I used to repair these diesels. I didn't see the yellow glow plug light come on. Check the strip fuse located on the firewall behind the intake. When you put in new heat shields on the injectors, you can check the glow plug functionality. Make sure you use never seize on the injectors when you reinstall. You could have primed the system easier by pressurizing the return line(just a little). When you do the timing belt, you need to lock the cam in position, lock the pump sprocket in position and loosen the cam sprocket. The cam sprocket is a tapered fit. If you don't break the cam sprocket loose, you won't get proper timing(which is set with a dial indicator on the back of the pump). Repaired correctly and properly maintained, this engine will run another 200K.

I like the rattle of a diesel...Last company I worked for had a mix of Ford PowerStrokes & heavy duty Internationals. Once a week, I'd do a basic runthrough of the trucks & their systems - the Fords were o.k., but the Internationals were the ones I preferred: punch the clutch in, bring the rpms up, just barely slip the clutch(we had steep driveways, sorry) & those trucks were off to the races. I know the Jetta doesn't have that kind of "get up & go", but it could in the right hands :)

I gave it to a vegan friend who added an extra 60.000 km running on vegetable oil. At 480.000 km the car started to fall apart but the engine was still alive and well, consuming 1 liter of motor oil every 10.000 Km. Man, just amazing. Yes, bullet proof engine.

Favorite VWs. 85-92. Owned a 92 GTI 16v since 99. I love it. Recently snatched up an MK3 2000 Cabrio. Really nice cars, too. Before they got so bloated. My wife had an 89 Jetta GL manual 14 years ago through college. It was a really nice car with 220k when we sold it still running strong.

Those engines were a slow as a wet week but very reliable. There was never any doubt about it starting. What I personally would have done was cracked the injector lines loose and cranked until diesel came through, then tightened them up and I'd have been surprised if it didn't start right away then.

Wow, really enjoyed that, bit of a walk down memory lane, had an ‘85’ Jetta, they were built like tanks and such a good drive with a cavernous trunk for such a small car. I’ve honestly seen cars on the road in worse condition than that is now. 👍🏻 awesome!!

Near me in a lot there's an abandoned 1966 Pontiac LeMans convertible in light blue. Interior destroyed, top gone, surrounded by tires, (filled with 70's pull tab budwieser cans) but the trans and the v8 engine are still there. Someone took the carb

This thing just reminded me of our '87 VW Jetta Mk2 1.6 TD 44kW made in 🇩🇪 (before 1.8 66kw until it died, owned it from 2004 until 2011) and '89 VW Golf Mk2 1.6 D 40kW made in 🇧🇪 (owned from 2012-2017, planning to return it back).

I thought the brown in the diesel would be microbial growth, im assuming because thats how old jet fuel gets with moisture.

Budget Buildz you should really look into obtaining some Liqui Moly Diesel Purge. Some of the best medicine for an old diesel.

Michael a good tip from a Belgian Mecanic .when you unbolt the injectors ALWAYS push towards the engine !!!!!!!! These cylinderheads are very fragile you can easily break the injector housing SAME for mounting them up again ...in the meanwhile your neigbours are like hey man how come you dont have Mosquitos around your house ??? whell i start my Jetta every day
