I'm just down the road from smokey lake and seeing low 40's for highs and high 20's for lows. its tempting to tap but I think we are going to get one more cold snap yet in February

I never know when to get going, seems the weather always works against me regardless. I'm in southern Ohio, tapped feb 5th which is normally a few weeks early but the weather is all over the place so.... Sap in these hills is normally 1.5 to 2. Have taken in about 500 gallons on 120 or so taps, it's on and off with the warm nights.

Yeah this year seems like it'll be early if you'd even be ready for it, which we are not. Do you think you're season could end soon?

@@TheMapleDude1 Our reds normally bud in late March and the rocks can run into April. It looks like we have on and off freezing nights well into March so still plenty of flow coming. Most of the main producers in this area started in mid January. I'm normally only good for about three weeks before I'm so worn out I can't take it anyway. As long as I catch some of it I'm good. This year I want to run some main line right into the shack and do away with collecting. I'm in the hills and have 300' foot elevation climb from the shack up into the woods, going to switch up and rethink the whole hill side.

Curious, Even if they started wouldn't you run the risk of bacteria forming and when you start collecting in 3-4 weeks you've already started degrading the quality of the sap because of the bacteria on in the taps/tubing???

Yes if buckets pails for sure. Tubing not as much but a fresh tap hole is always the best.
