WILL IT START? WILL IT RUN OK? The Dodge's engine running problems are eerily familiar ...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

At the end of a recent video, the Dodge pickup truck's engine took it upon itself to refuse to start, despite having run perfectly earlier that day. Therefore it was time to raise the bonnet again and begin investigations. What was the problem? Why wouldn't it start now? What would it need to get the Dodge's engine running reliably again?
I decided to spend a morning on the fuel system, starting at the carburettor end and working my way back through the fuel pump, fuel lines, and back to the petrol tank, in a bid to identify - and then hopefully fix - whatever was wrong with fine old 1/2 ton truck. This video covers the work that was done yesterday, and the current state of play having checked everything I could think of that was fuel related.
Other possible problems that crossed my mind included a fuel cap that wasn't venting thus causing pressure to build up in the tank, eventually overwhelming the pump (I've had that before on another vehicle), and also the pick-up pipe in the Dodge's new tank not quite reaching the fuel that I knew was in there.

I've always admired anyone who has the skill and patience to fix motoring faults like yourself Richard. My late stepfather was the same, and would never give up until he solved the problem. Your poor A40 waiting patiently for attention. It deserves top priority as it's the car you learnt to drive in. Enjoyable video thank you.

As one who when given a Wolseley 680 age 18 I promised to do the servicing. I used the trolley jack to lift the car to change the oil or something and went right through the light and expensive alloy sump! End of all servicing! So I admire anyone that has a go and greatly enjoyed this update of the Dodge, and look forward to many more. I am also delighted that your petrolhead son is following the family tradition! I always enjoy his presentations which have grown so much in terms of confidence and knowledge over the time he has done them. Super stuff. You are both motoring memory jerkers! I have watched other sites but found them much below par in comparison, other than Twin Cam who is more than excellent, though for a different market sector. He too has grown in all areas of the years I have followed which I feel your son has and will without, I hope, forgetting his studies! Lol! Thank you Rob

It is so annoying when new parts make your vehicle less reliable because they are such poor quality. I'm more into bikes than cars but I remember having problems with new cylinder head bolts on my BSA B31. I ended up filing down the rounded off hexagons of the old bolts to a smaller spanner size and putting those back in.

Lovely to see little Dodge back running, and hopefully sorted long term. Surprising coincidence that two of the OCC fleet suffered the same fate, clearly brings into question the quality of new replacement parts. While some 'after market' kit can be quite good there is a lot of dross around. I know you didn't fit it Rick so you had to go with what was there but I think I would find that AC pump and rebuild that if it is the right size. That lamp is an excellent find. I know from watching Salvage Hunters that those sorts of things are becoming very rare now. I would certainly get it rewired and put it to use, you might need a new light fitting but I am sure it would be worth the effort. Strangely when I first found your channel I thought that I had subscribed, it wasn't until few videos later that I realised I was not, 'honest mistake guv'. Thanks Rick I am glad little Dodge is happy once again. 👍👍

Top job Rick. I put a new fan belt on my Fergie a few years ago. The old one was OK but starting to look a little perished. The new fan belt fell to bits the other day after very little use. I ended up putting the old one back on which had been on the tractor for as long as I can remember. Modern parts. 👎

Hi 👋 I haven't viewed this video before. Lovely old Dodge truck. A good paint job on it would bring it up. You have a few projects going, Austin A40 Farina being one. I like your Standard 8, it's a very nice example of one. My grandfather had one in the early 1960s. It was a Standard in a grey color with a red interior. I was very young then , so i can remember riding in it. He kept his cars in good condition. He sold it for a Vauxhall Velox.

Brilliant news Rick - Little Dodge Lives Again ! I think you would be wise to put your AC Pump on and keep the 'after market' one as a spare, especially as you had the same problem with the Standard. Great video, as always, and it's lovely to see all your mysterious items that you have gathered over the years. Many thanks - take care 🙂

Nice video Rick, seeing that Vauxhall shifter at the start brought back memories of my old dad who had a couple in his fairly extensive tool kit. In his later years he gave a lot of his tools away, still got a few of them myself, but sadly no Vauxhall shifters.

Richard I don’t agree that these repro AC type pumps are poorly made. My Kubelwagen has one as does my German built Ford V3000. Both are repro and give reliable service, I always carry a spare diaphragm for each vehicle as they do wear and the content of today’s fuel does them no favours. A quick way of diagnosis is to remove the inlet and output pipes and turn the engine over by hand if the pump does not “quack” it’s either the diaphragm or the connection to the actuating lever. My two German vehicles have an additional potential “Achilles heel” in the form of a push rod connecting the actuating lever to a lobe on the camshaft, this can wear at either end and it is always advisable to pack the bottom chamber of the pump with grease to provide lubrication to the mechanism.

That's fine I'm just going off the two repro pumps I've had to deal with in recent months, no doubt some are fine but so far I'm unimpressed with either of the ones I've experienced recently. The good thing about the Model AA truck I used to own was that it had a gravity fuel feed, so not much to go wrong there :-)

Some repro parts do seem poorly made. I recently replaced a failed rear wiper motor with a new repro one. It worked erratically then wouldn't switch off. I ended up replacing it with a second hand genuine one.

I think most of these reproduction stuff are made in china, they are cheap, but really, they have gone to the trouble to get the thing cast (and they do look the part), why not go that bit further to make it as good as the OEM? In my experience of buying such items they do not last and like you, I find a good genuine item, which just work as they should. It is quite disheartening when stuff is just junk, not just car stuff, LED light bulbs for the house, I have a pile of new ones that only worked for a short time - supposed to be sustainable, but with all the rubbish produced, we are just fooling ourselves, I could go on, but the cost of keeping data centres cool already means that this posting has used up my daily allowance of Co2 emissions!

Excellent job, well done! Can I suggest.....you swap out all the [old?] flexible fuel hoses for proper ethanol-proof rubber hoses? Just in case the odd slug of rubber breaks away to create more issues? I noted some green fabric-covered fuel hose early on in the video...Plus, what looked like something important ling on the floor under Little Dodge?
