So we traded Suarez just to go back and get a guy that is very similar to what we had with Suarez? Spend it on Snell and go with Urias or Rojas.

@@MarineLayerPod Of course. It's a comment on roster planning & construction. It was clear in November that the main FA alternatives to Geno would be comparable in production, but more expensive. That said, I doubt they're signing Chapman (or anyone)

Geno only had 1 year left on his deal so to get any value for him moving forward, a trade had to happen sooner than later. Used him to upgrade the floor at catcher and potentially really start to be able to manage Cal's usage, along with a high-ceiling reliever. Idk if that type of relief for Cal was available on the FA market, so that's a bit of an underrated move. Also, though they are similar players, Chapman's track record on defense and career power numbers are much more likely to be replicated (in Seattle, at least) at age 30/31 than Geno's the last couple of years at age 32/33.

Oh and guys remember one thing. It's not what you know but who you know in life. Just look at the beautiful sport of baseball. I had a coach that was associated with a major league team during spring training. He once told me the following. "There are so many guys in the minors who deserve a legit shot at the majors who will never get a sniff of ball above AA....they just don't know the right people.."

Can't believe you guys were even debating whether it is better to add Chapman now and have a 4 win player for a FULL season vs. trading for a guy that will only be on the team for TWO months. The new midseason addition would have to put up 4 WAR in 2 months, a 12 Win season pace to just Equal a full season of Chapman. You always add in the offseason if you can. No brainer

Honestly I would love to have Jose Ramirez then Chapman and Nolan from the cards. I know he would cost more in theory but I think we could do a package like offering Urias and Hancock and cole young for him. We would be much more rounded because he has speed and higher avg and power and he plays good defense as well.

Scott Servais and Lou Piniella, both started the first 8 seasons with 5 winning seasons and 3 losing seasons. Lou had 2 more playoff appearances than Scott. Scott deserves some credit for someone who never managed a team before starting with M’s. Lou had a WS ring with the Reds as a manager before joining the M’s. Going back to Bill Bavasi and Jack Zduriencik days would be SEVERAL steps backward for the M’s. Note that Lou Piniella and Pat Gillick both quit on their own terms. Jerry Dipoto, Justin Hollander, and Scott Servais look to stay. Ownership should recognize long term success by sticking with them. Fans can’t deny that this is a winning culture with Jerry + Justin and Scott despite ownership restrictions.

@@MarineLayerPod You should do a podcast on who the M”s should get if they fire DIpoto-Hollander-Servais team, then do another one on who the M’s shouldn’t get. Right now, the Red Sox would be a good spot for the Dipoto team. They have a little bit more salary for Dipoto to play with and the Red Sox are not affected by the Bally Sports RSN.

I think you got it wrong. I think ownership could not do better with constant payroll cuts, etc. There are 2 sides in a negotiation and Jerry is negotiating what he wants and if he can’t get it he may go elsewhere. I don’t think the ownership is trying to find a replacement because that would be insanely stupid from their perspective. Are they going to attract a better FO with the resources and the nonsensical changes they make? No

@@MarineLayerPod To be clear, I wasn’t trying to be nasty, just clarifying that I think there is a better chance Jerry is asking for clarity on payroll, etc. moving forward. I really like a trade for Max Kepler. We should send Emerson Hancock, Taylor Trammell, Dylan Moore, and Sam Haggerty to the Twins. The M’s can sign a FA pitcher like Trevor Bauer to backfill Emerson Hancock. Ask ownership for money to get Matt Chapman. Adding Kepler, Bauer, and Chapman would put the M’s in a good position for the playoff spot.
