WILL IT START?? My Great-Grandpa's Old Farmall Super A Tractor

Once upon a time it was a hard-working farm machine, hauling wood, plowing gardens, and pulling around trailers full of grandchildren. But great-grandpa's old Farmall Super A tractor has been sitting for years. For now it's only being used as yard decoration, but Austin has wanted to restore it for a while. The only problem is, he's been told there's so many problems with it, and it's been sitting for so long, there's little hope to get it going. But Austin is determined to give it a try. Will he be able to get it started?

Ha, my grandpa had a 52 super A. Thing never ran after I was born as there was no reason for it to then. Always liked it. Had a complete stock mower deck that I have yet to see elsewhere. The mower itself being belt driven. And while I did see some that were close to its design, I didn't find the exact one. Brings back many memories.

Nice job getting it going. I am proud to see the younger generations bringing these great tractors back to life. My kids and I are bringing my grandfathers 49 super a back to new. Keep it up!

Hello good to see a young man interested in something that makes the world a better place instead of eating Cheeses and playing video games. That bad ring gear will be just in one spot and that will be the spot where the engine always stops when you shut it off, don’t ask me why 😀 So if you just grab the fan and push down on the belt you can manually turn the engine enough to get it past the bad teeth or do what I did and make a crank for it I did that for my 8N Ford until I had time to split it and fix it. Just always be careful it’s in neutral!! You might want to check your coil to make sure that it’s a 12V or a 6V , if you’re using a 12v battery on a 6v coil it will eventually melt and if your still on the 6v system make sure that your wiring is right because it is originaly a positive ground. And the longer your battery cables the less power to the starter and it will be very hard on the starter also and if your keeping it original 6v positive ground the thicker and shorter your cables the better. I would suggest a compression test because it smokes so much you probably will need a rebuild soon and your oil pan has 2 pet cocks for high and low levels and because it sat so long after you filled up the coolant and ran it hot after it cools down I would just crack the oil pan drain plug a turn or so until it starts dripping and see if water or antifreeze comes out, I always bring a crescent with me when I am buying a tractor to take a little oil sample it has been a very good thing to do it has saved me from an expensive headache! And if you have brakes and your starter is not working you can always very very carefully pull start it if someone is willing to help you you can put your 8N in 2nd gear and the A in the highest gear and make sure you know your hand signals and your somewhere safe and there is no traffic and no kids and don’t do it unless you can trust each other 😀🇨🇦

You can make it run, I have my dad’s 100 I disked the garden last week with it And my Brother has our Grandfather’s Model A with hand lifts. If possible don’t get a Chinese carburetor. On the left side upper oil pan is 1 or 2 large wing nuts turn them counter clockwise and that’s how you check the oil. Good job saving the old Tractor 👍

Stick with it son. You can find any part you need for that Farmall. It has plenty of power once you get it running right. You can learn anything about it you want to know on You Tube and Yesterdays Tractors forum.

Most of the Letter Series Farmall have petcocks on the oil pan to check the oil level. Rachel Gingel and ( Dan) has videos and a book that is super helpful on repairing Farmalls ( and others) They are in KZread as well Good luck on your project. Glad you are putting your time and efforts to something positive and educational.

@@RockWellAcresFarm2023 I like to see them running smooth and mechanically sound. ( Not modified) I also prefer to see them in their work clothes, Not all painted and polished and too pretty to use. My opinion on the alternator conversion: It came from the factory with 6 volts It ran and worked fine for 50 + years with 6 volts. Why can't it run a few more years on 6 volts?? Good job on getting the Farmall running, that's great. Bringing Joy to your Mother's Heart, That Is Awesome!!!! Get some photos of her with the tractor

At this point, I’m planning to restore the tractor, but I’ll have to come up with the money first. Maybe if KZread pays off, haha. If I do get to paint it up pretty it will probably be used in local parades to promote the channel. But I totally get what you’re saying. There’s something special about an old faded rusty tractor that gives it extra character. It has a story to tell.

I use muriatic acid to clean old fouled plugs, then oven cleaner and a torch to finish. A breaker bar and Diesel to try and unstick a rusty engine. Amazing that water didn't get down that broken exhaust. Take that thing apart, and use electrolysis to de-rust the parts.

I’m sure my Poppie has some of those things we can use. He was an auto Diesel mechanic for over 40 years. We just took the tractor to his shop to break it down to work on it.
