Will it Work? Using Crankbrothers Speedier Tire Lever to Install Studded Winter Bicycle Tires

In this video, I install two studded winter tires on my bicycle. An Instagram follower recommended the Crankbrothers Speedier Tire Lever for installs of difficult bicycle tires. I bought the lever some time ago and was looking forward to using it on my winter tire swap. Did it go according to plan? Was the Crankbrothers Speedier Tire Lever helpful? Or did my fingers pay the price?

I feel your pain! A tip that has helped me prevent flats are using talc powder on the tube and inside of the tire. For some reason it seems to allow the tire lever to glide and not pinch. I'd rather have dry versus wet on tubes and tires. Over the years it's helped me.

Having been a bicycle mechanic for over 20 years now I can tell you that there are just some tires that are harder to put on. And those Schwalbe's are notorious for being difficult to put on. We have played around with many different gadgets to see if they work but in the end it is either pure muscle to get them on or do as you did with two strong tire levers. Sometimes a little soap and water can help. Skinned knuckles come with the territory lol. Great video Cheers

Scwalbe, Continental tires have both proven difficult to uninstall and install from 20”, 24”, 26”, 27.5” rims. Their wire beads are both very robust which probably explains their durability. As for roadside flat repair I average 90 minutes/tire trying to uninstall and install and using various tools some touted as the godsend to fixing flats. It always come down to using hand strength (difficult for arthritic hands) and regular tire levers works.

Schwalbe do their own tyre levers. I carry a set (3 levers to a set) on my touring bike 700C Schwalbe Marathon Tyres, a set with my mountain bike, 26" wheels, and I have another set in my toolbox. I fit Schwalbe studded tyres to my mountain bike for the winter (I live in a ski resort). Usually allow 2 hours for the job and expect a graze or two! It is also unusual not to have at least one pinched tube! I don't think it would be possible to mount the Schwalbe tyres without levers no matter how strong your fingers are or how much lubricant (Schwalbe or wash up liquid) you use. The Schwalbe tyre levers have a clip fitting which prevents the tyre coming off as you move around the rim. Confused me at first, but now I find them excellent. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching them.

It's great for taking my tyre off, but absolutely useless at getting it back on, these new (ETC Hardpack MTB Bike Tyres 26" x 1.95") tyres are a nightmare to fit, .....EDIT, I went inside and had a cup of tea, then I returned for another attempt, only this time I slightly tilted the tool so the front edge facing me was tilted up, and voilà, just like that, no grunts or effort as I had been doing, it just slipped on, so yes a big thumbs up from me, thank you. I used the speedier lever crankbrothers , and no grazed knuckles, a bonus,,,,,,,,,EDIT, it went on so easily that I had to double-check it had gone on as it was effortless once I got the knack of using it

I have recently discovered the Kool-Stop Tire bead jack. For some reason, I have only chosen the most difficult tires my whole life. This tool is a knuckle-saver. And well worth the fifteen bucks. You're going to be mounting many, many tires over the next few years. Give it a try.

Haha, i know the problems too. I never use the tire lever to mount the tire though. training your fingers strongly is better. You can put a little bit of dishwashing liquid on the edge of the rim. This makes it easy for the tire to slide around the rim. I never wear these gloves. The gloves will stuck between the tire and the rim.

To get that tire on you need to push the back side to the center as much as you can and nudge down to give you the extra space needed, the marathon plus is same way if you don't get back side down it won't seat

I once read a suggestion to use a tie-wrap tightly around the tire and rim so you don't end up 'chasing' the tire in circles, and then to use a lever to pop it into place. Still a job, but it worked quite well. That and making sure you squeeze the already-mounted sides to make sure the bead is as low as possible. Not sure if my explanation is clearish or mystifying! :)

I've found that tire psi info is always difficult to read so I use a high contrast marker pen to write the info on the tire sidewall. Makes it much easier to read.

For your hands, I suggest Mechanix gloves for working on your bike. I always have a few pairs around, I even take them along in my hiking pack because Ontario is just lousy with poison ivy and I'd like to avoid that if at all possible. The Mechanix gloves are great for dexterous activity. You

Hi again. This is very familiar. I recently installed the Schwalbe Winter tires on my bike and found them hard to work with as well. My problem was with seating them evenly. Had to pump them up to 80l psi with some soapy water around the beads. I also find it easier to put the tube, slightly inflated, into the tire before I start putting it on the rim. I find it makes it less likely to pinch it with the lever. I recorded mine too, but never got around to editing this. Your bike looks so clean and nice compared to mine and your video is done very professionally. Great job!

Look on the good side you have a very good tire, and the odds of a flat or it going bad is rare

I have the Schwalbe Marathon Plus on my Sutra, and I had them installed at the bike shop because I was told they were a pain to install. Glad I did. Awesome tip with the inflation information placement never thought of it but it make total sense.
