as unbreakable wall top 3 GG with snsd & 2ne1. So after Sistar Disbandment, she haven't got many support from her fans (and most of Sistar fans are grown up and busy with their life), also most Hyolyn songs don't match with general public taste, that's why Hyolyn is not seem like well respected idol, but still she is considered as well respected artist in entertainmant industry.

I miss it because the sexy concepts always had good music because it has to be good to be respected and in previous gens the minor member was out to the back while the older members get to show out. But now companies make their youngest the main visual so these concepts can't capitalize off their main visual properly.snsd was marketed as artists who were wholesome and just happened to be sexy. It was already sold and their performance didn't focus on their sex appeal but the art and portraying the music which provides a more relatable experience

Im a straight male BG stan. Not exactly common in the kpop community lol. And yes, I did like the sexy concepts mostly because the girls were fine.... That said, I did like some songs from AOA and one song from Hello Venus. Right now, afrobeat - type songs are topping charts, and that actually has a lot of sexy movements and outfits, but its really not the same as before.

The only sexy girl girl that exist currently is girl crush which is a 4th gen girl crush but the thing is they have a really small fanbase and not popular at all but they have dedicated fanbase but even then most people in the fanbase don't really care about the music but cares about the looks which makes me sad because the girls are really talented but thier talents are not being recognized anyways girl crush barely release music if they do it would be every 2-3 years and it would be a single not an album due to lack of budget anyway i love your channel and your videos and have a good day ❤

@@all-kulture Yeah, they exist but they have a minor in the group (a new member joining). IDK if she's a minor anymore (I think If I remember, she's 2005), which means she's 18 now and Korea's legal age is 19, so she's yet to turn 19 yet (in 2024)

I can't quite get my head around it but I think what you say isn't wrong, but it's more complicated. One the one hand Koreans were and still are more conservative than westerners. SNSD was actually made sexier relatively speaking when they tried to be more successful in the west, but it failed. On the other hand, there was a time when Kpop in general was a lot sexier than it is now, and that was also true of boy groups. There were several videos rated 18+, the jokes in variety shows were a lot naughtier etc. In part that seems to have disappeared due to western pressure for more "political correctness". Sexy yes, but sexual exploitation of women no, and it's very difficult to draw the line, so perhaps it's easier to stay away from it altogether. When boys do sexy concepts even they get criticised, eg for sexual exploitation of minors, sexualisation of men, or gay baiting. What I do wholeheartedly agree with though is your point about the intensity of following. In general male fans don't tend to form intense "parasocial relationships" as much with individuals as female fans do, and I don't meant that term in the negative sense as it is sometimes falsely used (in media studies it is a neutral term). In this regard men and women act very much like they do in real life. Not saying all of them, but the majority. The most common fantasy of men is a "harem" of pretty, interchangeable girls whereas women tend to want a monogamous long term fantasy boyfriend. That's why the extreme of "rotational groups" in Japan with a high number of members who get constantly voted in and out mostly on the basis of looks only works with ggs and not bgs. Eg in Korea fans protested against changing the lineups of Super Junior and NCT. That said, in the early days of Kpop there was stuff that I still can't believe existed, I assume there must have been less (self-)censorship in SK of the media in general, eg for some time idols with dyed hair were banned on TV, and in K-dramas not even kisses could be shown, yet idols both male and female in some TV shows and on stage were doing fanservice that even westerners today would find quite jaw dropping - amongst the same sex, mind you, sexes touching each other while dancing was much more scandalous. So you really can't discuss such things as sexiness without understanding cultural differences.

Nowdays kpop is worldwide popular and is getting more attention. During the golden era (2009-2012) the girl groups took care of Korean fanbase, and it was almost made by guys in the 20's (like soldiers) but even few uncles supported them. Many female idols were models for underwear brands and they weren't shy to show their beautiful bodies. Miss that time.

I just couldn't understand "sexy concepts". It was a complete downgrade from the late stage 2nd gen era of around 2009-2011/2012. Most of those """sexy concepts""" were downright sexual in a really weird way. Doesn't mean it's better now tho. Why do 99% of ggs now look like they are 12 year olds? I remember back in 2011 and earlier when gg idols actually looked their age.
