Will It Run? MZ ETZ300 Part 2 - The Engine...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After an introduction in Part 1 I get started on the MZ ETZ300 Wilf Green Special's Engine... and we have a problem! Can you help? Please leave a comment below and subscribe for more! #mz #2stroke #willitrun

Do hope you get it going. Long time back I had a TS(?)250 and loved that bike. Lots of low down torque for a two stroke, stove pipe type exhaust. Heaps of character! I remember you had to keep the throttle partially open on long down hill stretches to keep the engine oiled. Fun times! 😁

@AlbertDongler I’m certainly going to try my best! From what I hear the TS250 had a slighter nicer engine than the ETZ, as you say it was well known for pulling well low down. They certainly are simple and tough with few major flaws, a bit sad more of us didn’t realise this at the time. Ah yes, the fun of premix and having to blip the throttle on long down hill stretches! I’ll hopefully get the next video out in the next few days, I’ve been battling the weather.

@carljanisewski it's very sad it's because it stood outside for a considerable time. The Mahle piston was obviously high quality given it looks in really good condition after 32,000 miles. So much for 2 strokes wearing out quickly. :)

To remove the head, if you remove the exhaust pipe the engine will pivot forward around its rear mounting bushes making removal of the head a breeze. I'm sure I don't need to say that corrosion of the piston/cylinder is very common with 2 strokes that have been left standing a long time. Soaking with ATF or diesel and oil mix is the best solution to free the piston with some judicious use of heat. I have a longer comment to follow for the next video in the series, I have just found you and am playing catch up lol.

@tonym480 thanks for your comment, much appreciated! In part 2 I managed to get the head off ok but it wasn’t a pretty sight. On the plus side after days of ATF soaking the piston moves in the bore, albeit not to the top of the bore due to corrosion at the top of the bore. More soon! :)

The cylinder head is different to the ones I've had & were factory ones fitted with a forged piston. I believe Burwins did a 300 conversion at the time. It may well run fine for a short while but as it's been stood a long time the crank case oil seals will probably give up as I've seen many times.

@bobrockinred900 thanks for the info. Given the state of the bore I’m concerned the bottom end might also need overhauling and getting the engine out and splitting the cases is a whole different level of skill I suspect. If the bearings were ok but the seals were ok I understand that they can be done ‘externally’ which would be great if true.

@@BikingChap I purchased a 250 that had been stood a long time & phoned Burwins for parts & they said you'll need seals but i said it runs ok .... half an hour later I'm on the phone to Burwins about those seals. Can't remember now if i split the engine or not as over 20 years ago now but very different from the Yamaha's i was used to.

@@TriumphBeezaman I may well get on to Martin again, when I asked him how many engines he’d rebuilt he said ‘hundreds’. I get the feeling what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing.

It's a shame but 301 is definitely the best option. Wilf wouldn't mind

That's good of you. :) I'm just going through the various options, I see Ost2rad do actually do a forged piston in 76mm which might be the spiritual successor to the Mahle piston but at 212 Euros that's some commitment! As you say 301 parts seem the best compromise assuming the barrel will take an oversize large enough to clean up the corrosion. Fingers crossed!

Good work again 👌🏻 4-strokes are my real experience but isn’t there a cylinder lining in there? Can you not have it re-lined? To be honest the piston looks mostly just carbon deposited. Cheers for the vid!

Thank you, that's really appreciated! I've a lot to learn both about the content creation and working on the bikes so all feedback genuinely is welcome. You're quite right, it is a conventional lined aluminium barrel though it's probably not quite so obvious because these start out as a 250 which is then overbored to 300 so even at standard size, the liner is relatively thin. I think there's a number of ways to tackle it, though replacing the liner would be more complex (i assume) on a 2 stroke as you'd have to machine in the various ports. Anyway phone calls to make and internet to be be searched and I'll report back in a week or so. :)
